OT: Mancave

Submitted by BlueUPer on

The topic of memorabilia comes up once in a while (some posters have amazing collections of UMemorabilia.)  Well, I just completed my Mancave and have a few cool items.  I am always looking for new items or ideas and was wondering;  what do you have in you mancave?

I have been collecting for a while and have put together a smallish but decent collection.

Autographed pics of :  the 3 Heisman winners, Woodson, Desmond and Tom Harmon, Bo Schembechler, Bo Jackson, Denard and Tate, Rick Leach, Elroy Hirsch and Old Style commemorative Crazy Legs can, Magic, Jim Leonhard, Seaver, Starr, Rose, Nitschke, Mattingly, Reggie Jackson, Favre, Dirt from:  Yankee Stadium, the Metrodome, Tiger Stadium, and Churchill Downs.  My favorite -- Pics of my son who was All State in Hoops and Football --bragging, sorry!

So...whatta ya got?

When I started my room (I refuse to call it a man cave) I outfitted it with video and audio stuff first. Started with a high quality HD projector and a large projection screen, surround sounds system, hd satellite PVR and a PS3.

This year my wife bought me two rows of theatre seating, my ps4 is on the way for christmas and I installed a bar and put the pool table in. I did succumb to adding a few autographed jersey's that were framed as well (the peer pressure was too much): Autographed jersey's for : Woodson, Sid Crosby, Jody Shelley, PK Subban, Carey Price and Rocket Richard (my brother got ma that one for my birthday this year).

For me that's enough of that stuff and I'll continue adding technology and things of that nature. It's a great place to watch a game and so far at least, the kids and wife have left it alone.

though I have the room.

I instead have a 10 yr old daughter that living here in the heart of Buckeye land had as the #1 item on her Christmas list......Michigan Basketball tickets.

You can't teach passion like that...its in your DNA.

A few years ago I started collecting signed 8 x 10s of U of M football greats.  I now have about 100.  I don't have a mancave yet because I'm currently in a 2-bedroom condo, but we will be buying a house within the next year or so and sufficient mancave space is at the top of my checklist.

Relatedly, if anyone knows of a store that might sell some harder-to-find U of M autographs, please give a shout.  I have a few holes in my collection (examples: Jarrett Irons, Jerame Tuman, Tripp Welborne), but they are proving hard to find.  And yes, I am aware of eBay.

Ann Arbor Sports Memorabilia in Ann Arbor. It is kind of hidden. You have to go down a stairwell to get to it.

It seriously is the most amazing shop on the planet. I must have done 30 laps around the store just gazing at everything.

Autographs up the wazzu. Those great white footballs they make for bowl games with logos & season results on them, too. He even has an ORIGINAL wooden bleacher seat from Michigan Stadium. You can tell it was one of the early ones because of the style of stencil the numbers are on it.

There was an outfit selling those wooden bleachers in the early 90s when they started taking them out (they literally intalled the plastic bleachers on top of them, and they were still there in some sections through the late 90s-early 00s, IIRC).

There was some issue with the company that sold them, though... I think it had to do with one of Bo's stepsons and it turned into this big family issue/problem with the AD, etc.

I don't collect autographed memorabilia as 90% of what is sold is fake. I do have a few balls autographed by Frank Robinson, Lou Pinella, and few PGA tour players, but I got those personally.

but my wife has a Woman Cave that is at least 50% larger (she is more of a collector than I am). I have no regrets. At some point, all those items tend to become just "stuff" and you regret having spent so much money on them and see it as a burden. At least that has been our experience. Hopefully it turns out better for the rest of you.

To Devotee, I say, you are sure devoted.  I am married in Chicago and just acquired my Man Cave Space.  I have to do the adult thing though, and I only get to show a few pieces.  The ones on display are my mini Anthony Carter signed helmet, and my normal size Desmond & Woodson Heismans Signed Helmet.  I also keep the Michigan History coffee table book and commemorative rededication UConn football out.  The only other gear I have on display are my numerous tigers signed baseballs (sparky, cecil) and red wings pucks (gordie howe, federov, yzerman).

