I just came across this bizarre article.  Basically 4 men and 5 young boys were on a boat in an Idaho reservoir.  One man pushed another man in, who couldn't swim.  All 4 men died as a result.

Any guesses as to what happened here?  Copious amounts of mind-altering drugs, perhaps?

and chalk it up to another tragedy similar to the Louisiana one in which people unfortunately never learned to swim.

i'm really not sure what you wanted from this: cynical jokes that make light of the fact 5 children were apparently left to watch them drown from the boat and likely lost fathers/relatives perhaps?

people CONSTANTLY think a boat can't sink and just say screw it. given drownings often occur due to panic, it's not out of the realm of possibility they kept jumping in and kept getting dragged under. the idea psychotropics are being used around 9 children is asinine and my guess is you didn't get to that part of the story before LOL MUST POST LOL

i share geaux_blue's reaction to this. this really isn't an amusing story that invites playful speculation. it's just sad and horrible. on the other hand, when a flight attendant loses his shit because a passenger is disrespectful, jumps on the intercom to tell off the world, steals a beer, opens up & slides down the emergency evacuation chute, and runs like hell to his car, that's amusing. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/10/nyregion/10attendant.html?scp=2&sq=fl…

More people on a large body of water who can't swim without life jackets.  Brilliant!  IF YOU CAN'T SWIM, STAY OUT OF THE WATER!!!!!  I can't fly,so, I stay in the airplane.  Seems like common sense to me.

Luckily the kids were smart enough not to jump into the water too.

Assuming one of the 4 men was the owner of the boat, shouldn't he know to toss a life jacket to the drowning guy, instead of jumping in after him?  This story just doesn't make a whole lot of sense right now.  I think more details will be coming out soon.

It's dangerous as hell to jump in the water after a drowning man. The victim is panicking, and it's not at all uncommon for them to drag a would-be rescuer down with them. Giving the victim something to grab onto (like a pole) is much, much safer.

The situation in the story is clearly the worst-case scenario, though. I can see one guy jumping in after the first guy was pushed into the water, but why the other two? (Here I suspect alcohol comes into play.) Maybe they all jumped in at the same time. The original drowning victim starts pulling a second guy down, who panics and starts to pull the third guy down, who in turn panics and starts pull the fourth guy down.

"There were enough vests for all four adult men to have them on. However, they did not have them on," Morgan said.
If you can't swim, toss your buddy the life jacket and a rope. You see this all the time at South Bend. People go to raft down the man made white water course there and they can't swim. Luckily the operators force you to wear a life jacket, still if you kayak down there it seems like you spend more time helping pull kids out of the water than kayaking.

I never made it that far. I quit at First Class, which is where they lose a lot of kids. School activities and sports start to get in the way. That's why I really admire the people who make it all the way to Eagle. I think the time and effort it takes to get to Eagle Scout is a little underappreciated. You sacrifice a lot.

My tiny mind was not capable of juggling all of those things.

Although I find this as interesting of a story as any "train wreck" can be, it only makes me wonder at what point in the pre-season or season do we do away with OT posts? I'm sure Yahoo and Google have plenty of people posting their theories on the how and why of this tragedy and this forum topic would be best suited for those forums. Sorry.

the chances of you not dying increase by about 3 million percent. I used to be a beat reporter and covered perhaps 20 drownings. Every person was not wearing a life jacket and half were drunk.

I don't understand why the message seems to miss a lot of people. Even good people fall victim to Darwinism.
