OT: MGoBlog Tax? Discuss
Philadelphia apparently has a Business Privilege Tax for residents who engage in any sort of “activity for profit,” including blogging for ads. Would this roll in Michigan?

It probably depends who the elected officials are. Politics aside, states are hurting right now for cash and they can't print money like the feds, they'll look for money wherever they can find it.

Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Detroit also have city taxes. This is not some new, insidious form of taxation.

I was looking for a discussion about whether blogs are fair game for taxation. And whether taxing bloggers would make the Bleacher Report types a bit more responsible like MGoBlog types. No Tea Party grumbling intended, for you politically hyper-sensitive types.

Under most definitions, for-profit blogging activity would be taxable within a city like Grand Rapids, assuming it was an LLC or a corporation registered in the state of Michigan at an address within the city.

states and municipalities have to post notice before they can levy a new tax, and it usually must pass a supermajority vote at the state level. my point is you would hear people complaining about it before it passed. Kind of like the ice cream truck rolling down my street.

The State of Michigan is also likely to impose the Michigan Business Tax on Brian if he is over the $350k gross receipts threshold.
