OT: Lions get Ronnie Brown from Eagles
The Detroit Lions acquired veteran running back Ronnie Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles before the 3 p.m. trade deadline for running back Jerome Harrison and a seventh-round draft pick in 2013, according to multiple reports.
I really like this move. I think that he will be a great complement to Jahvid Best in our running game, especially considering the recent head injuries Best has sustained.

It's good to see them being active in bringing a proven solid running back.

It's great to see the Lions have a plan and a front office that is doing its best to put them in a position to succeed.

Not worthy of it's own thread, but TomVH just had a Dunn update. Good or bad? Also, where can one get a super cheap ESPN subscription for WolverineNation?

So who is going to sign Harrison next year in order to trade him to the Eagles at the deadline?
October 18th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
My co worker from Philly came up to me and said "you're not going to believe how dumb my team is" and then went on to say just about what you said. Why get rid of Harrison if you are willing to trade for him.

It's kinda funny that the Lions weakness is Mikel Leshoure's Achilles injury... The 49ers were definitely exploiting that weakness in letting Jahvid Best run between the tackles... Gotta get that run game goin...
October 18th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
Ronnie Brown could be a steal for the Lions.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Long-term does this a) mean the Lions don't have confidence in Leshoure's achilles recovery, b) Detroit won't re-sign or will cut Brown if/when Mikhel is healthy, c) the plan is to have three solid runningbacks in the stable?
October 18th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
Hopefully C.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
The Lion staff believes that it has all the necessary pieces to be a real super bowl contender in place right now. They do need someone who can pound the rock. That is still Lashoure but for this year, they need someone else.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
I think this is a short term move based around fears that Best might be out multiple weeks with his concussion and little belief that Morris, Harrison, or ... whoever the other guy is. The Lions need at least the barest threat of a running game if they hope to continue their start and make the playoffs, especially with the tough schedule at the end of the year.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
I think it's pretty simple, with Best having concussion symptoms they need something more thant Maurice Morris.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:50 PM ^
I don't know the details yet, but I would assume that this is more of a short-term solution because they need to have an up-the-middle back to compete for the rest of the season and in the playoffs. I would assume B or C for next year, but that depends on what the two backs look like.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
As a dolphins fan I can attest that Brown would be perfect for the Lions as a change of pace back, but what about Leshoure when he comes back. He would have filled a similar role and seems more elusive to tackle.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
You have got to wonder how hurt Leshoure is. But I think overall a great move. It's good to see the Lions front office is thinking
October 18th, 2011 at 5:27 PM ^
I think he tore his achillies...which pretty much sums up how hurt he is.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
On a somewhat related note about the Lion's front office finally thinking... Just saw the College Football Live clip of Matt Millen talking about Gholston. Says he shouldn't get suspended because he was just showing a little youthful exuberance and it was part of the flow of the game... Didn't think I could despise that guy more than I already did.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:42 PM ^
Take comfort in the fact that everything Matt Millen has ever said or done was wrong.
October 18th, 2011 at 8:59 PM ^
With his kid eating his own shit.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
Not necessarily about how hurt Leshoure is. The Lions are too one dimensional right now to win big games like we had against SF so they made what looks like a good move to add a new dimension.
If he has a great year they can trade him or they can cut him if he doesn’t perform...
October 18th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Ronnie Brown is a band aid.... Nothing more. Jahvid getting 3 concussions in 2 years is nothing to be happy about. Too much of a load for him this year. LeShoure tearing his achiles really hurt the Lions this year in more than 1 way.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:40 PM ^
Ronnie Brown will definitely be in AA to visit Borges. Borges made him a stud at Auburn.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
But I kinda wanted Peyton Hillis if he could of stayed healthy.
October 18th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
This is a Olandis Gary, Rudi Johnson and Tatum Bell kind of signing to me. You think.. wooo at first then realize the guy doesn't have much left. I wouldn't get your hopes up. I doubt we get a lot out of him. He got 13 carries with the Eagles. Harrison had more yards this year then Brown and Harrison was in-active most weeks.
October 18th, 2011 at 7:21 PM ^
It's a band-aid for now until best gets healthy. They hardly run the ball he has good hands and can catch out of the back field. A change of scenery might do wonders for the guy. He's gotta be healthy I mean damn he's barely played this year. Not a bad move. He has great upside. This trade couldn't have been a smarter move. He excels and does well he pushes and compliments best. Giving him some rest and the chance to be healthy. As we see with Crosby you never know how long a concussion can sideline someone.
October 18th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
the eagles run the ball twice a game.
October 18th, 2011 at 8:28 PM ^
I'm pretty sure the Eagles have the most rushing yds in the NFL.
October 18th, 2011 at 8:45 PM ^
Because LeSean McCoy is a beast and can get 100 off of 10 carries...
October 18th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
And they fall into the middle of the pack (from 170 yards per game to 108).
LeSean McCoy is having a pretty good year, though.
October 19th, 2011 at 8:02 AM ^
so you can't just take his stats out because he also affects the running game in so many ways with rollouts, PA, etc.
It's like saying Michigan's running game is terrible if you take away Denard's stats. That's not how it works.
October 19th, 2011 at 11:54 AM ^
And specifically Ronnie Brown. Michigan may have great running stats, but that doesn't mean we're getting great production out of the backs. In this context it's not unreasonable to point out that their stats are not that impressive without Vick.
As I said before, though, McCoy is still having a pretty good year.
October 19th, 2011 at 12:56 AM ^
If they can get something useful out of him this year, it's a good move. The Lions are contenders now. Whether they're just playoff contenders or something more is still unclear, but in this situation, if you can improve your current roster for a 7th-round pick, you do it.
October 19th, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
But they have LaSean McCoy and Michael Vick ...
In Miami he was fairly successful as the run-up-the-middle member of a running back platoon without a good quarterback or good wide receivers. It's not as though the Lions need him to be a star. They just need him to do a serviceable impression of what they expected from Leshoure. In exchange for a seventh-round pick and a useless running back, he's basically all upside.

would you like to be in a position to not have to take on Suh? On your way? Kewl! (insert swoosh sound of fist pump) I'll have my people call your people.
