OT: Michigan Art

Submitted by WestQuad on

Friday of Memorial Day is probably a slow day, so it is a good time for an art show.

My six year old daughter drew this for me yesterday.  She does a lot of Michigan art for me because she knows I love Michigan.   Let's see your kids' or your own Michigan Art.

To me the "Iambetterthanyourkids" guy came off more as an @sshat than funny.  It is one thing to be cruel while being funny - it might not be your cup of tea, but it has a long tradition in comedy.  And, to think of it, in football (for example Steve Spurrier).

Comming off a cruel while not being funny also has a long tradition.  Think Woody Hayes, Brian Kelly, Mike Leach . . .   I'm willing to bet we could come up with a looooonnggg list here . . .

I don't want to go too far down the rabbit hole on a discussion of whether something's funny, since humor is subjective.  It's like arguing about ice cream flavors.

But "coming off cruel" assumes that you really believe that the grades and commentary are being given to the kids.  It seems unlikely, at least to me, that the grading and commentary were shared with the kids - that would be a total dick move, and, of course, most of the pictures are fine kid pictures.  This is just satire (that's not to your taste) - not actual jabs at actual kids.  (Contrast that with Woody Hayes, who literally took actual jabs at actual kids!  I'm not sure, though, why you're lumping Mike Leach in with Hayes and Kelly - unless ... you're Craig James.)

Upon taking a second look at the website, my biggest gripe is that the proprietor has been running the same gag for over a decade.  So for me, it's a matter of being stale (although I still think the original comments were very funny).

I see your point on the recent ones.

What led me to the site was recalling a .pdf that was making the rounds about 12 years ago called "I Am Better Than Your Kids".  It had about 8 drawings with pretty funny commentary.  This site appears to have grown from the notoriety of that (IMO) very funny .pdf.

Keeping it fresh/funny for 12 years with the same basic gag?  Really tough.  But if you look at the earliest entries, I think they were very funny.

In any event, I thought the IABTYK website was right in line with the first comment to this post.

Custom covers I made for all my college football video games that didn't already feature a Michigan athlete on them. These are just the ones that I have uploaded.

I still have to make a few more for some of the old NCAA Gamebreaker games.

No, but this is a special occasion.

Some of those covers aren't very good like 2005 as I was just learning photoshop/fireworks when I made it.

I made the Gamebreaker 2004 cover during lunch way back in my sophomore year of HS.

Looking to redo that one with a better looking logo and probably a higher res image once I finish up all the Gamebreaker games.

I found physical copies of the old Genesis games at a store near me so I'll get a chance to print out and apply each cover to each game. Before I just played those old games using ROMs.

Daughter did this when she was 7. Pretty sure she traced the person from one of those fashion designer drawing things, but totally surprised me with the Michigan theme.

In non-Michigan, non-kid art news, Picasso's Les Femme d’Algers (Version “O”) sold a couple weeks back (apparently to the former Prime Minister of Qatar) for a new auction record of $179.4mm.

A Rothko also sold later that week for $82mm, which is high for one of his pieces, but not a record.

Pretty random, but the Picasso is an all time high and I love Rothko's work, plus I don't have kids to draw for me.

I have the below painting of the "Pubs of Ann Arbor".  It's an original oil painting.  It's pretty cool.  With that said, I'm actually going to have to sell it, because I don't have anywhere I can hang it in my new place and I need some cash.  None the less, wanted to share with the MGoBloggers before it goes.

Man, looking at all of those, I really miss your work, dude. I know what you mean about kids changing things, though. I'm either exhausted, being climbed on, or both. None are conducive to good artwork. Here's hoping you get to do some Harbaugh-inspired MS Paint brilliance.
