Go Blue Beat Ohio
OT: Let's go Hoosiers?
MSU has to play at OSU. That's the toughest game on either team's schedule if you put aside tonight's game and the teams' two games against Michigan.
Don't see IU losing at home to OSU after they killed them on the road.
Likelihood of IU losing at both Minnesota and Michigan < Likelihood of MSU losing at both OSU and Michigan (or home vs. Wisco).
Therefore, we "want" MSU to win.
We may "need" msu to win (for a B1G Title) but do we "want" them to win?
Yea but all my staee friends facebook have been talking shit all day. Gota pull for the hooisers. IU could easily still loose two more if they win tonight.
Five spelling errors in three sentences, I'm not even mad. That's impressive, even if one was intentional (which is becoming way overused and is now stale (which is sad)).
Root for State therfore, Go Hoosiers.
you can't root for an outcome that would make Michigans B1G title hopes much more likely?
If it came down to Sparty having to win for MIchigan to win the BT championship, I would cheer for them. Sadly, the basketball gods pretty much took away Michigan's chances when they guided the last-ditch Wiscy heave through the net. That means I don't have to root for Sparty.
Besides, the real championship comes in a few weeks, and it takes six consecutive wins.
roughhouse match. IU could lose their composure and go down flat in a close one or MSU could stumble and lose by 12.
Need MSU to win. Root for Indiana to lose.
Whatever is best for us. This is Michigan FERGODSAKES
...the Hoosiers beating up lil brother. Like OSU...can't wait to get State and IU back in Ann Arbor!
MSU will blow them out if Oladipo isn't 100% and the atmosphere is anything like it was for our game.
I think I would feel better about rooting for state only if I was ensured we would finish with only 4 losses and thus stay in the hunt and that state in this case would pick up a 4th loss. I would feel pretty shitty if I rooted for them and then they didn't pick up a 4th loss and they won the big 10 outright.
I'll never root for MSU. Ever. Go Hoosiers.
You wouldn't root for msu over ohio?
Well that's a little odd but okay. I think most people on here would disagree with that.
never root for osu over msu. Basketball is a bit of a different animal. In this blogger's opinion anyway.
Not me. I'm not rooting for ohio in anything even against msu unless it helps us.
I root for the meteor in that scenario.
Not going to root for State unless it's imperative that they must win for our BT title. I think State can lose tonight and we can still get the title. Indiana doesn't play well on the road and could drop one at Minnesota.
I'm pretty sure we'd be able to put the "Indiana can't play on the road" shit away if they manage to win @MSU with what they did @OSU.
I can see both teams losing to OSU and Michigan back-to-back. Sparty could also lose to Wisconsin, so in theory I do hope they beat Indiana tonight.
Barring an unforeseen collapse, if IU wins they will probably win the conference outright.
MSU has a tougher schedule, so the odds are better of them losing down the stretch and giving us a shot at a B1G title.
IU: at MSU, at Minny, Iowa, OSU, at UM
MSU: IU, at OSU, at UM, WISC, NW
best case scenario is that by force of magic, izzo and crean switch haircuts.
UGhhhh....gonna be wanting Sparty to win tonight. I won't be cheering or rooting but I have to say my interest lies in Sparty getting the win, moreso, Indiana getting a Loss.
One interesting note is that Michigan State is a one or two point favorite on most lines, and Massey and other predictive sites actually are predicting more or less a statistical tossup in this game, which I could believe.
In any case, Indiana is 23-3 right now, and looking at Massey, predicted to go 3-2 the rest of the way. Michigan is at 22-4 and predicted to go 4-1 in the remainder of the schedule. Based on the numbers, we have the easier road to such a record, whereas Indiana still has to go to Minnesota as well as come to Crisler. From the standpoint of still having a significant chance of at least sharing the conference title, looking at predictions for remaining games, Indiana definitely has to tank tonight or otherwise be inexplicably upset somewhere else.
Offensively, looking at comparisons, Indiana has no reason to lose, but then I look at a Big Ten that is collectively 0.417 on the road this year and realize that stranger things have happened.
I believe it was Brian that tweeted this earlier:
If IU wins today Michigan has a 44% chance of winning the B1G as opposed to a 76% chance if MSU wins
So root for math?
Got to root for MSU, but very unenthusiastically. I do think MSU wins this game though from an unbiased perspective. They probably should have won at Bloomington and they are playing great right now. Not to mention they do not lose at home very often, and are undefeated there this year.
I only care about getting a #1 seed in the tourney. Sparty losing would get us close to that since Indiana pretty much has locked up a #1 seed.
Have you seen Indianas schedule? Yes, they are in good position but they have a lot of work left to do. Their schedule is backloaded as much as ours was frontloaded.
Stop comparing basketball to football everyone. They are completely different.
Reminds me how much that Wisconsin loss hurts.
I hate games like this, where the circumstances down the road have to take first priority over just rooting against a team you hate. Indiana screwed everything up by winning in Columbus, which I'm still shocked they were able to win so easily. Should be an entertaining game regardless.
The Hoosiers are winless all time at Breslin, though.
