I don't understand the Calvin rule. Does the receiver have to be in possession when the knee (or other part that counts as down) hits the ground even though the ball never does?

Two situations:

1.  The receiver is still in the field of play after coming down with the ball, which then comes loose:  as long as the ball never hit the ground after the receiver goes down, the receiver can regain possession of it and it's still a catch.

2.  The receiver falls out of bounds after catching the ball with two feet down (or one knee or whatevs) and the ball comes loose subsequent to receiver hitting the ground: doesn't matter that the ball never hit the ground, it's incomplete.  You must complete the catch after hitting the ground, not just the moment you hit the ground with possession.

In Calvin's case in this game, it's neither of these.  The ball did hit the ground, even though it was after he went down, so no catch even though he had clear possession when he hit the ground.

I keep harping on it, but can someone please explain why a guy with 1000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards last year has been given 4 touches?

Seriously.

What do the Lions do about Freese?  A drafted kicker, very young, probably just nerves?  But he's been like this for six games, right?

We do need to get another kicker, don't we?  What a wste.

Stafford has played well, but Bell and Freese have really let this team down. Huge mistake by the Lions in keeping Freese after this preseason. He is simply not mentally ready for the NFL.It's going to be a deciding factor in this game.
