Dave Wannstedt calls the AD, but he left for a week-long sailing trip instead. He returns to narrow his search to Tony Dungy and Sean Payton, who both refused to take his calls. He then tried to offer the job to Doug Marrone of Syracuse, who decides to stay at his alma mater after verbally agreed to the position. After two more weeks of criticism and rumors, during which Kirk Ferentz received a $1M per year raise from Iowa, Pitt ends up with their fourth coach in 5 years.
