OT: Lions Sign WR Golden Tate

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on
A very solid signing by Detroit. The Lions need consistency next to Calvin, and Tate has only dropped 7 passes his entire career.

@ttwentyman: Golden Tate just agreed to a 5-year deal with the #Lions. Edit: 5 year, 31 million, per Josina Anderson.

I dont know where everyone thinks we need a lb?   We have 2 signed for good money and Tulloch is top 10 mlb and levy played like a pro bowler last year.    Plus u only have 3 lbs on the field like 30% of the time.   So unless mack falls to 10 lb is the lions moststacked position.  I would like shazier cause he runs as fast as CBS and would never come off the field.   U need only 2 stud lbs in a 4 3 scheme.   If there's no injuries.    I say lions take Watkins if they can if not mike Evans or Erbon.   An ideal draft would be to trade back and get more picks.   Deep deep draft.

When you can get a quality rookie OT on this salary scale...you do it! Especially when the CB depth is better in the late 1st/early 2nd

Lewan or Jake Matthews in Round 1

CB like Roby, Dennard or Fuller in Round 2

A Safety like Lamarcus Joyner or Ahmad Dixon in Round 3

The Iowa TE CJ Fiedorowicz in Round 5

An ILB...maybe Bullough in Round 6

A C to take over for Raiola, like Gabe Ikard from Oklahoma in Round 7

A QB that you don't want to risk losing as an uFA, like James Franklng of Mizzou in Round 7

Name one team that has kept both of it's tackles for an extended period of time.

This is the time of thinking that is the reason the Lions have been medicore. Look at how SF and Seattle have built their teams. You have to draft young talent at key positions and build depth.

Look at how the Lions built their DL that has been one of the best over the past 3-4 years. You have to do that with every position. That way when guys leave as FA you're not starting back over, scrambling to spend a ton of money on another FA or relying on a potential rookie.

This mentality that you get things just good enough and then avoid it has to stop. Just because you have Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate doesn't mean you avoid the WR position for the next 10 years.

Does anybody expect me to root for Golden Tate?  Perhaps so, if I were a fan of the Detroit NFL franchise.  Fortunately I am not.

I remember the years when the Pistons featured Kelly Tripucka, Bill Laimbeer and Adrian Dantley.  All I saw, was a bunch of guys from Notre Dame and later IU (Isaiah Thomas).

Far easier, just to regard professional football and basketball as exoplanets; to be observed from afar without any real connection.

I'm actually with Section 1 on this one. I'm never going to root for a domer in the NFL, even if he's on my team. The Lions picking up players I cheered against in college is only going to make me more indifferent toward them. Most Lions fans likely have less of a college fball affinity than I do, or have a different one. But I will be cheering for Tate to drop the ball or get rocked every time he gets thrown to.

I'm not a fake Lions fan, or a wannabe Lions fan.  I'm not a fairweather Lions fan, or a heartbroken Lions fan.  I'm not a good Lions fan, or a loyal Lions fan.

I am a Michigan fan (alum) who doesn't even pretend to be a Lions fan.

And it's "your" not "you're."  I would expect Michigan grads, and not Lions fans, to know that.

If Gilbert is gone by the time they pick then i agree. Should be able to get a solid safety in the second round. Don't need a stud #2 receiver if you have Tate and Ebron. Should be an upgrade over Pettigrew. And maybe Broyles has something left in his retooled legs to be effective.

Am I the only one who thinks this wasn't that impressive of a move? If this takes the place of potentially trading up for Watkins or drafting Mike Evans, I think it's a mistake. He's 5'10 and played on the best team in the NFL. We need a bigger target opposite Calvin.
