OT McEnroe v. Courier on now. Good & funny!

Submitted by Honk if Ufer M… on

Man it's awesome seeing how he still can play in his mid 50's! This against a bigger, stronger and ten years younger Courier too. Leading 4-2 in the first set.  A lot of joking around that you can hear too!

Wait, the post wasn't great because you seriously think there's confusion about who they are and what the sport is? hahaha.

So the assumption is that a person who didn't know those two names or  know what sport it was about by the paring of the two names, and it being one name v. another, which narrows it down to either tennis or boxing, would suddenly be interested in the post if I identified the sport, even though they didn't know who the players were?

Whatever, I thought getting the chance to see the entertaining and nostalgic match, for anyone who would be interested and didn't know it was on, would be enough to make it a good post. I didn't do anything misleading that would make someone click on the topic if they didn't know the names.

Studies show that people who use the expression "butthurt" have IQ's 10 points below average.

It wasn't a shitty post and don't get your panties in such a bunch because a random person on the internet didn't understand the criticism about his post and sought clarification.

Of course it's not unbelievable that some people don't know the names, but like I said, who cares? If you don't know the names I wouldn't expect you to be interested or want to click on it. I did know that all of the people who were familiar with one of the greatest and most famous and infamous tennis players and athletes in history, paired with another of the greatest and most famous tennis players, wouldn't need full names or the name of the sport in the headline in order know who I was talking about.

I loved him too because of his amazing game and because I totally identified with him and his outrage at being screwed & wanting justice, haha. Part of his greatness was his vision and he was a right a lot when he argued calls. He wanted to win so badly and hated losing so much, he was real and honest and expressed himself, just like I was, and he got shit from everyone for it. I took the criticism personally.

Can't tell if people are trolling in this thread or if American Men's Tennis has seriously fallen that far since the glory days of the late 90s and prior.

It's fallen huge - name me 3 great American mens tennis players.

Ok...now try 1.

We've got nothing in the top tier anymore - and we really haven't for well over a decade.  It's been Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray for the better part of 10-12 years.

John Isner is currently the "best" American men's tennis player.  I doubt more than 1% of the population would know who he is.  Sam Querrey and Jack Sock are the next 2 highest rated.

Agassi/Sampras was a long time ago now.  Probably the game has the most elite players at the same time the past few years (maybe only Becker McEnroe Lendl era compares) but they are all Europeans.  There is 1 North American in the top 15 but he was born in Montenegro (and is Canadian).

Still great memories of Connors last huge run at the U.S. open watching in the dorms in September (early 90s).  And the Nadal-Federer  Wimbeldon final from ...what is it now - 8 years ago or so will go down as the best ever IMO.  But modern day American's men tennis is nearly dead.

Well, anyway, I referred to a first set score, but these matches turn out to be one set affairs. He beat Courier and now is about to play Roddick in the final of whatever this Powershares thing is.

Still married to Patty Smyth. Remember when he had a talk show on MSNBC? Terrible but his premier featured Patty and Sting with John playing a few guitar licks. Then it was all downhill from there. Fun bizarre trivia: Patty Smyth Is Happy to Have Turned Down Van Halen Job

I grew up and learned tennis in the boom of the late 60's and early 70's. After 35 years off, I play competitively again, and am on my way from Phoenix to Atlanta to play in a tournament. Although he downplays it now, Mac IMO was one of the 5-7 best ever, and one the the smartest and fiercest competitors the game ever knew. His TV show on CNBC was so bad it was hilarious. Lasted about 90 days. BTW---most everyone on tour disliked him immensely because he is supposedly an a-hole. I hear that is still true. I too feel he is a great announcer though many do not agree.

(Okay, now I am ready for some kid in his mom's basement, or Space Coyote, aka Al Borges, to inform me I do not know what I am talking about!)
