Alone this isn't a huge story unless your a UT grad and want pristine heroes. However late last year UT suspended their long time, very successful women's track and field coach just months after giving her a huge raise. She was let go at the beginning of the year just prior to the indoor season based on a consensual relationship with an athlete. She has since considered legal action vs. Texas (probably will claim discrimination based on her race, gender and sexual orientation).

While Major Applewhite appears to have not engaged with a subordinate as she did, it leaves Texas exposed should she pursue something legally. Just the threat of legal action is now increased.

On a lighter note, Chris Sims is wondering why that student never called him back.

Using the term Wildcat to describe a direct snap to anyone other than a QB is like calling any rock band from the early 90s Grunge.

Not unless she worked for him in some way.

It's almost a non-issue if he's not married.

You guys realize how many assistant football and basketball coaches are under 30, played in college, etc.? If they're single, and they work at a university...they're going to bang students, let's be real. There are plenty of 27, 28, 29 year old men in this world hooking up with 21-22 year old college students. It's not that bad. The cheating part is the biggest problem.

Someone also said he used his power/status to get this girl...

That's total bullshit. He's Major fucking Applewhite at the University of TEXAS! No one gives a shit he's the offensive coordinator. He was one of the best QBs in that schools recent history.

Do you honestly think if this was Mike Hart, someone would be like "oh man, he's using his EMU celebrity RB coach status to get girls!" No.

So much this. The act itself is not only nothing new but completely legal. Ethical? Depends. Was this student under him in any way (in a working sense, lol)? If so, sure, it's wrong. If not, move along. It can be an issue for him if married, etc but that is a personal individual case. The act of a 30ish year old dude banging a consensual adult student is not my business as many would if they could and it's not illegal. Add in that it's a guy many women on the Texas campus would happily bang and I'd bet he has turned it down more than done it. Finally, I do find the wording curious. I've said (assumed) it to be a woman all along but they only say "adult student". That is interesting but still not my business so I don't give a shit, lol. His only crime was a personal one if married, etc.

Yeah, I don't get it.  Major Applewhite is 34 years old, this happened 4 years ago so he was 30 at the time and had a consenting sexual encounter with an 18-23 year old...so what.  Now, if he was married as someone mentioned it's certainly not cool, and if his wife was pregnant it's even worse.  But, I don't personally see why it matters that it was a student.  He's not a professor.  As long as he no direct influence over this student such as if it were an athlete I don't really see the big deal.  Age doesn't matter, the fact that it's a student doesn't matter, just the fact that it's a student at the school he works at.  That part doens't bother me.  The part about cheating on his wife...that's another story.  But, I don't see why an employer has any right to tell who two consenting adults should or should not be romantically involved assuming there is no conflict of interest such as coach/athlete, professor/student, or supervisor/employee.

I’m assuming that Texas has a non-fraternization policy, which is why he was subject to discipline. My first thought when reading this was “so what, he banged a co-ed who is an adult”. Given his status and position with the team in addition to the influence he has over the young men he leads, that makes him kind of sleazy and a poor example. Sad to say that these actions do not make him exceptional. If he did cheat on his pregnant wife, that just makes it worse.

I think some are getting too wrapped up in the legality of this.  No, he won't go to jail because she was old enough to consent.  But it's not like everything that happens to be legal is good from an image standpoint.

A guy working at a school sleeping with students a decade younger than him at said school is getting into sketchy territory to begin with.  At some places that alone can be a violation of the organizational code of conduct.  That he was married and his wife nine months pregnant at the time makes him look really sleazy.   That he was doing this as a member of an institution (the football program) that represents the school in the public eye is going to make the school uncomfortable.  Would you want to hear a story like this about a U-M assistant coach?  I wouldn't.

Most universities stipulate that undergrads are off-limits to employees. Since it was a consensual relationship with an adult, this isn't a legal matter, but it likely is a violation of university policy. So yes, it is an issue.

Why in this country are we so intrigued with what other people do with their private parts. Could it possibly be that our sex lives are so boring and nonexistent that we feel we have to judge other people for stuff that we wish we could be doing. Food for thought. People sit here and judge this guy because secretly they wish they were him. Got a pregnant wife and a girl on the side while most guys reading this article haven't banged their wife since bush was in office. It's not our place to say what a guy should or shouldn't do with his one eyed Willie. Stop hatin
