I loathe the Yankees because of the Steinbrenners. Even though I despise their team, I think many of the recent generation  (particularly Rivera, Jeter and even Torre) were great at their jobs and were genuinely good guys. They just worked for a sports figure I disliked more than any other not related to the OSU.

We took Intro to Psychology together.  He and I teamed up for our research project.  We hypothesized that girls would eat less in the presence of guys.  We went into the dorm cafeterias and watched people eat together, coded it up and everything. Null results.

A couple of years ago my Dad saw him in a restaurant in NYC.  My dad went up to him and told him this story.  He was extremely nice and friendly, but sadly did not remember our ground-breaking reseach at UM.

I remember asking Jeter what classes he was taking next semester, and he said he was playing baseball instead.

BTW, I'm now a research psychologist.

Jeter was committed to the University of Michigan before deciding to take $800,000 from the NY Yankees in the 1992 MLB draft.

And it would be the decision I'm sure he would regret every day for the rest of his life.

Great, so now they can trumpet around one of their other players on his "farewell tour." The Yankees, man.... so typical.

When you walk away, you walk away AFTER your final season. Unless you're an attention whore, then you make a big deal out of it before you actually retire. And then people like me bitch about it.

Theoretically: the movie MoneyBall could've been about Derek Jeter rather than Billy Beane if his playing career hadn't of worked out. Jeter comes off as an intelligent type guy that will get into front office management probably in 2016.

....and of course the NYC media is already all over this.

(LINK) to a nice article on the subject. In here is a quote that I found interesting anyway. Derek Jeter in his own words from his Facebook post:

“Last year was a tough one for me,” Jeter wrote as part of the post. “As I suffered through a bunch of injuries, I realized that some of the things that always came easily to me and were always fun had started to become a struggle. The one thing I always said to myself was that when baseball started to feel more like a job, it would be time to move forward."

funny---maybe it's because of reading it while seeing your avatar?

Anyway, is the term "Michigan Man" unique, as opposed to other Universities whose name begins with the letter "M"?  Is the term "Mississippi Man" used at Ole Miss?  Or M_______ Man at Montana,  Missouri or Minnesota.

Is a grad of Marlboro College forever labeled a "Marlboro Man"?

And then, there's always the "Morehead Man" term to have to explain away...

Don Mattingly will always be my favorite player and when he retired I was sad because he was a hero to me. I like Jeter a lot but it's different. I was still in college when he came up and he's only 3 weeks older than me. His hair is gone and I'm just starting to get a few greys and now he's going to retire. It's like "F*ck, how did we get this old already." His retirement is a part of my youth coming to an end. I guess we'll all have those parallel athletes who we connect to in that way in whatever town you're from.

Here's something I guarantee Jeter's thinking but you'll never hear him say - he now knows he will never have to play another game as a teammate of A-Rod.  Don't think for a second that's lost on him.

...athletes I have ever met. Met him at the airport during one of the breaks from Michigan. The only thing I am still pissed about is that he heavily recruited Henson to play baseball for Yanks...and we know the rest.

I played little league and high school ball with Derek. His Dad and my Dad were our youth baseball coaches. I have been riding this fame bandwagon since his first day in the majors and now it is about over! And it also officially confirms that I am getting OLD! Ugh!

Davis, I negged you solely because Derek Jeter never was, is not now, and never will be a Michigan Man BECAUSE HE NEVER SPENT ONE FUCKING SECOND IN A MICHIGAN UNIFORM OR A MICHIGAN CLASSROOM.

Jesus, have standards really fallen that low now?
