OT: LSU to brew on campus?

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
LSU is where I'm looking to transfer next. No, not because of academics or sports, but brewing:
"At some schools around the country, they have mini breweries on campus," says president and CEO of the LSU Alumni Association, Charlie Roberts, pausing to clarify his pronunciation: "That's m-i-n-i breweries, not m-a-n-y," he adds helpfully. According to Roberts, Chancellor Michael Martin believes an LSU-branded brew could contribute significantly to the school's marketing and generate revenue for its programs
No word on if they want to be certified like UC-Davis as a brewmaster's academy or not. HT:Doc Saturday

Rumor has it that the beers name will be "LSU 55" attempting to piggyback Bud 55. In this case the 55 does not stand for calories, but rather the average IQ of incoming freshman to LSU's Honors College. The CEO, Walter Isaccson, speaking from his office at The Bearded Clam, the LSU owned and operated micro brewery, spoke to a group of truck drivers, alumni and homeless people, saying, "It has long been the dream of alumni to get crocked. LSU is happy to announce that it is tapping the market where others have failed. Since the demise of Billy Beer, there has been a gap in the market of cheap, tasteless, skunky beers. These are all the same qualities we find in our students and alumni." "LSU is proud to offer this pale, stale ale with the foam on the bottom as a testament to its commitment to lower education"

So, I have been browsing MGoBlog for a little over four years now and have never got around to actually making an account to post, but this message is finally worthy of such an occasion. It is now that I post because there was in fact a third person involved in the brewing of this hefewizen, and it was I. To those who have only experimented with partial mash or just extract, I strongly encourage you to try full mash. It is certainly more complicated with a lot more opportunity for things to go wrong but the ability to control each and every thing about your beer is a great feeling. When you crack your first beer open and taste the sweet nectar and know that you are responsible for each and every nuance, it is a great feeling. When it tastes just the way you wanted it to, it's nice to know your the reason why. Yes, I dare argue one might take as much pride in their beer as they might be of their own child.

am i the only one that thinks this is awesome?!?! i would love to take a brewery class at UM. i have lots of friends on campus that brew their own beer, but it'd be sweet to have a structured program in it. and, to have an official UM micro-brew would be the most money making pit of a micro-brew in the world! sign me up for the petition to start one in a2

They have a pretty damn good brewing program. I think a lot of their students end up working for Budweiser, Coors, etc. The wine program is pretty good to I heard, should be when Mondavi gives them tons of cash.

I think MSU should have a brewery for sure. Their ag programs would go hand in hand with a brewery station, and Michigan the state really has a lot of good ranked micros already. Some University level science help could go a long way towards keeping Michigan in the top 4 craft brewery states.
