OT: Lil Wayne Concert

Submitted by chris1709 on

it was an awsome concert and I saw morris and morgan there. Also I saw Draymond Green, im not sure if they were all together. All of young money was there, Rick Ross, Travis Barker, and Birdman were some of the big name guests, and of course nicki minaj.

You get a standing ovation for the post. And if I were your advisor, I'd tell you to hunt down those that negged you and have your son Hannibal take care of their rude behavior! :P

I hate ranking MC's because they all have a different voice and are ultimately incomparable, but for the sake of argument. All Time MCs 1. GZA 2. Doom 3. Kweli 4. KRS 5. Guru 6. Black Thought And many more... More Recent MCs 1. Jay Electonica 2. Aesop 3. C-Rayz 4. Gift of Gab 5. Vast Aire Best Producers: 1.RZA 2. Dre 3. Dilla 4. Muggs 5. Blue Sky Black Death Also, best Detroit right now: Apollo Brown, Bronze Narareth, The Left Of course, just my opinion.

And those are just the ones I like, I like mainstream hip hop, so sue me.  Wayne is probably number 6, might actually be number 5 over BoB now that I think about it.  I'm not too big on more hardcore rap.

You have to take into account that when I posted that this thread was about Lil Wayne, Cudi, Lupe, and BoB.  So the mainstream angle to this thread was already there.

Im not mad at you. If that's what you like that's what you like. That's great. I just get crazy when I see these lists without the greats. Also, there is a huge difference between rap and hip-hop. Some of the artists in your list fall under the rap category and some hip-hop.

So I like mainstream hip hop, I also like Star Wars and Michigan football and other "mainstream garbage".  I've never understood why people hate on stuff because it is mainstream.  Sure a lot of people liking it doesn't make it the best, but if a lot of people like it then there has to be something to it.

And what mainstream artists of the last couple years make this list so terrible?

I wouldn't say there is anything necessarily terrible about mainstream.  In fact, I would say that groups like Wu and Tribe are mainstream, but most mainstream artists, unlike the groups I mentioned, are content not to push the envelope too much, lest they alienate their fans; fans who a want a certain formula because it is familiar - i.e, catchy hooks, bland, recycled concepts and lyrics, and accessible, formulaic beats.  The artists you mentioned seem very much in the Hip Hop politician mold, in that, they stick to a certain formula to ensure votes, and never say or do anything particularly new, which, for me, is neither worth my time or money.  But, good music is relative, and, while I respect the fact that you and other people respect these artists, I can think of 50 or more current hip hop artists that are more skilled and more interesting than the ones you listed.

Like Jeru said 10 years ago, Hip Hop gets kidnapped once in a while, and it takes real MC's to go and retrieve it. Lil Wayne, amongst others, better be on the lookout. There are some artists coming up with real talent and insight.

I agree. Most of the mainstream stuff is really just a copy of a copy of a copy, which is fine because that is what it usually takes to make money, but, unfortunately, the highly marketed stuff these days tend to be very poor copies that use the same stupid formula that garbage MCs used in '96, but at least in '96 people knew those MCs were weak because they didn't dress it up with auto-tune and formulaic hooks from the same 3 R&B singers. But, eventually, cats like Lil Wayne will fade from Hip Hop history because they really didn't do anything to better the art, and instead treaded water.

Yes, I was waiting for someone to go there. Childish Gambino has been impressing the hell out of me lately. Also, in that vein, I would recommend Das Racist. And where's the love for Dilla, Outkast, Wu-Tang (all iterations), and MF Doom? Or more old school types like NWA and Biz Markie (probably the funniest man in hip hop history).

Hip-Hop was dead a LONG time ago. When Biggie, Pac, Big L, Pun, Easy, Guru, and ODB died, when Cube, Rakim, Quik, Tribe Called Quest, Nas, KRS One started to call it quits that's when rap was done. I respect Lupe because he actually raps about real stuff, but I'm tired of Lil' Wayne talking about how he has to go to the bathroom all the time, or how he needs to mention that life is a bitch because he says it in every song. Old School Rap will forever be better than what is being made today.
