OT: Lions set to interview Jim Caldwell
Per Adam Schefter the Lions have reached out to Jim Caldwell and are in the process of scheduling an interview with him for their head coaching job.
Jim Caldwell did just fine as a head coach when Peton Manning was at the helm, and then absolutely horrendous when Manning was out. I'm pretty sure Peyton could run his team on his own, and the head coach is just along for the ride. Peyton made Caldwell look good in 2 of his 3 season with Indy. There's a reason Indy cut ties with Caldwell after only 1 bad season.
Caldwell was the offensive coordinator for the Ravens this season, and the Ravens were very subpar from every offensive standpoint under his guidance.
I really hope the Lions do not hire Caldwell.

But they are also looking to set up an interview with Lovie Smith. I actually think Lovie would be a great hire though.

Anyone can win with Urlacher, Tillman, Briggs, etc. His offenses consistently sucked.

We got some pretty good players too. Unless we're hiring Bill Belichick, and we're not, pretty much every coach in existence is someone about whom you can say, "he only won because of his players." Well, the Lions have good players. So I'm OK with hiring someone who won with good players.

yeah, Lovie Smith has the best resume of any coach available.

From a Bears fan, you don't want Lovie. He's no different than Rex Ryan.
You will have a defense that runs like a ferrari, and an offense that runs like a car on blocks.

NBC Sports expounds a little on this prospect here - (LINK):
Their contention is that the upside of Caldwell is that he has been with and has worked with some very successful teams, particularly in Indianapolis. The downside, in their argument, would be that Caldwell doesn't have a proven history winning without a Manning or other franchise-type QB. It seems like the question here would development in this case.

He was also forced to operate with a 39 year old Kerry Collins who was retired before the season started and Curtis effing Painter in 2011. I don't know if it's really fair to judge someone that harshly based on that. It's not like Stafford is either of those.

Better than Cable. By far.

Not sure why, but I have a gut feeling about Wisenhunt. Is he the next up?

Have to wait til the Chargers are out of the playoffs before we can interview Whisenhunt.

He's helped coach teams to the Super Bowl. I would think since that's our ultimate goal he'd get at least some sort attention. Not saying he's the best option, but we have to believe that it takes a winner to win.

There is no way Caldwell is the new coach of the Lions. As noted, that "Rooney rule" forces this type of dog-and-pony show instead of interviewing deserving candidates of all races. There are a number of minority candidates who should be receiving interviews, but Caldwell definitely isn't one of them.

What he did in Arizona and has been doing with Phillip Rivers is just what the Lions need. Lovie Smith was only good in the NFC North when he had a dominating D. I think he'll be a career .500 coach.
I see things going down this way: Schiano goes to PSU, Lovie Smith goes to Tampa Bay, Whisenhunt to Detroit, not sure who goes to Washington, and the unluckiest of them all ends up in Cleveland. The Browns have replaced the Lions as the worst job in the NFL.
