OT: Looking for a good movie

Submitted by Dark Blue on

So I'm looking for a good movie, now before you tell me I should watch the A-Team or something, you should know I'm kind of an indie movie buff. The last two newer movies I've seen and liked were The Sunset Limited and The Vicious Kind.

Thanks for your help board.

EDIT: Jesus I can't spell today.

Excellent indie movie starring Paul Giamatti, one of my favorite actors, and a kid named Alex Shaffer, who is in his first movie and was cast because he was a champion prep wrestler. Great script, funny, great plot. Written and directed by rising star Tom McCarthy. Just saw it on Wednesday night at an indie theater in DC.

Mr. Nobody is probably one of my 5 favorite films of all time, and it's generally unknown. Made and released in France (still can't buy the DVD/Bluray in US yet) but it's in English and stars Jared Leto and Dianne Kruger. It's made by Jaco Van Dormael, one of those indie guys that makes a film every 10 years or so. It's a trip.

If you are into thrillers at all (not horror) you should check out a movie called Exam. I had never heard of until I saw it on the netflix instant queue and was very pleasantly surprised how good of a movie it was.

It's able to be thought provoking and exciting enough without blood being splattered everywhere. Plus its not very well known.

My friend,

You will never see this as it is way too far down the thread, but I propose to you not a movie, but a resource by which you may never wonder this again.

I recommend highly the website Criticker (.com) - You enter what you think of however many movies you want (At least 10, most enter their entire history). Then, it keeps on file the ratings of thousands of others. It finds people who like the movies you like, and makes a handy list of recommendations based upon movies they have seen that you haven't.

More than recommendations - it gives you a probable score for whatever movie you run across based off the weighted scores of those most similar to you in taste. I've found this to be very accurate.

It weights movies by tiers - you rate 1-100 however you will, and it breaks them up by your top 10% (This is brilliant, as some people are overly kind, and rate movies that bore them an 85 while every movie they like falls in 98-100 - whereas others are harsher critics, the kind of people who never give a score above 70, unless it's directed by Kubrick - with the percentile weighting, it doesn't matter how harsh or feathery people are.

You can even get your friends to sign up, and it will find movies that are acceptable to you both.

I am not affiliated with them, I just think it is one of the best websites around. A brilliant idea that is well executed to the benefit of all movie fans. I hope the pool of people will grow and thus increase my own pool of knowledge from which to draw.

you will love the classic, Hoop Dreams.  It's been on ESPN Classic for the past couple days.  A great movie of triumph and struggle of two inner city kids trying to make it to the D1/NBA level.  One thing that you don't see is the AAU involvement which is the norm for our society.
