OT: Michigan Motorcycle Helmet

Submitted by markusr2007 on

As a frequent rider in So Cal I'm fortunate to be able to ride my Kawi all year around. Autumn is now upon us and I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these badass full customized helmets (Shoei). Would remove the incorrect block M logo of course.   Price is high though: $820.

What do you guys think?

The wings are incorrectly shaped for 820.00. Im wondering if you could take an existing helmet to a custom painter and get it done less expensively yet more correct?

Great idea though

HJC makes helmets that test just as well as the high priced models. I got a CL-17 that is DOT and SNELL approved for about $150. You can spend as little as 30 to 40 bucks. Like my dad always says though, if you have a 50 dollar head, buy a 50 dollar helmet.

the standards are far from good measures of protection, especially snell. The european standards actually do a better job of replicating real world crashes, but either way, the safety of the helmet depends heavily on the design philosophy of the company making it.

Personally I wouldn't get any helmet below top of the line. If I'm spending 10k on a bike, im going to spend the 2-3k on gear to go with it.

I think if you look across various standards and testing organizations you will find "cheap" helmets that test just as well as the high end models. I don't know how well those tests are designed, but results are results. I think it's a bad assumption that more expensive equals safer. Also, I've been street riding over 20 years and probably haven't spent 3 grand total on riding gear in that time. My gear might not look great but it's quality stuff.

You can get a helmet at almost any price point, and it is easy to find a cheap one that passes the standard tests. 500+ is the going rate for the top of the line helmets, shoei and arai. Yes, a 200 HJC passes the same DOT test. But the fit and finish, the helmet noise, features etc may not stack up. You really have to try them on for yourself and decide if it's worth it to you.

For the OP... That's a hell of a lot of money. Agree with whoever said make sure it matches your gear.

Why wouldn't you just have one custom painted if you're going to change it anyways? The metallic paint would be hard to match when covering the split M.

Also, no offense, but are some strangers on a blog really going to influence how you spend your hard earned cash?

That seems pretty steep. Shoei makes good helmets but not that good. I'd love to have a winged helmet for my bike but Ohio drivers would run me off the road and I'm cheap. I'd go with this and get some goggles.

I bought a motorcycle helmet a few years ago (I think on Ebay) for something like 70 bucks.  Then I purchased a decal kit (like this one: http://www.sportdecals.com/Classic-Wing-Decal-Set-DCSH404_DCSH404_00562…) from one of those suppliers to high school and youth football teams.  They're not easy to apply, and up close they don't look like they've been painted on.  But from a distance they look fine, and they're cheap.  Buy more than one set--you'll mess up the first one.

Also, you might not get exactly the "maize" you prefer.

Although pricey it is the going rate for a custom helmet/paint job.  You might get something a little cheaper but this isn't out of the ballpark.   As far as trying to get the "right shaped wings", it might be tough depending on the shape of the helmet.  Whether you want the officially unoffilcial split "M" is up to you.   Some on this board have said they like it (I do) so it's a matter of preference.  Expect to spend $500 to a $1,000 for a custom helmet.......shop around and remember that more often than not, you get what you pay for..............   Good Luck

I commissioned an artist to paint our famous helmet design on one of my skydiving helmets in anticipation of purchasing a Michigan-themed jumpsuit to accompany. The work was botched so terribly in terms of proportion that I abandoned the project and kept my purple/black/white checkered combo. Thinkin' about acquiring a Harley now, I'm that old, so mehbe I'll get a winged helmet eventually.

Get an 800 dollar arai or shoei then pay a painter to do it. Those wings aint gonna save you when an uninsured meth addict from needles tries to merge into you

Is wearing helmet is necessary for the protection? Here are the reasons why a rider should purchase motorbike helmets for sale and from where one can get it.

The risk of getting injured is more for a motorbike rider because it is open and it is not necessary that the rider sustain life-threatening injuries due to hi/her negligence or due to the distracted driving of any other person who collides with the motorbike. The rider can avoid the injuries by purchasing a helmet that is great for the protection of the head and there are many companies that offer high quality bike accessories and motorbike helmets for sale from which one is jsaccessories that offers helmets of different types.

A motorcycle helmet is a type of helmet (protective headgear) used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is motorcycle safety - to protect the rider's head during impact, thus preventing or reducing head injury and saving the rider's life. Some helmets provide additional conveniences, such as ventilation, face shields, ear protection, intercom etc.
