Cleveland offers two first rounders for Titans pick, expected to take Mariota

If this is true, then Mariota's career is already over. Cleveland is a black hole from which no QB has ever escaped.

Hopefully this would give Manziel a second chance somewhere else. Hopefully he can land somewhere as a backup and learn the ropes from a good starter.

That's incredibly stupid of them. Assuming they do get a franchise QB, they're going to ruin him because they wont have enough pieces around him due to the fact that they traded away all of their draft picks.

How many times are these terrible teams going to have to do stupid shit like this (trading in all of their draft picks for one guy) before they realize it is quite simply the worst way to build a football team?

All of the data we have collected over however many years points to the NFL draft largely being a giant crapshoot. The one thing that good teams have figured out is that the way you mitigate the risk involved in the draft is to stockpile as many picks as possible. The teams who consistently fail are those who pull off these 647 picks for RGIII or 77654 picks for Herschel Walker, megadeals. You'd have thought by now people who are supposedly professionals would at the very least have a basic grasp of this. But then there's Cleveland...

I remember Colin Cowherd -- yeah, I know -- going on and on about how Manziel would be good because he's the same size as Russell Wilson.  I recall screaming at my car radio "The difference is Wilson is smart, and Manziel is an idiot!"

Heaven help Mariotta if he goes to Cleveland.  Buy body armor.

And how soon will we be talking about how the Mariotta era is over?  Seems like a genuinely good guy, but his throwing windows are about to get a whole lot smaller compared to the sea of openness that Oregon's offense provided.

any NFL team outside of Phili would draft a hyperspread QB. They essentially come into the league having to completely forget everything they knew as a QB in college. Happens in other systems, too, but, I think Mariota is destined to bust regardless of who takes him. Seemingly great guy! I feel bad saying that but after Winston (shivers) I'd go with the the Ore St kid & the CSU QB. Those are the top 3 QBs in the draft, IMO. I actually hope I'm wrong.

I highly recommend reading Chris Brown's piece on Grantland about the top four QBs in the draft. In the article Brown praises Mariotta's ability to find receivers late in the progression and claims that Oregon was running 15-30 pro-style plays per game. The article can be found at https://grantland.com/features/2015-nfl-draft-quarterback-evaluation-fo…

I could be wrong about this, but it seemed to me that every time Mariota found someone late in the progression it was because they were hand wavingly wide open 40 yards down field. That or a back out of the backfield with no defender in sight. He also had tons of time or used his legs to buy tons of time. None of those things are likely to happen on Sundays.

I'm sure Mariota can read a defense and go through his progressions. He's a smart kid and a hard worker. That doesn't mean he's going to be successful in the NFL. Especially on a crappy team.

I don't have any evidence to contradict what you are saying about open receivers and certainly agree that he will likely fail if taken by the Browns or another crappy team. He is, in my opinion, the best QB in this draft if you account for on the field and off the field performance.

I agree that based off of what we have seen so far he is the best QB in the draft. It just seems like that person never ends up being the best decision when you look back 5 years from now. It will likely be some guy drafted in the 4th round who often looked mediocre in college. I think coaching plays such a huge role in how we evaluate college players. Mariota had the best offensive minds in the country coaching him. Some of the later round QBs were probably not that lucky. What happens to Mariota if he peas thrown into Gardners shoes? He'd still be good, but not 1st round good IMO.

Thank you. Yet, I still feel the same way. I watched a lot of Oregon with him as QB & the only things I thought translated to the NFL were his attitude, desire & physical tools:size ratio. Even then I was never too impressed with his arm or accuracy in small window throws (of which he had so few). I want him to be successful but I don't see it. If anything resembling the offense he was tasked to run was in the NFL I'd reconsider but there isn't. In fact, Phili isn't anywhere near what Oregon does in CFB. I'm not sure he'd be a long term guy under Chip as what made Mariota successful at Oregon are not things he's going to be able to do in the NFL (at least not soon, at best). Yet, I'd say the same about Petty. The Baylor system is I've that relies on exploiting the inferior talent within CFB. It's basically a coach outsmarting kids that will never sniff the NFL. Both (MM especially) remind me of a modern day Andre Ware. Those systems are equal to the old 90s run & shoot where QBs only had to be able to throw a ball & read 1-2 defenders. Few, if any, became good NFL QBs. Again, I hope he proves me wrong & thanks for the read. Very worth reading!

People sure seem to overreact to an offer.  There is a difference between an offer and a trade.  12 and 19 in this draft for Mariotta isn't going to get it done.  I'm sure any team with two firsts in a draft calls every team in the top 5 to see if they'd be interested in trading, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

Tennessee probably leaked it to try to drum up better offers in the next 24 hours.  I wouldn't count the Manziel era over just yet.

Living in Tennessee, word is the Titans countered saying they'll need 3 1st round draft picks. Not sure if that means the 2 this year, and 1 in 2016, or all 3 this year, forcing the Browns to trade players or picks to get another 1st round pick just to send to the Titans. Also have big offers from the Chargers (Rivers + 1st round pick) and Eagles (1st round pick and 2 undisclosed players). Titans are loving the spot they're in.

At this point, I'll take anything to get my mind off the Tribe, so keep those Browns rumors flying!  Those of you in southeast Michigan, need to really appreciate what you have with your Tigers.  Cabrerra is worth the price of admission.

On the subject of Manziel, the NY Post had a piece on how Johnny Manziel was apparently impressing his most vocal critic on the team, Joe Thomas - LINK

There are some very complimentary quotes from Thomas, who talks about how in his words last year versus this year with Manziel has been "night and day". Of course, at the end, you do get mention of the possibility of Cleveland taking a QB.

This does not mean Manziel will have an easy time winning the Browns quarterback competition. Veteran Luke McCown is considered the favorite, and Cleveland reportedly has interest in trading for the Eagles’ Sam Bradford or selecting a quarterback Thursday in the first round of the NFL draft.

At least they realized they made a mistake and it's time go in a different direction.

Still shouldn't have picked him in the first damn place IN the first round.

I'm not skimming through 116 posts to see if someone else already made this comment. The title should really be changed to "manziel era might be done in Cleveland," because the way it's written suggests his whole career is over. It might be, but Tennessee might not agree.

Johnny 8 ball's career was over before it began. The kid is unfortunately a train wreck, and is too brittle / small to play his game in the nfl. If he were a pocket passer like Drew Brees, maybe, but his erratic style makes it difficult to succeed at the nfl level.

REPORT:  Browns attempting to trade up to #2 where they hope to ruin Marcus Mariota's life

If I were Marcus Mariota and the Browns wanted to draft me I'd do an Eli Manning NY Giants/SD Chargers type holdout. No way would I go there.

I would hope the Browns would release John Football and maybe Houston could pick him up, but in all likely hood this is just part of Chip Kelly's master plan to get Manziel.

Well it worked out for Eli. Do you hate Elway too for holding out?

Players have the option to hold out. It would seem to me the Browns need him more than he needs them. I would be very wary of playing for an organization that has been a joke at the position for so many years. This is coming from a LIons fan too. Holding out or nixing a trade isn't really all that selfish the only time a player really can decide his future in the NFL is in free agency. Most all the Mel Kipers of the world think Mariota can flourish in the NFL if he is in the right situation, I don't think Cleveland is the right situation for him.
