OT- Lions Cleaning House on Offensive Side of Ball

Submitted by alum96 on

After 50 years of ineptitude this should do the trick.  Anyhow the circus goes on - only the names change.  #BrownsWest

The Lions are firing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive line coaches Jeremiah Washburn and Terry Heffernan.

I live in NYC now so I get a lot of friends and colleagues wondering why I'm more into college football than pro. I usually just tell them I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and they immediately get it.

Yep until year 5 of the Millen era when I became #LionsFree I always just used to say "well at least we still have Michigan."  Can only imagine the pain of being a Lions AND Michigan fan since 2008.

Anyhow, I sat down to watch last week's game up 17-6 (this from a guy who for 20+ years would clear everything out of the scedule to be sitting on my butt at noon to watch pregame to get ready for 1 PM).  Within an hour it was down 22-17 or something.   And my wry smile and #SOL schtick was in full gear.  Got my hour of entertainment in, knew how it would end, cleared up rest of my day. Makes up for my Saturdays where I am still a slave to TV.

I am pretty insufferable to watch games with now. :)  It's all just a big circus now to me.

I'll watch a good 10 hours of college football on Saturday and not watch any pro football on Sunday. I don't know if it's because I get saturated or if I just don't care that much about pro football. It's still football, but rooting for the Lions for so many years has crushed my spirit. The pro game is just too sterile for me. I can't imagine ESPN showing up to Ford Field to do Pro Gameday. I also like the bands and the traditions that the college game has.

I think having one of the best "franchises" locally over 50 years in college and the worst (or tied with the Browns for worst) helps.

Personally I like the differentiation in college.  Every NFL offense is more or less the same.  Yes I know Chip Kelly but its a copycat league.  Watching Tenn v San Diego is not much different then Washington v Kansas City.  But in college you have a lot of varied systems so it makes it more interesting.  Plus I like the intangibles more i.e. band, cheerleaders, traditions, stadiums, rivalries (some rivalries in NFL too I get it).  There is just more real hate in the Auburn Bama game then say Green Bay Chicago.  And you don't play your rivals twice a year - it's once for a year of bragging rights.  And you can lose 6 games in the NFL and still go to the Super Bowl.  You lose twice in college and you are usually just gone.  So each game means more.

I think that is the 1 culture shock of the East coast kids who come to UM.  It's all about Giants, Jets, Patriots for them - NFL is where it's at because they don't have major college programs growing up like us Midwest kids.  But some assimilate!

He was Peyton's QB Coach for one season.  It's not like he developed the guy.

I am a Lions fan, and certainly wish JB Cooter the best, but can you honestly say Stafford looks like he's made much improvement under Cooter?

Please have fun with that last sentence.

Just the good ole boys,
Never meaning no harm.
Beats y'all never saw,
havin' trouble with their paws
Since the day they was born.
Straightened at the line,
Flattened on their back.
Someday the Arena Bowl might get 'em
but the Super never will.
Makin' their wayyyyyy,
the only way they know how.
Well, they're chewin' off a little bit more
than their abilities allow.
Just the good ole boys,
Wouldn't change if they could.
Fleecing the fans
like a modern day Robin Hood.

Well, can't say anyone is too surprised.  But in the words of the wise Herb Brooks,

The Lions are, "playing worse and worse every day and right now they're playing like it's next month"
