OK, this other games sucks, so get all your positive Lion talk in now, since not being able to hold a 2nd string QB to under 40 has probably killed any chance of seeing the Lions win their second playoff game in most of our lifetimes. At least I'm not still in New Orleans for it.
OT: Lions-Saints Playoff Game Open Thread
live stream for the game?
Hopefully I get to sing, " Forward down the field" multiple times in front of my Chicago relatives tonight. Regardless of what happens its been a great season, having said that GO LIONS!!!!
Fight songs in professional sports are very akward. It doesn't really help that Lions have an extremely cheesy one.
Having said that, JUST WIN BABY!
but damn, you have some trust in your team. I know, I know Nawlins' and home-field advantage but hell you guys are talented enough to keep up with them.
P.S. Need Lions to win or lose by less than 11 to win my league pick'em :)
I do think NO wins, but I think it'll be closer than many expect. If Detroit can limit the dumb penalties, but still keep their intensity, the game will be close at the 2 minute warning. Whetther that's the 1st half or the 2nd depends on the secondary (I'm looking at you Eric Wright).
Need a huge game from Suh and the Dline to keep Brees uncomfortable. Lions 35 - Saints 27
Go down swingin'
Lions were missing a lot of key contributors in the first meeting. I think this game is going to be very close, and much more competitive.
The lions have this. If they didnt play stupid the first time we would have won
First playoff appearance since 1999. I'm going to enjoy every moment of this, no matter the score. GO LIONS!!!
Just for the lack of black leather.
WE GON' SHOCK THE WORLD!!!
Adrian Arrington active for NO
All that passing spread crap will never work in the NFL.
Just heard that...go lions. But if the saints do score, let it be Arrington.
You know this game means a lot for the city when my mom calls to ask if I'm watching.
I'M FACKING PUMPED!
Adrian Arrington gets the start!
Looks like Arrington's gonna get some shine tonight. I hope he has a good game, but not too good of one.
Let's just do that all night.
Keeping that in the mix will keep the defense in check.
MEGATRON! Loving the execution.
Come on. Can't make such stupid mistakes.
First stupid penalty of the game... luckily it doesn't hurt us. Titus Young big on this first drive
Titus Young has swag.
Love what I've seen this year. He's looked like a rookie a couple of times but he definitely has the skills
Great to have an extra option to throw to.
Will Heller! Third TE for the TD!
This first drive is going well!
Titus Young getting a drive to shine here!
...and Heller gets the TD! Great start!
MARCHING DOWN THE FIELD WITH A TEAM THAT WILL BOT YIELD!!!!
That was a huge drive on the road, and in tough environment. We look confident, and that dome is much more quiet now.
Stafford looked like a seasoned vet on that drive.
Great first drive!!! Go Lions!
I am so fricking impressed with Titus Young. He's got major game
would be really nice right now.
I'll take a fumble from Colston
Funny you should mention that...
Fumble it is!
Ugh. I like Darren Sproles. Don't like him running all over us, though.
This all just looks too easy for both teams
There we go baby!
Let's go up two scores!
Stretching the lead to 2 scores would be huge this early.
I love that we are trying to get it to Megatron early
Another touchdown and they'll be punch drunk. Images of Marshawn Lynch in their heads. Lessgo.
Wide open passing spreads? Early turnover? No discernible defense?
How is this different than college?
Ed: Running from under center isn't working too?
Please be a first down
I think the ref ran in crooked there, lol. It helped us.
He looks scary.
Another? Did blogs even exist in 1999?
Regardless, nice to read your posts.
AOL Message Boards and the MSN group boards. That was about it.
Incidentally, awesome special teams tackle by Wendling there. No gain on the return.
Brees was struck by a meteor on the first snap. He's dead.
That camera scored twice against Clemson.
Wait... it just scored again. THREE times against Clemson.
Megatron shoulda had that. Got bumped early
Helluva special teams play.
Have to make that tackle. Had a chance to get them off the field. Looking at you Tulloch.
EDIT: Delmas too
Good to see the defense stepping up...
Not so much....tackling is pitiful
I must have forgotten the /s.
The Saints... they are good
The checkdown looks unstoppable.
Time for a Houston pick six.
Not capitalizing on the turnover is huge. Two score cushion would have been nice.
Detroit's secondary tackles like Michigan's secondary when they played in NOLA.
Not holding my breath.
EDIT. Yup. New ballgame.
Was pretty poor on the second drive. Way too much lame, predictable handoff on 2nd and 10, which is a time when the Lions never get positive yardage.
On that long Megatron drop, they should have called illegal contact beyond five yards.
And, with that touchdown score, it's clear that the Lions are doing a bad job defending the edge.
