OT: Lions announce premium tunnel seating at Ford Field

Submitted by That's Just Kramer on

The Detroit Lions and the MGM Grand Detroit casino-hotel plan to build an exclusive premium area for fans at Ford Field.

They announced Tuesday that the MGM Grand Detroit Tunnel Club will be located adjacent to the Lions locker room and will accommodate more than 100 fans and guests from MGM Grand Detroit during home games and other stadium events.

As part of the plans, the lower bowl in the west end zone is being extended to include field-level seating for Tunnel Club members. Those in the area, which will include bleacher-style seating, will get a close-up view of Lions player leaving and entering the locker room.

Ideas like this are how Tom Lewand keeps his job, folks. We'll, that and being the son of WCF's long-time lawyer.

That's how he got the job to begin with and was somehow promoted after the Millen fiasco.

From his bio:

Lewand’s fundamental principle is to consistently present the Lions as a first-class organization with a clear sense of mission and direction.

Who knew that blowing a DUI and no remaining players from the 2010- 11 drafts on the roster represented being first-class with a clear sense of direction.

And Mayhew has been a mixed bag. I don't blame them for not firing him, but I'm not calling for his head either. He's infinitely better than Millen, but hasn't been the greatest either.

Honestly, not giving Suh a monsterous deal might turn out to be the best decision he's made. We've got all-pros/borderline all-pros like Levy and Tate on amazing deals.  That trade for Ngata was slick, and Tyrunn Walker is a breakout star waiting to happen.

Judging by how his last few drafts have gone, we might actually be onto something here. I mean, shit, making the playoffs 33.3% of the time as a GM for the Lions is legendary, sadly as that seems.

I wasn't a fan of all the moves he made the last draft day, but overall I was a fan of the first trade, the Tomlinson pick, the Abdullah pick (though not necessarily getting the best value), the Diggs pick, and the Robinson pick. His FA signings were far better IMO.

I honestly think despite losing Suh and Fairley, that the Lions have a chance to be even better on defense than the #2 team they were last year.

Mayhew is responsbile for all of the Lions dead money -- which has either lead the league or been near the top of the league for several years now.

Among his responsibilities, Lewand is the chief player contract negotiator

As the numbers man, he screwed up letting Nick Fairley and Suh go for nothing, then authorized a trade for a DT who was going to be released in a matter of hours.  And Mayhew didn't sign Stafford to the richest contract ever for a QB.  That was Lewand.  They really should update his bio.  The Megatron and Stafford contracts are part of the reason we couldn't match Miami's money for Suh or fill other needs on a roster that has depth issues.

Before looking at the picture, I was wondering who the hell would want to sit in some dark, dank tunnel for 3 hours every Sunday...

After looking at the picture, I still wonder who the hell would want to sit there. Completely removes you from the rest of the stadium experience.

If I wanted Matt Stafford to walk by me, all I would do is post up at Old Country Buffet and wait.

Only you pay us." Being closer to ground level does nothing but make the game more difficult to see. If the play isn't right in front of you, you just end up watching the scoreboard/TV. I'd rather sit in the nosebleed section.

I guess that is more of a thrill and enjoyable than watching the Lions play on the field.

So, since you're paying for this experience potentially, do they throw in - free of charge, mind you - some dude trying to sell timeshares, doing his best to convince you that your equity will go through the roof? I mean, if you want my money, just say so.

I've had an idea for years that I cant believe the Lions havent tried out yet.  Here in Cleveland we have the Dawg Pound where the rowdiest, loudest and most obnoxious fans sit.  During games fans where dog costumes, bark and it's not uncommon for them to throw dog biscuits on the field

The Lions should try something similar and rebrand their endzone seating as "The Litter Box" and encourage fans to dress up like cats.  Fans could meow when the opposing team gets close to the endzone, purr after every Lions TD and throw cat toys on the field when things get tough.  I'm telling you "The Litter Box" would instantly become a national thing.

Lyndon Johnson was President, the Pontiac GTO had just been introduced and gas was around .20/galIon.  I was five years old & 99% of the board hadnt been born yet the last time a team from Cleveland won a championship so no,  I'm not talking shit to anybody.

If they plan to accommodate 100 they should probably draw more chairs. I especially enjoy the rope barrier between players/fans. That should prevent any mishaps.

Q. What idiot in his right mind gives a fuck about getting "a close-up view of Lions players leaving and entering the locker room?"

A: Only those weirdos hoping to see naked players inside as the players leave and enter.

They'd be money ahead to put a premium product on the field, instead of trying to entice people to pay a premium to see something below average.