Among the non-signed stuff I have one of the metal lockers from when they redid the locker room in 2008. Also have a piece of the turf they pulled up in 1990 and a piece of the leftover FieldTurf from when they first laid that in Michigan Stadium. Have one of those whiskey bottles sold by Ezra Brooks company I the fifties to be a replica of the Little Brown jug. Bo signed a children's book for my recently born daughter when I saw him a few months before he died. Also have a Sadaharu Oh baseball signed in Japanese. Desmond also signed a replica jersey for me in class back in 1991. I also used to work in the golf industry and PGA golfers would come to our office all the time. I kept a wooden golf ball rack with balls with the logos of some of the courses I had played. One day Hale Irwin came by and was looking at them and asked if he wanted me to sign one. He did and I put it back. Over the course of the next couple of years as folders came through (many times when I wasn't even in the office) they signed balls. I have golfballs signed by Chi Chi Rodriguez, Greg Norman, Lee Janzen, Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer and about forty other guys. Not even a golfer or fan but it's a reminder of an interesting few years of my life.

Gene came by my office about five years before he died. It's an interesting collection. There are some signed by non-golfers too. I was working at a tournament once and went in to the clubhouse bar after the first round ended. I slid up to the bar and the bartender wouldn't pay attention to me with all the pros and club members trying to buy drinks for the pros. Suddenly the guy next to me who has his back turned yells at the bartender to get the guy next to him a drink because no one should have to wait that long. Shot of whiskey shows up in five seconds and when I thank the guy it turns out to be Ted Kennedy. I had a ball in my jacket so I had him sign it. I also worked an old event the Senior PGA tour worked with the NFL and got Lawrence Taylor, Dick Butkus and a couple other 90's era NFL guys to sign some golfballs.

The mancave at my house is really just my home office, which is in the finished portion of the basement. Lots of Michigan pennants and flags, some signed programs from Michigan, Tigers and Lions games dating back to the 1980s, and a couple shelves of Michigan books and drinking glasses. For the Tigers programs in particular, I managed to get signatures on the picture pages for each player, so I've got all-stars like Jack Morris all the way down to the signature of Nelson Simmons.

Of minor note, I have a collection of baseballs signed by most of members the 1984 Detroit Tigers team and a bat that I was able to get signed by Reggie Jackson at a show once. I also have a collection of dollar bills signed by the likes of Bo, Gary and Lloyd, as well as several former Michigan players such as Anthony Carter, Jarret Irons, Remy Hamilton, Elvis Grbac to name a few.

But I do have a metal shop that is my hide-away... the only UM memorabilia I have in it is the 1922 UM-Minnesota game ball (UM 38 - Gophers 0) I got from my grandfather. I have it up so the grand kids won't keep trying to grab it to play with it...

Just finished up my new man cave a few months back with tons of memorabila and gear that I naturally chose to blow money on.

However, the key prize is the hand built and painted Michigan Bar that was just completed with authentic colors and Block M.

My mancave has Horace Prettyman's actual mustache on display.  It's a great conversation starter.  I also have his shaving brush, mug, and gentlemen's talc shaker.

Best e-Bay purchase ever!

I've got a 60 inch TV, large blue wrestling mat for calisthenics, Versa-Climber, treadmill, elliptical, Powerblocks, Michigan "Man Room" sign, pic of the stadium during the first Under the Lights game, a Michigan clock and.......wait for it.......

Wife bought me one of the lockers from the old practice facility for my birthday 2 years ago.  Number 21 on it.  I know they switched those numbers around but it's still cool.

Panasonic 72" plasma with Sony sound system.  Big reclining sectional with built in cupholders. High top Michigan bar table and chairs from Holland Barstool.  Yost banner and a couple duck mounts on one wall, a couple mounted bucks and some other ducks on the opposing wall, a 6' wide framed print of Michigan Stadium, some trout and steelhead prints, a print of a dear-departed birddog, beer fridge and a rod rack full of my favorite steelhead fly rods.

I'm going to add a pool table and a bar at some point.