No one thought it would be easy
Thank you, Tolluch, for allowing that drive.
Lions need to wrap up and quit going for the kill shot. Tackling should be better for an NFL team.
The middle is open. Exploit it all game long.
I thought the dead were walking the earth. It was just William Clay Ford. Sorry. My bad.
It looks like he got a seat in the TGIF's section.
....that's a good way to recover all the yards and more
I do like how they are mixing up the offense and going to different guys nearly every time. It does seem to keep the Saints off balance. The Lions will have to do this a lot and do it effectively for most of the game.
Stafford is throwing with confidence! Looks good so far
Let's hope Borges takes notes when teams are ten yards off quick slants
Wouldn't mind a holding call go against the Saints at some point. I know people complain about this all the time, but the Saints really do seem to tackle defensive players are a higher rate than you'd expect. The goal is to keep the QBs upright, but there have been a couple drives so far where the Saints just maul the linemen.
is pretty good
Can't cover him with a safety
Solid drive and execution.
This is the BCS Bowl Game* we were all expecting.
(*not involving Mattison)
to use the Lions in Madden next year
When the Saints sell out on coverage, they REALLY sell out on coverage.
Just keep dropping eight and leaving most everyone reasonably open, New Orleans. We don't mind.
There's no reason Thomas should have gotten more than 12 yards.
WRAP UP ON THE GOD DAMN TACKLES. STOP HEADBUTTING PEOPLE!
Pierre Thomas is tearin it up. There needs to be a holding called on the Saints at some point
Why do our lbs continually tackle with their helmets and not their arms?
That is a fumble! Arm was not going forward. Not sure how that works with the whistle. It did blow right?
If the Saints don't hold, we should be hitting Brees on every down.
the whistle while the ball was still on the ground
That would have been a td if they didn't blow the whistle. Why'd they blow the whistle again???
I don't get how it was ruled a fumble and yet was still blown dead. Should be 21-7
I'm wondering the same thing. Wtf?
Kill shot. Right now.
Gotta make them pay
They should have kept running!
actually a fumble we just got robbed of a defensive TD by an early whistle
Lions offense is as good as the Saints.
Our defensive front four is better than any of the rest in the league.
We're going to win.
You son of a bitch if you've jinxed this...
"Yep. We saw it as a fumble on the field. Oh, why did we blow the whistle? Because we saw it as an imcomplete pass."
I hate all refs everywhere.*
*Other than the replay official at the Sugar Bowl.
Can't capitalize on that turnover. That was no good. Screwed by an early whistle there. That's huge
lets make them punt now
Not good. Gotta capitalize on opportunities like that against this offense. Can't rely on the refs.
The ref cost us 7 points. Unbelievable how many different ways the Lions can get screwed.
and we did not get a single point.
Got to capitalize!
What's new? The refs suck!!! 21-7
It's frustrating to know it too
My heart dropped into my stomach there. I thought the refs were gonna give the fans that unnecessary roughness call.
the Saints receiver would've had a chance at the tackle had he not stopped playing at the whistle. I was pissed at first too but the replay shows all the Saints players stopped.
Ok, at the very worst. 17-7.
Can't believe the Saints line can't get called for holding or hands to the face ever. That was particularly gratuitous against Corey there.
Sooo many holds by the Saints OL. Also, TACKLE THE FUCKING BALLCARRIER!!
New Orleans is coming up with some crazy catches.
And that was a crap defensive holding call
Would have just contributed to the off-setting penalties there, but it was ridiculous. Held up Fairley and then took out his legs. Textbook 15-yarder that didn't get called.
It was about as obvious as you'll see. Granted, it would have been included in the offsetting fouls. But still, you've gotta at least make the call.
can we stop them on third and short? Where's Mattison when you need him?
Too bad the answer changes on fourth down
I didn't see either of the calls the actually made, and they missed a blatant chop block.
Hold on Suh, no?
HOLDING, refs effing us.
Can we ban every poster who whines about holding? Ultimate loser's play.
Yeah, you could whine about that on almost every play in every game.
Are only showing up when the hold was the reason a play worked at all.
It is if it wasn't so blatant, and wasn't an observation made by non-interested parties about this Saints team all year.
i know holding can be an ambiguous call, but did you see the play?
Because his don't work.
I didn't see anything after the brunette.
Well, other than the made kick.
Avril really needs to stop being a bonehead.
It has to be hard to cover both Graham and Colston in the slot.
Would be a victory.
Good lord. Another challenge we have to waste and then a BS penalty
EDIT: Don't have to waste one because it is scoring play.
apparently seperating the ball is no longer an option
Under two minutes anyway.
