OT: Marrow in Toledo

Submitted by NHGoBlue on

Vince is in Toledo tonight, seemed like a pretty cool guy. Asked him about the Michigan offer and he said you have a great coach there, don't worry. I assume he is recruiting someone here.

I don't know if I'd assume that he's in Toledo for recruiting. Toledo has got some pretty great nightlife that draws a crowd.

That nickname is not recent and had been around before meth was around or was a problem. Toledo was a large glass manufacturer back in the day..... Libby, Owens Corning Illinois (fiberglass), etc.

I will admit...for as small and crappy of a town that Toledo is....they have a world class art museum, zoo, and metro park system. Nothing to scoff at for sure and gives many major cities a run for their money in those categories.

Are you talking about the same Toledo that he's talking about?

As someone who was born and raised in THAT Toledo...and spent more years there while alive than not, the only "night life" are a few seedy bars by UT that change their names every few years, a couple of bowling alleys, and some pretty dangerous inner city "clubs" that tend to get closed by the city because of some shady things going down.

Yeah, little Detroit but far more boring.

Oh yeah, well since we're  randomly dropping coach names, I saw Urban Meyer at the Phoenix Open pro-am today. He hit a mediocre short iron on the famous par 3 16th.  I  could not evaluate his coolness.

Curious as to why it was awesome to meet a position coach from Kentucky. He coached high school football at Springfield, in Holland, which could explain why he was in town. I know he has been linked to solid recruiting, but I never understood the infatuation with him. From what I've heard from local high school coaches that knew him, he was kind of a scum bag.

Yep - Balas also insinuated that there was some stench to the guy which made him (Balas) uncomfortable in his potentially joining the staff.

Plus, Marrow initiated contact with Michigan and parlayed that into a raise with his current employer. He recruits but doesn't appear to do much coaching. UK's TEs were less productive than Michigan's.

Who knows, but if you're Tony himself, any time that your daughter can write a letter to Burt Reynolds and he shows up and signs a hot dog bun, you're probably doing something quite right. I do enjoy eating there whenever I take in a game at Fifth Third in the summer, although my wife is partial to the Spaghetti Warehouse up the street a bit.

This is OT from the topic, but I have to post this. Great read... This is a 2015 QB recruit.. 6'3" 200lbs, threw for almost 5,000 yards, 49 tads and 6 ints this year, won a state title, carries a 4.0 gpa. Only problem, ZERO scholarship offers!!

I looked at Harbaugh's approach to Marrow as almost a "recruiting" scenario into the Michigan coaching staff. I was sad to see him not join the crew we have built. Glad to get a good endorsement from him. Go Blue!

I keep waiting for someone to defend Toledo. If you know the place, it really has some terrific places to eat and drink. Yes, it's riddled with gangs, and has little charm if you don't know where to look. I've given tips to visitors over the years and they've had a good time in my stomping grounds

You mind sharing where these gems are located? I lived there for nearly 30 years and haven't yet regretted my move. The only reason I go back is because my immediate family is there and only are currently staying in the area until some financial situations work themselves out (properties) which will be in about 5 years or so.

I was bored as a teen and young adult there.... being older I can appreciate more but even still, I find myself wanting to leave ASAP after only a couple of days. Atmopshere and vibe is just so depressing...not to mention it's cloudy on average for 180 some days out of the year.  We've been far pressed to find a good place to eat that isn't serving over priced frozen GFS products in small tiny portions.

The only thing I enjoy about "going home" is driving up to Ann Arbor. I love that.

My wife and I have great memories of Tony Packo's and El Camino (not to mention our trips to the Toledo Zoo) from when I lived there. Sounds like we'll just agree to disagree on the town, but since you asked for a couple of the gems there..(although I can't disagree with you on the cloudiness!)

I've been to all of those places. Visiting is one thing but living there is something else. A friend's family was going to the Detroit Autoshow for the first time and they asked about Toledo since they would be driving through. I told them the must sees are the zoo, the art museum and eating at Tony Packos. They loved it. As for someone who is living there..... those spots get old, real fast. El Caminos? Ehhh. If someone is in the mood for Mexican, I  would suggest Ventura's next time. Better food and far better atmosphere ...especially with the storied history of the place.

Toledo has some great pizza places. Gino's...  hmmmm. I am still trying to find a similar place outside of Toledo. No luck so far.

All of the Mancy's restaurants, Bluewater, Italian, the Steakhouse. And Shorty's is as good of a joint as you'll find anywhere, and I travel a ton. Nick and Jimmy's has a very creative unique bar menu, especially for breakfast. If you're the type, like me who avoids chains like BW3, and wouldn't be seen dead in Applebee's, there are plenty of private bars that are a good place to watch a game.
