OT-Madden on PS3

Submitted by Ziff72 on
I just recently purchased the PS3 and I picked up the Madden because it was on sale even though I have pretty much just played NCAA on PS2 for the last 5 years or so. After a week or so of getting the new control configuration down I have to say I am pretty disappointed. The player movement seems pretty herky jerky, seems like unless I am sprinting it's hard to even move in a straight line. The acceleration seems off as well, I see a hole in the line but by the time I get to it my RB is getting blasted by a safety coming from 15 yards away. I know this explanation is not the best, but it is hard to explain it, it just doesn't seem smooth like the PS2 movement was. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I don't want to go buy the NCAA if it is going to be the same thing.

I only played NCAA for years because Madden games were too arcadey if that makes sense. It was way too easy to put up points and star players (or players with 99 speed) dominated games. Then I played last year's NCAA and it sucked. This year's NCAA they attempted to fix some things, but I was still disappointed when I played it. Finally this year I heard good things about Madden turning into a more realistic football game. I bought Madden for the first time in 6 years. I actually prefer Madden to NCAA this year. The movement thing is something to get used to, no one can simply cut on a dime like they did in the previous generation's games. NCAA and Madden move similar in that way. Play-calling is a big part of being successful. On run plays don't use the sprint button until you have picked the hole you are going to run through. It is really hard to move side to side if you are sprinting. Be patient then when the hole opens up sprint through it. How many games have you played? It could take more than a week to get used to the game's mechanics. If you don't like Madden then I wouldn't get NCAA. The only advantage to NCAA is the larger amount of playbooks can be kind of fun to run, but even then the plays seem kind of broken. The zone read or QB choice has never felt good on NCAA. It seems like a crap shoot if you will be successful or not.

I think you are on point with the cutting while sprinting. I noticed that a bit in practice. I'm trying to get that timing down. I am used to NCAA PS2 where you could set up the big juke on the corner or pick thru a hole easier. Seems like the holes are bigger in Madden but guys come out of nowhere and flatten me. I like it to be tough so I don't like the Aracde style as well or running the same plays. I don't mind not being able to score either it just didn't seem smooth. Maybe I don't like that much realism.

I'm not sure if this is true or not for Madden (assuming so) but in NCAA 2010 the Defense runs hard if you're holding Sprint down. This might account for the Safeties running up to make tackles from 10 - 15 yards out. Just something to watch out for. I know this isn't an EA suggestion thread but I'm really hoping that at some point they make audibles in their games more realistic. I'd like to have the QB look to the sideline once the Square is pressed to allow for the option of a fake audible quick snap (did you see NW MO St. run this in the D-II championship? AWESOME) and to make it more accurately represent the amount of time it runs off the clock. Maybe when it gets closer to NCAA 2011 time we can start a suggestion/ wish list thread.

I bought Madden, and NCAA when I got my PS3. NCAA is much better, and from my perspective, more smooth than Madden. I've always liked NCAA better than Madden. From the gameplay, even to the management of your team. Madden gets so much hype, but I prefer recruiting and managing with the college feel better.

Ha! I had one of these same rants a few months ago about NCAA! I had been playing all of the NCAA's on the PS2 for a looooonnnggg time before I finally bought a PS3 in July. NCAA 10 is a lot harder than past games, but it's also a lot more realistic. The controls are way different and the movements are way different, you just have to get used to em.

NCAA on PS3 is way way better than Madden I think. It isn't harder than the PS2 version, just different. When you get used to it you'll enjoy it and think it's better.

I know what you mean I only have PS2 and play madden and NCAAF on it however when I go over to friends houses, I agree with your statement about Madden and NCAAF seems to me tough to run in a straight line and the camera view always changes as you go to run outside

NCAA never seems to go for big improvements, just small tweaks. Madden usually gets the big overhaul, which is understandable since it's the king of sports game sales. If NCAA ever came out with a "lite" version for $10-$15 and you could only recruit and run a dynasty and upload draft classes to Madden, I would do that. I have spent the last few years recruiting 90% of the time because it's more fun to build a program than play the game. NCAA has been out for years and they've had Miami players come out of the fog onto the playing field, though it did look pretty cheap and cheesy. This year tOSU's band does script Ohio. How come our players haven't run out and touched the Go Blue banner? I have my doubts that they will even have the expanded stadium on next years version. Also, I'd give a shiny new nickel to someone that can effectively and efficiently run the zone read option on NCAA.

I've surprisingly had some success running the zone read recently. Mainly it's been against the computer and it still doesn't work all that great every game, but I've been able to put up good offensive numbers running it with both Michigan and Oregon's playbooks. Obviously, the blocking for the zone read is way off, so you can't really try to read the DE like a real QB would. So, instead, I try to look for a hole the way the quarterback is supposed to take it. If its there keep the ball, otherwise hand it off. Most of the time I hand it off, but occasionally I can get 7 yards or so when I keep will the QB. Also, mix up the run plays you choose and call some designed hand off, speed options, and the zone read that has the tackle pulling (QB Wrap, I think it's called), though I still hand it off most of the time on this play too. So, it's possible and I'd recommend trying to run it with the Oregon playbook at first which gives more of a variety of plays and formations, like many triple options out of the shotgun. To have success with the triple option, I try to determine if there is room to run outside with the QB and if there isn't then I hand it off right away. Hopefully this helps, though I don't blame you if you don't feel like trying it, because it does take practice to be able to recognize when to keep the ball and when to hand it off.

I hadn't bought Madden for a couple years because the next gen version was horrible. So, when everyone was saying that this years was so much better I went out and bought it. I do agree that this it is better but it still has a long way to go in my opinion. The main reason I bought Madden was because they now have online franchise mode but they can't even get that right. Plus the servers for online franchise are really bad and you tend to get disconnected a lot. I don't have that problem with NCAA. I think Madden is on the right path they just need to keep working it. Overall I think NCAA is much more fun to play. The game play feels smoother and the online dynasty mode is great. By the way, if anyone is interested in joining an NCAA online dynasty for the PS3 we have some open spots in one. Just send treb12 a message on PS3 as he is the commish

I have both games. I think this is the best Madden game in a while, but I agree that it's really difficult to run the ball, especially on the higher levels. I like the game, but it can be really frustrating at times. I liked NCAA better. It's a lot easier to get used to I thought and a lot less frustrating to play. I would buy it.

Stick with NCAA on the PS2. I have had all of the next gen EA football games, they don't compare to the PS2 gameplay. Just update some of the players/names on teams you play with.