Not really worried about it. Don't think we can beat both sparty and Indiana with the way we have been playing.
or @ Purdue.
You people really don't know basketball, huh? The last time a team went undefeated was 1976. This isn't college football. Teams lose. We're 22-4. Christ
Normally I have no problem in rooting for whatever team would best help Michigan.
I'm struggling right now......I should pull for State....
Here's the breakdown:
We are two games back from Indiana and MSU. Assuming that we win out, that means that we are one game back. The winner tonight will still be a game up and a the loser will be tied with us. Therefore, we need the winner to lose an additional game.
If Indiana wins and then loses an additional game, and then all of the teams win out, we will be tied at 4 losses in conference. The tiebreaker would be record against teams in the tie. Indiana wins the tie breaker at 3-1. Therefore, we would need one of the two teams tied to incur an additional loss. If MSU is that team, then Indiana has the better record against MSU and takes beats us in that tiebreaker, so we really need Indiana to lose an additional game.
If MSU wins and loses another game, all of the teams are tied and have even records against each other. It then goes to record against the next best team, which would be Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat Michigan and Indiana, so MSU would win this tiebreaker. Therefore, we would need MSU to lose an additional game.
Basically, we need the winner of this game to lose two more games beyond losing to us. The schedules to finish the season are relatively, so I don't think it really matters. With Oladipo injured, that is probably our best bet for two additional losses.
Long story short, root for Indiana because either way, the circumstances to #1 seed in the tournament are the same.
1. MSU will win 2.Most of us will hit mute button.Dicky V AND Magic,no thanks 3. Those of us who "root' for MSU will feel so dirty a post game shower will be required
the B1G, so go Hoosiers!
I know we "want" MSU to win, but if they lost it wouldn't upset me too much either
Guy to The left of Magic during the award presentation?
Interesting that Indiana is using watford on nix and keeping zeller on Payne...perhaps to avoid zeller picking up fouls on nix's post touches.
I know it would be better for us for state to win but I would love to see izzo get throttled at home.
MSU typically rises to the occasion. IU is more talented. Guessing at what will happen in the future is tough. I am just going to enjoy two of the best teams going at it
Referencing a plug for a Wednesday night NBA game on ESPN.
Dang, Oladipo. I hope our boys are watching this and taking copious notes.
Most big games have a guy who has nothing but tough/bad calls against him. Today's winner is Will Sheehy. Two terrible calls.
Remember that uconn game, doesn't even look like the same team.
I think MSU has a better chance of losing a game (other than Michigan) than IU. But, IU lost to Illinois. I can lose again too. I think the hardest part will be Michigan sweeping.
our self interests. We need Indiana to lose this game.
MSU will lose others. This will set both of them up to be beaten down at the Crisler Center.
Nice to see MSU blow their stream against UM and struggle against everyone else.
I don't think they win @ Minnesota. That's a tough place to play and the Gophers will be desperate. If we can beat MSU, we're likely playing IU to end the season for a shot at a two-way or three-way tie for the conference.
Man refs are starting to take control.
EDIT: Refs are REALLY starting to take control.
MSU Remaining Schedule
at #18 Ohio State
Breslin Center • East Lansing, MI
Breslin Center • East Lansing, MI
Indiana Remaining Schedule
Assembly Hall • Bloomington, IN
Assembly Hall • Bloomington, IN
Indiana has the easier schedule down the stretch. I don't see them losing at Minnesota or at home against Ohio. We need Indiana to lose this game
Sounds like he is squeezing out a big dump.
Dang totally agree with dickie on that one. Game needs 6 fouls and full time officials.
Halftime will feature highlites of Magic's Middle School career
Halftime will feature highlites of Magic's Middle School career
To both of your posts
MSU hoops or the Lakers then you don't have to worry about Magic overload.
The only news I have heard of Magic recently is he a huge investor in Starbucks.
Also, I hear a side effect from weed is short-term memory loss, but I don't believe it.
That kid will be running laps in practice.
The B1G can snag two #1 seeds in the tournament. IU is almost guaranteed one, so we need MSU to lose this one to better our chances at the second #1 seed.
Haha, vitale just confused Gary and drake Harris. Apparently Gary has a bright future as a we.
Wr, not we.
36-30 Indiana at the half.
runs like a fat broad
That's because Nix is a fat broad.
Boobs. Nix just waddles up and down the floor.
Full of pizza-bellied brahs.
I will be rooting for both to lose. That being said I would much rather see Indiana win the title outright than MSU. Just too many games left to predict what will happen after last year's crazy finish.
On an unrelated note - does anybody have any info on buying the 1968 Addidas Throwback jerseys from Sunday's game? I would kill for a pair of shorts but called the MDen and they have no info on availability yet. Seems strange after they whored out the football retros/alternates.
Sorry didn't have enough points to start a thread, but if anyone has info on availability of those or can start a thread for me, that would be much appreciated.
for Michigan to win and repeat as champions.
That is still a real possibility.
If so, I have a car ready for that plate.
Payne just flopped soooo hard
I take it back
I assume you know thats a replay right? I'm assuming its sarcasm.
Wow. Horrible call against Payne, and then even worse with reversing it and calling a flagrant. That's awful.
