OT: Looking for Alumni in Upstate NY

Submitted by Michigan Arrogance on

Just moved to upstate NY, north of Saratoga. Was wondering if anyone on the board knows anything about the following:

1) UM Dental alums practicing in Saratoga & northward

2) The UMAA of the Capital District

3) UM School of Ed. alums in the area- I'm looking for a teaching position, again north of Saratoga.

I'll be checking LinkedIn and the UMAA website soon. Thanks in advance.

I lived in Albany for 9 years and moved last year (thank god). Anyway the local alumni chapter watched games at Jillian's downtown. Not a great showing and the tv's and food sucked. I chose to watch at home so I could scream in peace.

I'm not going to be of much help, other than I am familiar with the tri-city area (and might move there in the near future).  I'm just curious as to why you chose Saratoga -- significant other, or birthplace, or coincidence?  Secondly, I was under the impression that Michigan does not recognize New York teaching certificates, and vice-versa (am I wrong?).  Are you planning on doing your Master's in New York, or teaching in a private school?

I'm in Lake Placid, and I'm a teacher. Most of the districts up here post jobs on Monster, in the local paper, and on the official NYSED site, which is olasjobs.org or something like that. Click on the capital district. Most of the independent schools post on nais.org. What do you teach?

Also, why do you ask about dental alums? I have a few connections in that field, but I'm not sure what you're looking for.

Spouse got a job out here (I also grew up in the CD so I know the area).

Looking for a good dentist for the fam, in addition to the 1-2 rec's from people I know in the area.

I have heard the opposite: that MI & NY have very good interstate reciprocity. I've had to produce a MI teaching Cert & UM trans, take the NYS teaching tests. No real issues.

Looking for Physics primarily, maybe Math or Earth Science. Public, private, w/e.

Applied to several jobs via OLAS, but no call backs at all. I'm not sure if it's b/c I'm still in the process of NYS certif, or what. The other thing is, it's hard to find out what districts are NOT part of the OLAS system.

Go physics! Not sure where you are, but if you're within striking distance of Saratoga Springs, there's a fair amount of postings down there. In Lake Placid, I know that NSA, a private school catering to sports kids, was looking for a science/math guy. Email me at my username at hotmail and we can talk..

I am a dental alum practicing in Stowe, Vermont. A little ways away from Saratoga, but if you like to ski, you should venture up this way. I actually volunteer for the ski patrol here, and it is significantly better than anything Michigan has to offer (though still not Colorado or Utah quality).

I am a UM Alum '11 and moved to Western NY (Rochester, to be exact) for a teaching job right after graduating from Michigan last spring. I can see from the trusty google maps that Saratoga isn't terribly close to Rochester, but I work at a charter school organization that has schools in Troy, NY, as well. If that's an area close enough to you, let me know and I can get you more information. I've also gone through the switching certifications process from MI to NY, so I can be of help with that, as well, if need be!

Troy is a bit far for me (50mins or so). And the certification has been fine, so far... the only thing is they won't let you take more than one cert. exam per day. I need to take at least 3, so it's taking longer than I would want. Thanks!
