Horrible news in baseball. Mariano Rivera, best relief pitcher in MLB history tears ACL and his fabulous career may be over. Rivera was injured shagging fly balls before the game. You just never know

So this is heartbreaking news for me. Even Yankees hater have to feel bad for the man (I wouldn't expect sympathy for the team). The best closer in MLB history and an even better man.

I agree, I don't like the yankee's but I never wish and injury on anyone. I just cringe when I see one happen. It is not the way you would want to end a career, but he has had a nice career and has nothing to prove to anyone. Hope he recovers and wish him well.

By all accounts.  Soft-spoken, let his pitching do the talking, never show-boated.  He really didn't deserve to have it end like this.  Should have ended with him getting a save and then having a celebration after the game with everyone cheering his name.  Sad.

Not the way you want a player like Mo to go out.  Never liked the Yankees, but I am pretty sure there is not 1 thing bad I can say about him.

i was debating whether i should post this.  i thought that since yankee fans are generally disliked, it wasn't worth fanning the flames.  so thanks for posting.

as a yankee fan, i can tell you that there is no more easily likeable player than mo.  he's engaging with the fans, a common presence in the community and with charitable events, and so humble for a man who has accomplished so much.  his simple fluid motion on the mound really equals his elegance off it.

I've hated the Yankees throughout the regime of the Boss and his progeny. Souldn't stand the Bronx Zoo. But the last great generation that is now retired/retiring/run off (Rivera, Jeter, Posada, Bernie Williams, Torre) was hard to root against. I could never root for them as a team, but like them individually. Rivera is the best that ever lived at what he does/did and is a damn good guy. I really hate it for him.

Definitely sad news. As others have said, I've never been a Yanks fan, but I definitely respect what Mo has done for the game, both on and off the field. Total class act all around.

I'm a mets fan, and always had respect for Mo.  That said... I had David Robertson on my fantasy team, but placed him on waivers!!!!!!!!11

I'm sure he'll be back in some capacity.  Even if he can't return to form, I think he would still make for a great situational reliever or set up man.

This just sucks. This is no way to go out. I hope he tries to come back for one more year in '13. But for now, this team has some issues that I'm concerned with. Not a good feeling here for 2012.

....and such terrible news and - if it is indeed the end - a terrible way for such a storied career to end. Say what you will about the Yankees, Mariano Rivera is, in my estimation, the best closer of the modern era of the game (608 career saves, 2.21 ERA anda SO/BB ratio that is in the 4:1 range over 17 seasons, to mention a few stats) and by all accounts, one of the most genuine people in the game today. You would want someone who has performed at the level he has for that long to go on their own terms, which just makes this especially sad - it also makes me want him to mount a comeback, even if only a brief one, so he can do just that.

Of all his stats, I think that his post-season stats are most impressive.   Since 1995, he's pitched in 96 post-season games.   His record is 8-1 with 42 saves with an ERA of 0.70 and a WHIP of 0.76.

It's one thing to compile stats when you're playing cellar dwellers during the regular season, but to have that level of performance when you're playing the best of the best?   Unreal.

As a Yankee-hater (more accurately, Yankee fan hater), I was still pretty upset by this news.

At least for Mets fans like myself growing up in the suburbs of NY in the 90s, a lot of the Yankee-hatred is really Yankee-fan-hatred, as their fans were insufferable during their pretty epic mid-90s-2000s run. Still, I always had a general respect for Jeter, Mo, Girardi, Posada and a few of those old-guard guys that went about it all with relative class.

Needless to say, I won't miss my team facing him, but Mo will nevertheless be missed by all of baseball (except the 3 poor bastards that had to face him in the 9th during any given game).
