OT: Marcus Luttrell is guest picker on GameDay
Marcus is a great guy that I served with in Hawai'i so I am happy to see him get the nod.

I respect the hell out of people that put their lives on the line like SEALS do, but his book was a political hack job. The contradictions made my head explode.

carry on

I hate to bring this up in this, but I'm curious as to what you mean it was a political hack job? I saw the movie so that's all I have to go on...I'm just really curious now.

I have no idea what "political hack job" is being referred to either, and I read the book. Oh well, NO POLITICS
November 14th, 2014 at 10:11 PM ^
Did you read the book? He got very politIcal at several points. Then he'd circle back and contradict himself in a way that I'm pretty sure he didn't realize he was doing it.
His story was amazing. I wish he would have left politics out of it.

Considering it was politics that got him into the situation, I'm sure he feels very strongly about certain issues. Had the rules of engagement been different, 11 Navy Seals and 8 members of the Army keep their lives. Shitty situation but that's why he thinks what he does.
NO POLITICS THOUGH>

It's his book right? So he can put whatever he wants in it.
November 14th, 2014 at 8:41 PM ^
Yeah, I didn't care for the politics in the book either. I thought it took away from an otherwise remarkable story.
He shoulda followed the "no politics" rule, I suppose.

The politics he speaks of in his book is more or less blaming the media for the reason why him and his team suffered through all the things they did during operation red wing. I know most people may feel like it's a politically bashing the democrat side of the spectrum but I felt like it was more a speaking against mainstream media which at the time was in 2003 I believe but it's spot on and anyone can see how poor media coverage is in today's world in 2014.
November 14th, 2014 at 9:01 PM ^
Right, it was the media and not them shooting at people in another country.
November 15th, 2014 at 7:39 AM ^
Who gives a shit that his book had politics (that you, or anyone else, didn't like). That has literally nothing to do with the topic of his first picks on ESPN.
November 15th, 2014 at 10:59 AM ^
Agree. The movie was good though. Pretty tragic story.

May I ask in what capacity you served with Luttrell? Unrelated to my question, but a young man from the very small town I live in here in Iowa is a SEAL - no idea what team or where he is :)

and retired Navy (westcoast sailor). I respect the hell out of those men. I've met quite a few and they are the absolute cream of the crop.

To clarify, I am not a native Iowan (I'm from Virginia), but I got seduced by an Iowa farm girl.

We overlapped at SDVT1. I was there from 1998-2002 and he got there in January 2000.

He's a Texas boy so he will picking all things lonestar!
November 14th, 2014 at 9:03 PM ^
I love Marcus. Great man.
November 14th, 2014 at 9:26 PM ^
No need to mention the politics at all, this man survived a botched mission and is a hero, I'll be rooting for his picks all day
November 14th, 2014 at 10:12 PM ^
To be fair he's the one that brought politics into it.
November 14th, 2014 at 10:41 PM ^
To be fair, you're the only one bringing up politics.
November 14th, 2014 at 10:43 PM ^
my jimmies when people have and express opinions. Particularly decorated veterans. Harumph. Like we should care what they think...
November 14th, 2014 at 9:54 PM ^
Marcus has taken his hits on the battlefield and the media, and also by conspiracy theorists who second guess the amount of militia they encountered out there. I say fuck em all and damn proud of those men who fought for our country. We are lucky to be one third of the men they are
November 14th, 2014 at 10:44 PM ^
I believe this is appropriate:

Have you read "Why we lost"? I am not sure how to take that General. Can he be taken seriously? Or is he just that damn honest that he says everything with no filter?
November 14th, 2014 at 11:04 PM ^
and I don't really think his veiws on the media and how the reaction to killing the herders is all that political. He was dealing with reality and how the fallout from the Abu Ghaib situation would affect them. From my pov I don't think that's political at all, it's reality.

need more people like this.
