OT: Michigan Bike Helmet

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on

Hey fellow people of MGoBlog, I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard about a Michigan Bike Helmet. Got a new bike today, blah blah, but my helmet is 8 years old. Something like this:

but navy blue it has the maize wings painted. Or even a place/website that does custom paintjobs.

Thanks,

Gil

I had my closest call yet today. A car let someone through into a parking lot and that someone decided to floor it without checking the bike lane. The passenger was screaming and but for having just gotten a tune up I don't think I could have stopped in time. Biking in Chicago is great but sooo dangerous. I always notice when someone doesn't have a helmet, or worse, has no helmet but is wearing headphones.

Got hit 3 years ago... going through an intersection on the bike path, some girl was turning right, but looking at her phone. Once she saw an opening, she turned right without ever looking back to the right.  I saw it coming the whole way and was able to mostly swerve and had slowed down considerably in defense. I was able to bail on my bike and jump off.  Luckily a few scratches on the bike and no injuries.

Luckily the closest I've ever come to a serious accident was getting doored. Luckily I sensed that something was about to go down and swerved a bit. The door still got me on the hand though and split it open pretty good. And thats why cyclists don't use bike lanes all the time downtown.

I've had a number of minor close calls. One very serious close call and one collision.

For the collision, I was on a mostly empty 6 lane road with very few cars going my way.  A work van coming from the other direction decided to make a left turn in front of me and I didn't have enough time to avoid him. Ended up broadsiding him, but no harm to me or my bike. His explaination was that he saw me but thought he could make it. that may have been a reasonable excuse in heavy traffic but there was no one on the road. Just wait the ten seconds for me to go by...

For the serious near miss, I was on a steep straight decent going close to 40MPH. When a cement truck made a left turn from an interecting road. I skidded to a stop; just barely missing the rear of the truck. I suspect the driver didn't see me/expect me to be moving that fast. I'll take a little of the blame for this one. Never did bomb down that hill so hard again.

No bike lanes on either of these roads as it was the south. But also not a lot of traffic and dumb southern drivers.

I know, I did it for years...safest time to ride was on the lakeside path at 5:00 AM during the summers, but even then you were taking your life into your hands. Unless they have really added a lot of bike lanes, I don't see where you can ride in the city?

Speaking of which, was biking with a group on suburban AZ roads at 6:00 AM last summer, when we were buzzed by a red Chevy Suburban with AZ plates FAN4OSU. Word of advice- never perform an act of road rage with an easily remembered personalized license plate....

I bike all over DC and don't have a helmet but I've been looking for a Michigan one for a while myself.

But,  think we're sitting on a goldmine here.  Are there ANY collegiately-licensed bike helmets out there?    I see people ride by with UVA, VT, Texas, Tennessee, Maryland and even some Michigan biking jerseys all the time - but why no helmets?  Think of the market!

Let's get some Ross MgoBusiness people on here to get a start-up going.  I'd invest.
