OT - Memphis basketball sanactions

Looks like Memphis may have to vacate their 2007-2008 season because of recruiting violations. This is the second time for Coach Cal. Not that this should have surprised anyone - looking at how some of his teams are constructed, you kind of expected that the NCAA would ultimately come down hard on his teams. Kentucky fans and administration - you are on notice.

Kentucky being good is a great thing for college basketball so they won't get the hammer. Cal would have to do a lot to warrant any sort of sanction from the NCAA.

I don't know about that. I feel like Kentucky is actually the big-time sports school that the NCAA likes to make an example of. Obviously the death penalty was back in the 50s during a different era, but I think they have been hit with sanctions during the 80s and 90s. I understand that it was 20 years ago, but the NCAA considered hitting UK with the death penalty in 1989 (and Alabama football in 2002!) but didn't because the fallout from the SMU scandal was so immense--it was a major contributing factor in the dissolution of a conference (SWC)! I don't know how much things have changed in the past 15 years, but I feel like if the NCAA can hit Michigan with major sanctions and badly hurt its program (although a lot was self-imposed), then it would have no problem hitting Kentucky.

They might not punish Calipari and Kentucky while he is there, but they certainly will bring sanctions if/when he leaves. Same with USC - once they fall off the map a bit and Carroll leaves, I think you will see a harder-line stance taken with some of the recruiting/payment issues that have been highlighted.

Its a shame that some penalties have not been applied to him personally. At least a huge fine or something.

exactly. It is an old argument, but it is a travesty that a coach can cheat, leave before the fallout, get a nice raise and a better job, and leave the previous school and the kids he recruited to pay the penalty.

I would never want this guy to coach a team I'm a fan of. It's pretty low he has basically used all the other schools he has been at to get better jobs and leave the schools getting sanctioned when he leaves.

if the NCAA would still be having them vacate their 2007-08 season if they would have actually hit their free throws down the stretch against Kansas in the title game. I couldn't imagine them actually stripping a National Championship from someone -- it seems like it would take too much credibility away from the sport (not that it should have much at this point anyway).
