OT: Mallett Draft Stock Falling
Per NBC and Mel Kiper, Mallett is dropping out of the first round for "baggage". Having gone to the U with the kid, I'd assume by baggage they simply mean douchebaggery.
Or being an idiot.

What is the "U" you reference? Are you referring to Michigan? Or Arkansas? I'm confused. And do you claim to have first-hand knowledge of Mallett's alleged douchebaggery? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your statement, I'm just curious as to your credentials.

I meant UM, should have clarified my slang. And yes, I have first-hand knowledge of his character - met him for the first time right after he had enrolled early and continued to run in the same loose circles until he left Ann Arbor.
On top of my own experiences, I think it's general knowledge that he wasn't very respected as a leader on the team. I don't think his teammates trusted him or appreciated his arrogance.

Love the Stark County guy. I hope for his sake he doesn't, but I could see Mallett flaming out in the NFL. Not quite Ryan Leaf flame out, but a flame out nonetheless.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
i for one remember him getting kicked out of skeeps freshmen year on multiple occassions (and trying to get BJs from chicks by just syaing IM FUCKING RYAN MALLET)
February 9th, 2011 at 3:43 PM ^
No, that was Ben Roethlisberger.
Wait, now that I think of it, has anyone ever seen Ryan and Ben in the same room?!?!?!?!
February 9th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
Realize that he can throw the football out of the stadium, I imagine his stock will go back up.
I never witnessed any character issues with Ryan, but did witness him putting holes in receivers gloves with his cannon of an arm

I remember hearing from multiple people while I was still on campus that he was once at Skeeps spitting on people from the upper part of the bar because, "Hey, I'm Ryan Mallett."

At least he's not getting drop-kicked like this:

I used to stop the TV on mexican wresting for moments like this. 'Little people' is the best wrestling accessory for them.

If the Lions could get him in Round 3, I think he would be a pretty solid backup.........especially because the Lions have used their backups so extensively.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:13 PM ^
If Henne went in the second round it's hard to see Mallet falling to the third rough, though that would be nice. There are a lot of teams with crummy QB situations that would probably nab him in the second round as a possible value pick.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
I'm not sure that I see the Lions getting a QB at all this year. Those that saw the field for the Lions last season proved themselves fairly competent. Certainly not in round 3 where they'll be looking for a LB or OL.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
I admittedly haven't been paying much attention lately, but last I checked Stanton's contract has expired, and Hill has one more year left. Because Stafford is fairly injury prone, I'd have to believe they will be drafting a developmental QB this year.
It might not happen until Rounds 6-7 though, where Mallett won't be available.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
to prevent Stafford from being injury-prone is to not have an aggregate sieve for an offensive line.
Or teach the guy how to NOT fall on his bad shoulder.
February 9th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
The Lions were in the top third of the league in quarterback hits....
... just sayin
February 9th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
as far as the nfl draft goes, it only takes one team to look past a player's baggage. for that reason i dont see mallett falling much further than the early second round. some nfl gm is gonna be salivating over his physical tools.

cause I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR MY TONE TONIGHT

How many people I've spoken too that have also said Mallett is a huge douchebag. Hes one of those guys that the word douchebag was created for. I have no firsthand knowledge, just saying that this is a widely spread sentiment.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
But does being a douchebag matter to NFL scouts? After all, Matt Leinart got drafted in the first round.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:22 PM ^
I hope the Redskins draft him
no scratch that
I hope the Redskins trade every good player they have plus their next ten first round picks to move up so they can draft him
February 9th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Snyder will have to give him at least $150 million in guaranteed cash, then hire a coach whose offense somehow doesn't involve the use of the quarterback position.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
me think of Ryan Leaf. Same sort of mind.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
Also, are there any another 6' 6" quarterbacks?
February 9th, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
Dan McGwire was 6' 8" and he was not so good. Manning is 6' 5" though.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
In all the scouting reports I've read his plusses are always physical (big arm, "drives" the ball, leads the receiver, etc.). The minuses are usually something along the lines of "doesn't always read coverage correctly" or "gets easily overloaded by information."
Good and bad, eh? There should be lots of hope because only a handful of people can throw like him. Lots of QBs take time to mature and learn. Mallet could be one of these. He might be the type whose best years are in the 30+ age range. It seems unlikely that he'll produce immediately along the lines of Ryan / Bradford.
He could also wind up being Ryan Leaf, another physically gifted (and very successful) collegian who performed poorly at "the next level." (I don't have the sense that he's quite in the Leaf zone.)
I just wonder why Rodriguez hasn't been blamed yet for any of his failings. After all, he did run him out of town. /s
February 9th, 2011 at 5:27 PM ^
The thing is that physical talents are a threshold that need to be crossed to succeed in the NFL. Once you hit the min talent level, other things start to become much more important, especially for quarterbacks, than physical talent. Draft history is riddled with big-armed draft busts with jelly for brains. Mallett seems like he might fall into that category.
February 9th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
I always hoped that the Panthers would take Mallett with the #1 pick (after Luck pledged to stay in school) just so I wouldn't have to watch that d-bag Claussen next year. The Panthers always find a way to waste draft picks every year so why not take Mallett with the first pick (aside from the obvious of him not being first pick-worthy)?
February 9th, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
I could see him bombing the Wonderlic.
February 9th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Ha ha!
February 9th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
A friend of mine who is an independent scout said that he wouldn't touch Mallett with a 10 foot pole. He said that he has a long laundry list of off-field problems that no one really knows on the surface. He also said that his mechanics, footwork and work ethics(lack thereof) are another reason why he's not considered to be a 1st rounder. FWIW, he has Mallett as a 3rd/4th rounder which includes his character concerns. There will be teams who will take him earlier than that because of his potential.
February 9th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
With strong armed college quarterbacks. If you watch mallet on tape you start to notice that he makes alot of throws off his back foot, which you can get away with in college because the windows to make most throws are bigger. In the NFL you throw off your back foot it's underthrown or an interception.

Jay Cutler in a nutshell.

"Per NBC and Mel Kiper......." Just a quick sidenote, Mel had his name legally changed to "Mel Kiper Draft Guru" so I guess we're somewhat obligated to refer to him as such in these threads.....he wanted to go with "Tool" but it was, unfortunately for him, already taken by a fairly decent band.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:21 AM ^
... pretty sure Mallet goes 1st round
