Yes, I believe that Hill is probably the best backup QB in the league, but I think Moore will be pretty solid. I think we should AT LEAST shop Hill and see if we can get a good CB for him. If we can't, then keep him. However, if we can, I'd say to go for it. We can always sign a 3rd string QB for little to nothing and let Moore battle it out with some vet he could learn from.

I can't believe some of you guys, Stafford has only played 1 full season of healthy football and you want to have the primary backup be a guy who doesn't even know the offense? NFL offenses are alot more complex and i'd like my backups to be in the system a few years to understand the intricacies of Linehan's offense. Kellen Moore in time could be a good backup but no way, not right now. Just look what happened when Jay Cutler went down for proof that you want an experienced backup.

if Stafford goes down, we're fucked anyway. Hill is good, and he could start in some places, but we won't make a legit run with him. Might as well sign some vet 3rd string QB and let him and Moore duke it out for backup. I have a feeling that Moore will be a quick learner and a veteran QB would help him. Also, like I said, we should see what we could get for Hill first off before just giving him away. If we could get a good corner for him, I say do it. Absolutely. So, I'm still going to disagree with you. But you do also make a fair point. My thoughts are just what I would do in this situation. There's no harm in seeing what's out there for a guy like Hill.

Pro offenses are more complicated, but BSU's offense is one of the most complex in the college game.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him pick up the playbook rather quickly.  Also, hopefully Titus Young will help him get up to speed.

I agree that the top end talent of the teams in the major conferences are better, but don't sleep on how good teams like Boise State and TCU are. They do have their fair share of talent. Andy Dalton is doing just fine in the NFL and in my opinion Kellen is just as good. Although, Stafford is much better than either of them so it doesn't really matter.

BSU usually plays three good teams a year and nine tomato cans.  We underrate the middle of the Big Ten, but look at how tough they suddenly appeared when Michigan was stuck playing sophs and freshmen against them.  A Big Ten team usually plays two tomato cans a year in the nonconference portion of the schedule, and maybe one or two others within the conference at the most.

In other words, most Big Ten teams play a schedule that is the opposite of BSU's when it comes to the bona fide team/tomato can ratio.

I just wish Moore had another year at BSU so that Sparty could play the BSU team that was getting to BCS bowls instead of the rebuilding one they will face this fall.  BSU should win seven or eight becuase of the aforementioned tomato cans, but they aren't going to look anything like the team that has caused so much discussion the last four years.

You act as though he passed up playing at Michigan or Alabama to play in the WAC.  He was a three-star recruit that had offers from BSU, Idaho and Eastern Washington.  All he did was go 50-3 as a starter, with wins over Georgia, Oregon (twice), Oregon State, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and quality TCU and Utah teams, despite his well-recognized physical limitations.

The "tomato can" theory doesn't explain why his stats against BCS opponents were often comparable to his stats against non-BCS teams.   Also, he didn't get to pad his stats against tomato cans too much because he rarely played for more than 3 quarters of those games.

There are no guarantees about his future success, but he is one guy that seems to overachieve wherever he goes.  He is like having another coach on the field.

"Not a great athlete and doesn't have a cannon of an arm but he has everything else you want in a quarterback."

I'm sorry - is this a thread about Drew Brees?  Tall with a rocket arm does not also equal NFL success (just ask Jeff George) and being undersized with something less than a cannon doesn't always equate to failure either (or so says Joe Montana).

We aren't looking for Drew Brees out there, or a franchise qb for that matter. We're looking for a guy who can come in, manage a game, and come out with a win if Stafford goes down. With the weapons he'll have if he needs to play, Moore could do that.

Before this UFA signing I would have said the Lions class sucked balls, now not so much.

If Brees arm strength is "above average" please list for me the 17 starting Quarterbacks with arm strength poorer than his.  If he's above average then there has to be more than half worse.

Brees arm strength is below average by NFL terms.  As is Moore's.  It's a matter of degree here IMO.  And I lived in San Fransisco from 83 to 90 (the Niners glory years) - I can tell you that Joe's arm strength was nothing to write home about.  He was just deadly, deadly accurate with nerves of freaking steel.

Watch how he made ridiculous passes between the hashes and opposite hashes.  This is the passes that Moore will struggle to make in the NFL.  He has noodle arm.

If you want below average arm, Chad Pennington is a great example and that's Moore's ceiling.

Burfict gets an invite to the NFL combine in Indy, but he showed up out of shape and ran a 5.09 in the 40.  Here's a link to an ESPN story that might as well be a PR fluff piece about the guy.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/story/_/id/7821147/nfl-asu-linebacker-vontaze-burfict-draft-most-misunderstood-player-espn-magazine

I don't know who his agent is / was, but either Burfict ignored his advice or the guy is an idiot.  An overweight linebacker who can't crack 5.0 in the 40 shouldn't be running the 40 at the combine. Pretend to have a sore thigh or just sit it out.  Before that 40 time came out, no one would have guessed he would be that slow. Also, his reputation is that he's a hothead or dirty player.  Of course every coach interviewing him is going to ask him about it.  His agent should have sat him down and rehearsed answers to a question like that.

I would say to keep Moore as Stafford's backup and see what you can get on the market for Shaun Hill. I think Hill is better than some starting QB's out there and could compete for a starting job. Maybe shop him for a corner or something along those lines. We could always sign a decent 3rd string QB for an inexpensive contract and he and Moore could battle for the backup spot.

He has enough arm strength to play in the NFL. He's one of the most accurate QBs in the 2012 class, second to only Luck. Not ideal height but is only a quarter inch shorter than Brees. At the very least, he can make it as a solid backup. Excited to see him perform in the preseason.
