OT: Lions set to interview Jim Caldwell

Submitted by wresler120 on

Per Adam Schefter the Lions have reached out to Jim Caldwell and are in the process of scheduling an interview with him for their head coaching job.

Jim Caldwell did just fine as a head coach when Peton Manning was at the helm, and then absolutely horrendous when Manning was out. I'm pretty sure Peyton could run his team on his own, and the head coach is just along for the ride. Peyton made Caldwell look good in 2 of his 3 season with Indy. There's a reason Indy cut ties with Caldwell after only 1 bad season.

Caldwell was the offensive coordinator for the Ravens this season, and the Ravens were very subpar from every offensive standpoint under his guidance.

I really hope the Lions do not hire Caldwell.

Due to the extremely condescending "Rooney rule", they have to interview minority candidates. Caldwell HAS to be one of those token candidates. Their is no logical reason they would hire him. Then again, this is the Lions, so they'll probably make him the GM and part owner as well as head coach.

Anyone can win with Urlacher, Tillman, Briggs, etc.

We got some pretty good players too.  Unless we're hiring Bill Belichick, and we're not, pretty much every coach in existence is someone about whom you can say, "he only won because of his players."  Well, the Lions have good players.  So I'm OK with hiring someone who won with good players.

NBC Sports expounds a little on this prospect here - (LINK):

Their contention is that the upside of Caldwell is that he has been with and has worked with some very successful teams, particularly in Indianapolis. The downside, in their argument, would be that Caldwell doesn't have a proven history winning without a Manning or other franchise-type QB. It seems like the question here would development in this case.

All these names coming out are a joke. Obviously won't be easy finding a champion replacement but come on. At least give the hope you are going to do something different for gods sake.

He's helped coach teams to the Super Bowl.  I would think since that's our ultimate goal he'd get at least some sort attention.  Not saying he's the best option, but we have to believe that it takes a winner to win.

There is no way Caldwell is the new coach of the Lions.  As noted, that "Rooney rule" forces this type of dog-and-pony show instead of interviewing deserving candidates of all races.  There are a number of minority candidates who should be receiving interviews, but Caldwell definitely isn't one of them.

What he did in Arizona and has been doing with Phillip Rivers is just what the Lions need.  Lovie Smith was only good in the NFC North when he had a dominating D.  I think he'll be a career .500 coach.

I see things going down this way: Schiano goes to PSU, Lovie Smith goes to Tampa Bay, Whisenhunt to Detroit, not sure who goes to Washington, and the unluckiest of them all ends up in Cleveland.  The Browns have replaced the Lions as the worst job in the NFL.
