OT: Massillon HS Football documentary

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

If you have some time to kill and like movies about football, this is a pretty good one.

It's a documentary from 2001 on Massillon-Washington HS in Ohio, documenting their 1999 season. Shawn Crable was a Freshman on their team at the time of the filming.

It really shows how big HS football is in Ohio. I uploaded it because I noticed how difficult it was to find online to watch. It's one of my favorite movies because it's just crazy how into their high school football team these people are. I've seen nothing like it here in MI.

It's probably the closest anyone in the Midwest will get to being like Allen or Katy in Texas that have built multi-million dollar stadiums for HS teams.

Incoming Freshman kicker Andrew David is coming to Michigan from Massillon.

In fact, the amazing NFL-style indoor practice facility that Massillon has is named after Andrew David's grandfather.

Massillon plays in a 15,000-seat stadium.

I wouldn't call it that. The way it seems to me is that Ohio State football is popular in pretty much all of Ohio, but less popular in the Cleveland area and Cincinnati areas where high school football is more of an emphasis. Living in the SE Michigan/NW Ohio farm country area high school football is popular here but nowhere near as popular as college.

Ironically, HS football is not nearly big in central Columbus than the Cinci and Cleveland area. I could never understand why HS football never became real popular in Columbus especially with osu being there.

This is an interesting thread for me, personally. I am from Massillon, but didnt go to Washington, the HS featured in this film. There are three high schools in the town, all tremendous D1 programs. The other two are Perry and Jackson, the latter of which I attended. Crable and I are the same age and knew each other through mutual friends. I know quite a few of these guys in the movie, one of which (the dude puking in the basement) was my boss during one of my early HS summer jobs working at a local lawn care company. Needless to say, the culture of football in Massillon, particularly for Washington HS is INSANE. Absolutely crazy. However, the town has really saddled itself to football while the rest of the culture and the city has fallen apart around them.

Happy to answer any questions other posters may have, but it's a culture you have to live in to actually believe.

So I imagine you went to DeSalles because I remember that game. And do you know why I remember it so vividly? It's because I was the one who botched that snap on the field goal. I can remember everything about that play because it was so surreal. I remember then you guys going 11/12-1 that year and that weird fluke being the only loss of the year. My coach reemed me after and I had to run when we got back to the locker rooms.

Seriously, this is un-fucking-believable

Oh snap, I remember the whole thing as I watched from the sideline, I was offense only. Always wondered if from a Mass. Jackson perspective if you guys thought the play was legal? I also remember your kicker nailing pre game FG then missing a few in the game. You had to run after the game?? That's grade school shit.

All was forgotten as 9/11 happened the following, and our next game against Cincy Moeller was cancelled, stupid terrorist.

13 - 1, won D2 Championship game at Tiger Stadium.