It seemed he just touched the head. Not helmet to helmet and not on the QB so how is that unnecessary roughness?
Ball rolled on the ground.
/Prays the Superdome uses the same replay official for NFL games and NCAA bowl games.
Incomplete but what's the penalty? I didn't see a face mask there at all.
I didn't know lightly touching an opponent's helmet was a flag. Is that seriously a rule?
Edit: no sarcasm...
Who thinks that's a catch.
+1000 mgopoints for you
Penalty for the hand hitting the face when both guys are flipping over through the air??? Horse shit
He rubbed his hand on his forehead. No hard contact. Nothing dirty. Ridiculous
That's a bullshit penalty.
and threw a flag for lightly brushing his helmet?
We've turned the League into powderpuff football if that's a penalty.
I try not to complain about referees but that was an awful call.
That if it was going in your favor you'd be raising an eyebrow.
I'm not sure it's a horrible call; it may be to the letter of the rule. The rule may just be ridiculous. It's why so many guys are throwing for 5,000 yards- it's become flag football. I'm all for protecting players and avoiding blows to the helmet and such. I'm not so keen on rules just put in there to make the NFL more like arena football.
Forced the FG. Excellent
Best pass D I've seen from the lions in a while on the past several plays. And that includes that bullshit penalty.
Can't complain aboiut that.
by the back judge
If you would have told me we'd be up 14-10 at half before the game I would have been ecstatic, but I am a lil disappointed that we aren't up by more at this point
The flag was thrown by the ref who was also two feet from the catch on the ball's side and still called it a TD. Can we challenge his entire judgement?
Can't count on forcing turnovers all the time, but a nice half by the Lions. Impressed they were able to keep them out of the endzone on that final drive.
this has been poorly officiated towards the Lions.
NBC. We beat the Broncos. They ARE in the playoffs. Stop with the "lions didn't beat a playoff team" bs please.
I heard the same stat about the Patriots yesterday on ESPN. Noone considers the Broncos a playoff team.
These hooligans have clearly never watched the lions play. CJ has been playing all over the field the entire season.
"The Lions didn't beat a playoff team all year."
Wrong Bob-o, we beat every team in the AFC west....I am guessing one of those teams went to the playoffs.
That was a subconscious jab at the Broncos.
"They didn't beat a playoff team all year. What's that, Denver fans? They beat the Broncos? Well, in that case... Nah, I stand by my comment"
The ESPN radio commentators are busy sucking Brees' dick while trying to dong-punch the Lions. I swear, what happened to just calling the game. I swear the guy on the radio jizzed himself when NO scored.
They basically sound like pinochle but with a ball.
No one gives a crap what you think.
Leggeaux second half! Get Stafford the ball, he's straight swagwaggin this offense up and down the field
And that weight loss center commercial is really fucking disturbing.
Can't win if you don't tackle
Tackle for god sakes
lions D-line is getting held like crazy
Holy hell this tackling is atrocious. We need Mattison to instill a swarming mentality. I've seen so many times where a Saints player is floundering with a guy hanging onto his foot and waving the ball around while the rest of our D just watches. Go take the ball!!
I remember when we were leading this game, and then we let Brees throw to wide open receivers.
On offense this year, and don't take all defensive players, someone should be shot.
....say, Matt Millen, retroactively?
drafting someone who knows how to stop the run/tackle would be nice
We get called for a holding and no facemask?
kidding. Did they touch the receiver helmet or not?
it is completely legal to try and rip someone's neck off, but completely illegal to brush your hand slightly over the logo of the opposing player.
bull shit calls.....
I hate the Saints and how everyone that calls their games are constantly sucking Brees' dick. He's good, but he plays in an offense that calls on him to pass SO many times. Oh, and very surprised we finally got a call on the punt return.
too bad they arn't calling the holding calls on the saints o-line :(
pierre thomas breaks another 4 tackles...
Cant the backers learn to wrap with their arms!
Nice sack! Beat him up!
Where's the fucking hold?!
spot. C'mon REFS!
Wow they gave him a great spot there.
ridiculous spot on that catch
Should have been a hold in the end zone, too!
A 1st down. BS spot.
of officials .....
No kidding. No one in the league wants the Lions to win.
... when the commentators are saying the officiating has been crap.
arm tackles ftw!
Colston was obviously at least a half-yard short of the first down there. But the refs totally blew it.
if Gunther spends the entire offseason saying "wrap-up" over and over again.
holding on the last play too. tremendous officiating
All the things.
what a terrible spot again!!!
Sack the bastard!
Does he get forward progress if he pulls it back himself???
Shouldn't take three attempts to tackle every time...
