OT: Lollapalooza 2012 Lineup Announced

http://lineup.lollapalooza.com/

Headliners include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Black Sabbath (lolwut), and The Black Keys.  There are quite a few of the "minor"/non-headliner acts I'm very interested in seeing; Justice, Franz Ferdinand, The Temper Trap, Of Monsters and Men, Band of Skulls, Little Dragon and SBTRKT, Wale, and maybe Florence + the Machine (and quite a few more).  I saw RHCP back in '06 so I'd maybe see them again but with John Frusciante gone I don't know if they're the "same band".

Anywho, what's everyone's thoughts on music festivals?  Anybody plan on going to Lollapalooza, ever attended, attended and hated it and will never do it again?!?

Lolla is deciding not to give Indie fans the finger this year.  Excellent.  Last year's lineup was atrocious.

I thought last years lineup was good as far as the indie music the girlfriend exposes me to: Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, Manchester Orchestra...KiD CuDi was there too, although he's really blown up.

part of it is that I dislike both Bright Eyes and Arctic Monkeys, but 2010 had, like, the National and Arcade Fire back to back, and last year just didn't have anyone like that.

As a fan of heavier music, I thought last year's lineup was amazing, what with Mastodon and Deftones both on the bill. Couple that with My Morning Jacket, and you have three of my all-time favorite bands at one festival - plus heavy hitters like Eminem and Foo Fighters.

This year's lineup is meh for me. Oh well.

Could care less about Black Sabbath, but the other Headliners are top notch.

On top of the mentions in the OP,  Passion Pit, Miike Snow, The Gaslight Anthem, Sigur Ros, Toro Y Moi, The Walkmen, Tame Impala and Neon Indian are all groups I'm excited to see again live.

Great, great line-up.

Which had one of the greatest lineups I've ever heard of (Daft Punk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pearl Jam, Black Keys, Roots, Interpol, Stooges, Modest Mouse, Femi Kuti, Patti Smith, Ted Leo, LCD, Hold Steady, Spoon, TV On the Radio, Rapture), but it's pretty good.  Also excited for the Weeknd.

Would have been a great time, great lineup as you say.  I was wanting very badly to go to 2008 as well but didn't make it (RATM alone would have been pretty cool).  I kind of agree with you about last year, though I was happy with a few of the indie/non-headliners they had; I fell in love with The Kills last year and was excited to see them at Lolla.  On the other hand I was also able to check out a few "up-and-comers"/"no-namers", who weren't very big yet, and support them.

Also on there: The Shins, M83, The Tallest Man on Earth, Kevin Devine among many others.  I'm not in tune with the past line ups but this is pretty sick.

I'm contemplating on going because I couldn't go to Coachella this year.

If I go I'm excited to see:

At the Drive In, M83, Frank Ocean, The Weekd, Childish Gambino, Santigold, The Big Pink, Yoro Y Moi, Gary Clark Jr, Washed Out, Chairlift, Polica, Star Slinger, The War on Drugs.

Out of those I'm most excited about At the Drive-in, Polica and THE WEEKND.  For me it is worth it just to go see The Weeknd.  All you lucky Canadians get to see him many times, but I think this is the first time he will be playing in the US.

I went last year for the first time in my lifetime, and it was an amazing experience. I personally liked a lot of the music last year, especially Arctic Monkeys and the Foo Fighters ended up being probably my favorite live show ever (especially when we were getting poured on).

Aside from the music though, just experiencing the atmosphere at Lollapalooza is a great time. You can pretty much find a nice area of grass, pop a squat, and just chill for a day with some music surrounding you on all sides.

As for this year, I'm excited for the lineup. I don't think the headliners have as much wow factor, but it's definitely a "deeper" lineup, if you will. I intend on making it to at least one of the days, and I highly recommend it to those who can afford it. If you're a big live music guy, considering the price it's definitely worth it.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get into a land war with Asia. But only slightly less well known is this: never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!

Additionally, Black Sabbath is going to be entertaining one way or another. I'm personally a big fan, but I'm also expecting that Ozzy forgets how to speak during Paranoid or something. So it's kind of a win-win scenario: either you get to be incredibly entertained by the sheer amazingness that Ozzy Osbourne is still alive, or maybe they legitimately play well and you can rock out.

I went in 2009 and 2010.  Passed on 2011 because they threw the two acts I wanted to see most (Kid Cudi / Deadmau5) on Sunday night (I have a regular job, so I didn't really want to take off Monday to see a half set of each).

2009 was one of the best life experiences I have ever had.  2010 had a legit heat stroke / panic attack at Lady Gaga, but managed to keep myself upright for the Strokes set.

Overall I would say that lolla is still worth attending, but since they increased capacity in 2010, it has become a worse overall experience (much larger crowds = shittier views of each stage and much more difficult to walk from stage to stage).  If you haven't been, go.

[Edit - black keys performed in 2010 (sub-headliner.. came on around 7 PM friday) and they were an AMAZING show.  I knew of them at the time, but became a much bigger fan after seeing their show.  They will absolutely be worth the price of admission this year.]
