OT: Meeting Minutes from Big East after 2003 ACC raid
Very interesting look into the Big East meetings that took place after the first ACC raid of the Big East in 2003.
July 2003: http://mysite.verizon.net/fethrs/Minutes%20July%202003.pdf
October 2003: http://mysite.verizon.net/fethrs/Minutes%20October%202003.pdf
They discuss conference models for between 8 and 16 teams, and which teams to add. After the July meeting, Mike Tranghese approached ND, SU Chancellor Ken Shaw approached Penn State about joining the Big East.
These meetings took place after Miami and VT left, note that Boston College had not left the BE yet.
It was the SU Chancellor that proposed the $5M exit fee and 27-month notice to leave that SU and Pitt are trying to get out of.
The best line though is "We as a group genuinely believe that the break-up of the Big East Conference is inevitable -- and probably the best overall scenario for all parties concerned" and then goes on to discuss the football and basketball-only schools breaking up.
Interesting reads.

Talk about inflated self worth. It takes some serious balls to ask Penn State to join up and leave the Big Ten.

I dono, maybe they would pull a notre dame and say they'd join a crap conference like the ACC since they know they're scared to compete in the B1G

PSU is just a sleeping giant waiting for JoePa to move on. With the right hire, they'll be consistently great again.

either that or relegated to mediocrity. what real advantages does psu have to ensure future success? i know penn state is a national brand, but so much of that brand is tied to joepa, it may not have the same draw once he's gone.

A strong tradition combined with a very strong home recruiting state—Pennsylvania consistently puts out talent. Plus, they're right next to another recruiting hotbed in Ohio and also are the closest B1G school to the East Coast. Penn State has a lot going for them recruiting-wise if they can get the right coach in place.

Forbes named them the third most valuable NCAA football team. They have the second largest stadium in college football. Massive, rabid fan base, etc etc
PSU isn't going anywhere.

All solid points, but most importantly....they won't have to play MICHIGAN every year being in the "Leaders Division".

They own NJ too which produces talent every year.

You haven't been to Happy Valley, have you?

Given the money that the B1G generates, PSU would would be absolutely insane to leave, particularly for the Big East. There are hundreds of millions of reasons why the Big Ten is the most stable and secure athletic conference, and those reasons are all the same: dead presidents.

The last lines of the second document reference a "Michigan Issue (Big Ten)". Anyone know what they meant?
September 26th, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
It's about the use of Big East officials for Michigan-Notre Dame games.

I thought for sure that it was going to be another one of those home-made subtitle scripts to the bunker scene from "Downfall."
Anyway, what's so bad about Penn State being shunted off to the ACC? The best thing for them, really.

PSU is here to stay...just deal with it. The contribute a powerful brand, a great recruiting hotbed, east coast TV sets, Tradition, better academics, and rabid fan base. Just deal with it. The Big Ten is better with them

Aren't PSU fans the ones saying how much they want to leave? I'm happy with them in the Big 10, just think its funny how that fanbase got used to "dominance" based on beating up Syracuse, BC, Rutgers, and Maryland every year.

The idea of a CUSA/Big East merger may not be a bad idea, at least for football. The basketball-only schools are really dragging the football side down, and if the Big East loses its AQ bid anyway, a football-only alliance may be the best answer.

How did these documents make it to the internet?

It was evidence in Boston College's lawsuit against the Big East when they ultimately left for the ACC.

On page 6 of the first document, the word "consensus" is misspelled (as "concensus") twice in the same paragraph.

I was REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping for a link to another meeting of the Octonion...

It never, ever fails. You start with "mascot," and it is going to end badly.

The latest Octonion. The best one yet.

Word on the street is that there's another one in the works for Otto to bid farewell to the Big East.
Rainbows and sprinkles!

What a mess. Basketball schools this, Football schools that. Is it any wonder that incoherent junkyard fell apart?
