OT: Luck plans on staying for senior season at Stanford
I'm not going to take the Harbaugh angle; instead, I find it interesting on it's own that a near lock for the #1 pick is going to go back to school for his senior season. Impressive.
"SI's Peter King reported on Football Night in America on NBC Sunday that Stanford QB Andrew Luck's "current plan" is to stay in school rather than leave for the 2011 NFL draft.

I guess that means Stanford has a fair amount of Luck in their program...
December 26th, 2010 at 10:32 PM ^
I know, corny. I couldn't resist though. I am an impulsive poster. You get the bad with the good.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:41 PM ^
i guess thats just the luck of the draw..
December 26th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
I'd say Luck has nothing to do with it
December 26th, 2010 at 11:24 PM ^
...omnipresent.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:40 PM ^
He's only a redshirt sophmore this year.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:29 PM ^
A twist worthy of M. Night Shyamalan.
And met with the same reaction...a slight gurgle of the stomach.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:26 PM ^
Shyamalan always has those twists. Did you know that the guy in the Sixth Sense was Bruce Willis the whole time?
December 27th, 2010 at 1:12 AM ^
Gotta love Charlie...

there's a lot of risk involving coming back to college. What if he has a career ending injury? What if he regress? He's turning down millions of guaranteed money when he could always come back to get a degree later. It cost Matt Leinart. It didn't cost Sam Bradford but two shoulder injuries at OU could've cost him dearly.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
Luck is an Architectural Design major.
I could argue that going pro now increases his risk of a career-ending injury in the next year than coming back to college.
If he gets his degree, he'll be marketable for a good job in the workforce regardless of whatever injury he suffers in football.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:36 PM ^
he's turning down guaranteed to an upward of 15-20 millions(assuming that there's a rookie cap) or 60 millions(with no rookie cap). That's a lot of money to turn down just to come back to college. He can use his NFL money to come back to Stanford at some point in the summer to get a degree.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
Not everyone cares so much about giant sums of money.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:41 PM ^
that may be true but turning down guaranteed money from the NFL is almost dumb.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:45 PM ^
that there won't be a lockout
December 26th, 2010 at 10:54 PM ^
Luck would still get guaranteed money. He can use it for next year to get a degree while studying the offensive playbook.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:45 PM ^
ask Jake Long.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:41 PM ^
and go back to school with a really nice car and a Rodney Dangerfield suit of rooms after football.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
Nice. Can you do the triple lundy.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:42 PM ^
Yeah, but Senior year would be more fun with $40 million and a mansion in Palo Alto instead of $40 and three roommates.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:49 PM ^
If I had to guess, I don't think Luck is hurting for money. You can never have too much, but he doesn't need to turn pro to support the family. And I think if he has roommates, it's by choice.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:53 PM ^
His father is Oliver Luck, AD for WVU. He had a long career in sports administration, so you are correct, he isn't hurting for money. But I'm sure Andrew would like to make his own money as well.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:58 PM ^
I know who is father is and being an AD isn't his highest paying job. I would go pro if I were in his shoes. But, you never know about kids who don't need to do it for family support reasons. Leinart stayed because he didn't need to turn pro and it wasn't for academics. I think he took one class his whole senior year and it was dance or soemthing along those lines. Didn't Bradford stay also for the experience?
December 26th, 2010 at 11:23 PM ^
Oh I get it, but I don't think any of us are really going to know all the reasons a guy leaves or stays. Bradford said a variety of things (I just lurvvvv Oklahoma so much) but a lot of people thought he wanted to go to a more complete team than the Lions. I have no idea what Luck is thinking and what might cause him to change that thinking.
December 27th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
Have to be an idiot not to.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
Uh, your argument makes no sense. If he goes pro and suffers a career ending injury he can still go back to school and get his degree, now with the benefit of a $30 million signing bonus.
December 27th, 2010 at 10:01 AM ^
If he gets his degree, he'll be marketable for a good job
Let me stop you right there... if I had to do it all over again, I would not pick this career in all reality. Architects are amazingly underpaid and under valued.
If he goes #1, that first contract he signs will be more money than he would make in his entire 50 year career as an Architect.
December 27th, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
preach it, brother. TV and movies just love architects. However, reality pisses on architects.
I'm not even using my Michigan architecture degree anymore. Why? Because I'm making way more money as a construction project manager. Sad, really.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
Was the extra year what cost Leinart? Didn't he finish third in the Heisman and lead USC to the MNC. I thought his arm issues were pretty well known.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:47 PM ^
Leinart only came back because he needed offseason elbow surgery and wasn't going to be able to workout for pro teams (making it much less likely that he would be a top pick). SC staged the "I love college!" press conference to put a positive spin on things for him but he came back because of the injury and was still a top-10 pick a year later (people just viewed this as a "slip" because he fell behind guys like Bush and Young).

This post should definitely have "CC" in the title.

I'm just waiting for the poster who will suggest Harbaugh bring Luck here. Inevitable.

Luck in the backfield with D-Rob and Tate in the slot?
Hmm...

eventually turned into a CC thread at about the 58-60 th post by desmonlon
December 26th, 2010 at 10:36 PM ^
happened on the rivals site. Every possible permutation of CC dribble was conjured up. People on that site would make reasons to post some news and tangentially make som off handed remark about CC. It's starting to get worse here.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:53 PM ^
It has an "OT" label. The post is about college football.....and it doesn't mention anything about a coaching change. Luck is one of the top 10 players in college football right now. He's relevant to the game in general.
Would you request a "CC" if the post was about Cam Newton? Terrelle Pryor?
December 26th, 2010 at 10:32 PM ^
I think coming back cost Jake Locker but I do have to tip my hat to the kid for doing it. Wish him the best of Luck and we will see them in the Rose Bowl next year.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:39 PM ^
he never was a 1st rounder to begin with. I saw a preseason draft board when I came to Cincinnati. Jake Locker was graded as a 2nd/3rd rounder so he never was a 1st rounder. McShay is an idiot for thinking that he's a 1st rounder and even NFL people blasted him for filling his head with possibility of being a #1 overall pick.
Whenever a player decides to come back, it's usually because they weren't graded as a 1st rounder by the national scouting service.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:03 PM ^

I hope it's not the same service that Donovan Warren used last year.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:20 PM ^
submit their profile to the draft adivsory committee so they're the same service.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
The big difference is that no one could figure out why most people thought Locker was a #1 pick last year either.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:43 PM ^
in the second half of the season. Locker was terrible, and I couldn't stop thinking about the money he tossed. Forever changed my mind about early entry - if you're a top 20 pick, you go.
December 26th, 2010 at 10:56 PM ^
There's a reason why he came back to Washington. He received a 2nd/3rd round grade from the draft committee.
December 26th, 2010 at 11:11 PM ^
Didn't know that. All I heard last year (and pre-season this) was that he was a sure-shot early pick
<br>Still, I bet Snyder would have taken him
December 26th, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
Did the same thing. Was the consensus #1 pick after his Junior year.
