OT: Michigan Soph. Brienne Minor given Wildcard Entry to US Open

Submitted by mjw on

If you are looking for an American to root for in the upcoming tennis US Open, 19 year old Michigan sophomore and 2017 NCAA Singles Champion Brienne Minor was given a wildcard entry into the tournament. (announcment here - yes, they spelled her name wrong).  I think if she makes it out of the first round that will be a great achievement for her.  Go Brienne!

This is a situation where it IS a great thing just to get to participate. Quite possibly the experience of a lifetime for her regardless of what the result is. I'll be interested in what draw she gets--the better the player, the lower her chance of an upset, but the cooler the story when she tells her grandkids that she played in the US Open.

As the NCAA singles champ, is it fair to assume she's good enough to get into the Open again, at some point in her career?  Certainly not a given, but a good chance?  I don't follow tennis much, so I don't know if this would be a good assumption.  But it does sound realistic...
