OT: Maryland loses top two commits in one day to OSU

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Rough day for Durkin and Maryland.

Dwayne Haskins, their 5 4 star QB commit flipped today. They also lost 4 star LB Keandre Jones. Both of them are from MD, as well.

Maryland currently has 10 commits, only one of them being a defensive player.

Haskins is a monster loss for them as he'd likely start there from day 1 over the three man interception machine they had this past season.

If it makes you feel any better, terrapins aren't an official taxonomic unit, according to Wikipedia.  Which sort of means that people decided to start calling a bunch of turtles "terrapins" without making sure they were, you know, related in any way.  I feel like there's an analogy here to Maryland, but can't be bothered to think about it any longer.

100% Agree. I know people say "there's only so many HC jobs" but IMO Maryland is a suicide job. Brutal division, limited tradition, small fanbase, your recruiting based is under attack from all angles - North (B1G) and South (SEC) and local (ACC).

I guess there's probably limited expetations but Maryland is a job where success probably caps out at 8-4 (if you schedule a cake non-conference) and a 3rd place finish in the division.

Also, Durkin while likely a solid coach doesn't strike me as a Art Briles or Tom Herman type visionary that can walk into places that have been losing for decades and make it a destination. Will see. My money would be on he's fired within 4 years.

The UA money obviously helps but I don't think they will go to the level of Nike/Phil Knight and Oregon, and this isn't MLB baseball where you can just pay players more than other teams to come play for you if you have money (SEC and Ole Miss jokes aside).

Michigan and Texas have more money than almost any other Power 5 program and the last 5-8 years has been quite a struggle at both schools.

I live a few miles from Maryland.  The biggest problem with Maryland is that there are not limited expectations.  Their expectations are way out of line with reality.

They fired Friedgen after he did the following for them:

Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs Coaches# AP°
Maryland Terrapins (Atlantic Coast Conference) (2001–Present)
2001 Maryland 10–2 7–1 1st L Orange 10 11
2002 Maryland 11–3 6–2 T–2nd W Peach 13 13
2003 Maryland 10–3 6–2 2nd W Gator 20 17
2004 Maryland 5–6 3–5 T–8th
2005 Maryland 5–6 3–5 T–4th (Atlantic)
2006 Maryland 9–4 5–3 T–2nd (Atlantic) W Champs Sports
2007 Maryland 6–7 3–5 T–5th (Atlantic) L Emerald
2008 Maryland 8–5 4–4 T–3rd (Atlantic) W Humanitarian
2009 Maryland 2–10 1–7 6th (Atlantic)
2010 Maryland 9–4 5–3 T–2nd (Atlantic) W Military 24 23
Maryland: 75–50 43–37
Total: 75–50

He was ACC coach of the year when they fired him.

They are insane.

He was a victim of his own early success.  When he could not sustain that level (although he still did pretty well) they forgot that they had little success before he came along.  They felt they were destined for better things than old Rlaph could deliver and they booted him.

They have not been anywhere close since then.

go read a few threads over at Testudo Times. According to the fanbase over there, they've never lost a game because the other team was just better. It's always coaching or the refs. If you read their game thread for our game, they had it in the bag if it wasn't for bad coaching. I've grown to somewhat hate Maryland already because their fans have an attitude of a blue blood program without any of the results.

The ACC was FSU and a bunch of tomato cans before they raided the Big East to add Miami (FL), VT, & BC. Maryland dropped off at the exact time the ACC expanded. Those Big East teams have fallen on some hard times now, but when they were added, they were 3 of the 5 best teams in the ACC in the 5 years following expansion.

"When he could not sustain that level (although he still did pretty well) they forgot that they had little success before he came along."

This is exactly what I think when I hear people bitch about Beilein.  It's like they forgot the Ellerbe and Amaker eras and just how much of a shitpile Beilein walked into.

happened in 09?  They went from 8 to 2 to 9 wins in a 3 year span.

EDIT-Just looked at the WIkipedia article for that season, says they returned only 9 starters that year, lowest in football other than the service acadamies.  The article is poorly edited so I'm not sure how accurate it is though.

would have been better off taking a good non-Power 5 job, knocking it out of the park there, thus setting himself up for a shot at a good Power 5 job.  Sort of the Tom Herman, Justin Fuente approach.  Just way too much headwind at Maryland.  They ain't in the ACC no more.

He is young enough to spend a couple of years proving he can be a head coach via a non-power 5 school, setting himself up for a transtion to a school with a better chance to succeed.

By the way, Harbaugh seemed pretty reserved about Durkin's move, saying very little about Durkin in a positive way.  Did I miss that or was it simply Harbaugh's competitive instincts kicking in?