Tackling?? Refs and tackling (and intercepting) suck!!
My God! Do any of the DBs or LBs ever tackle with their arms? It's absurd how bad their tackling is. All they ever want to do is bump and push.
These Saints must be saints on the field. This game is frustrating right now
If you extend the ball out it doesn't matter if you also pull it back YOURSELF. This isn't the goalline.
Thank you. I am shaking with rage over this right now.
He fumbled the ball, so the spot should be the point of the recovery, which was well short.
Exactly. I was really surprised that it seems like the refs treated it as breaking the plane which is so wrong.
guy with the ball? That's who you're supposed to hit.
this crap happens if they don't give the Saints a first down on their own 20 when they ony got to the 19.
F that drive. This is more home cooking then a basketball game at Indiana
Imagine an o-line allowed to hold all game and never get called....boy...it would be easy to run a great offense if that were possible.
Such an offense might set the all-time single-season passing mark...
If you try....
The officiating is so damn infuriating!
You get screwed on the road in an NFL playoff game.
Hopefully it helps Brady take New England all the way. That is, because we're getting screwed out of this game.
that the Lions will not be allowed to win this game.
the refs will give us some make-up calls, afterall we are the Lions. Oh wait...shit.
we iz screwed
Earn the right to be a "Golden Child" team like the Saints, Pats and GB, they will always get screwed by the refs.
Hey hey... a holding on New Orleans! O wait it doesn't matter? Shucks
I'm one to think that holding is over-called, but the Saints are tackling the line, which is giving Brees all day to throw. Not. One. Call. I hate the NFL - such a front-running league.
The NFL makes it easy for the teams that are already winning and really hard for anyone new. Hell, look at the way things went for the Saints their first playoff year. It was only when it was clear they weren't fluky that they started getting calls.
what a throw. omg
long after Johnson is down will the refs let the Saints pull and grab at him?
Shouldn't the lions be the golden child of the NFL? Detroit is basically New Orleans after Katrina without the natural disaster
When they double cover you and it doesn't matter.
If we don't get a touchdown here, it's pathetic.
Looked in but ugly
overturn that, I will still be glad they overturned the TD in the Sugarbowl
Call into the head of NFL officiating: "What? The lions? Come on Michaels you guys know better than this. Obviously no td. I don't even have to look at it."
not just stands
Getting two possessions on turnovers and no points is going to haunt the way this game is going.
Will haunt us far, far, far, far, far, more.
this is the drive our DB's need to not drop the interception coming their way.
Or capitalize on a holding call
So Stafford is just going to beat the Saints himself? That's how Brees and co. are going to lose, by being out-worked and out-hustled by a hungrier Lions team. Like that.
Need another turnover.
I've broken out a Bell's Third Coast Old Ale for the fourth quarter. We're getting a stop here.
Best Brown Ale ftw
That I smuggled this home to SF in my plane luggage at Christmas. Special bottle.
More damned holding calls missed!
defense to make a play....Let's go!
u do u stafford, u do u
Time to prove that Thomas Morstead is still alive.
Thought we were getting a holding call on the saints for a second. Fool that I am.
But the Lions are playing mostly pretty well, aren't getting any calls or breaks, and well...here I am sitting at the edge of my chair.
And as I say that....FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU another penalty on the defense (and another obvious hold by NO's oline that goes uncalled).
I hate to be that guy, but... shit, man.
Whenever they say "Colston" I hear "Gholston" and get irrationally angry.
or does anyone else have to mute the TV?? I hate announcers...
tackling is why we'll lose.
If we lose, the reason will be because our lbs can't tackle.
But it's our tackling on the next play that gives them the first down. Damn it.
Replace Durant this off season.
k fuck this, feels like i'm watching 2010 Michigan D
we be so bad at tackling?
dude it is a 3 point game, refs have been a factor no doubt
The two are not mutually exclusive. A team can be tackling like a high school JV squad and ALSO be completely screwed over by the zebras.
Exactly. And in fact there are probably more people complaining about the tackling than the refs.
the refs have been downright horrible as well. People have every right to complain about their incompetence or what I suspect is bias in this case. I really am not a big Lion's fan or NFL fan overall, but even I have been agreviated by the officiating.
Wow needed that int badly!
Another 3rd down. So many third downs so many conversions
Come on db's! Just missing golden opportunities
Just a shocking lack of tackling tonight
How in the hell did he not catch that... Lions should be winning this game by 3 tds. Who are the best LB and Safety coming out of the draft this year?
The lions don't normally like to tackle. But when they do, they make sure to not wrap their arms around the ball carrier
And so does fat ass Rex Ryan and his shitty ass team..