MSU got screwed at IU and now at home LOL.
EDIT: Nvm they corrected the call. I don't think you can honestly try to say he didn't get elbowed in the nose...
To call a flagrant tech there is absurd.
That's a foul, but not flagrant.
State winning is more beneficial to our title hopes than Indiana, if IU wins we are pretty much counting on Minnesota to beat IU (haha) for a chance for us to share the title.
Dick vitale argued that exact same call should not be a flagrant when craft hit Gr3 but now thinks it is a flagrant? What?
Magic's mom and dad's house
There are so few things I hate more than Michigan state, and the list grows shorter every time they show the crowd.
Classic Teddy Valentine.
Foul, take a step, pause for a full second...
F it, continuation.
One hell of a good game. Remind me again why we can't play like this on the road again? Those scary MSU fans dont seem to be bothering Indiana much.
Because we rely on 60% contribution from true freshmen, that comes with experience.
Is the most complete player I have ever seen? Dumbest comment ever?
He can't dribble, can't shoot the three, can't play one on one d. Yeah...real complete.
He's not even the most complete player on his own team haha.
Valentine? Lol, can't believe he counted that!
This is a really, really good frickin' game.
Yeah, it really is. Got me itching for March.
I know it would help is more for Indiana to lose but I can't stand little brother!
I'll tell ya what. I'll tell ya what. Dickie V reminds me of Johnny Two Times from Goodfellas!
Know you Goodfellas son.
My bad. My bad.
"Oladipo is a combination of Jordan and Wade" - Magic Johnson
I wasn't aware Magic was friends with Fred Jackson.
I don't understand how Payne is so accurate from 3 point range.
Good Lord I know. How is it even possible?! He really is making himself into am NBA player by developing that shot, though (especially with another year of college ball under his belt).
Keep slapping the floor. Then allow your guy to blow past you. 3rd time tonight that's happened.
Just thinkin the same thing.
What is with that, anyway?
I still don't trust the sample size to say he's this good at 3's. but I've never seen anything like this with a guy starting to bomb away midseason
Indiana was expected to win it.
a little better than us, I'm afraid to say. A lot of our talent is just a little raw. I've lowered my expectations, but am interested to see how much we grow through the end of the year now.
I hate to agree with you but I do. Both of these teams look better than us. Playing both at Crisler will be nail biters.
Brian's got new data point for his Payne 3 pt quest. Ridiculous. These two teams definitely are the two best in the B1G.
Everyone annointing msu as the big ten needs to remember how good we looked on neutral courts. All our big games have been on the road without our best defender.
At home by 30, I'll revisit my opinion. Until then, anyone who tries to argue we are better than them in the face of a head to head beat down looks like an idiot
To go along with that, MSU only really has 2 good wins away from the Bres, and only one actual good road win. Wisconsin and Kansas are the only 2 games MSU has won away from East Lansing that I would consider good.
Do me a favor and stop blowing sunshine up my ass, because you're clearly not good at it. We've had, like, 3 games on neutral courts.
These refs control this game. What a ticky tack moving screen after all the molesting we've seen tonight.
Wow that 4th foul on Watford was horrid.
Bad shot right there. Bad shot!
Damn that guy is overrated...
Appling has been absolutely terrible. 1-6, 2-4 FT, 0 assists and 2 TOs.
Watford has had a second half to forget.
Nix, but damn is he good
He averages 9.5 ppg. Not exactly an All-American.
Possible to be good and not score lots of points. Especially as a big man in college basketball
That he's going to have to call himself overrated.
Dirty play. T him up.
Best game of the year so far.... I hate to say this: both of these teams are a few notches above us right now...
Derrick Nix with the cheap nut shot. Keep it classy.
Just plain ol dumb...
Nix what an idiot
Stay classy Nix!
Nix is a dick puncher. What a punk bitch.
Haha, what a surprise...
Watch a live feed of blueCE's knee operation.
Omfg that's clearly a cheap shot
Nothing called? Ha what a joke.
Derrick Nix is a thug and a goon. Representing the true vandal-Spartan spirit.
Nix is so dirty. Always.
Dong Punch Babyyyy!
Man Watford has really sucked tonight.
A couple times already. I feel the same everytime you post.
I am watching without the sound on, refusing to be caught up in the hype.
Does he get thrown out of the league for that?
Like all at MSU are dickheads!
But like, what would be a flagrant? Has anyone seen it successfully reviewed?
That is a totally gutless call by the refs.
Does Michigan State recruit dirty players or do they turn dirty once they reach East Lansing? Really, I know Michigan players do dumb things, but not nearly as often or with as much malice.
Refs blow another game in favor of staee. Can't believe they call the flagrant against watford but there's "not enough evidence" to call that against Nix. Fergodsakes the one against watford lost them the shooting foul, possession, AND two free throws to state. B1G refs are a joke.
Pickin up that dribble. That's a no no in basketball. Pickin up that dribble.
Watford gets a T on a review for an elbow during a play but Nix gets away with a blatant dong punch while standing around. What has home court advantage come to in the Big Ten?
I think Dantonio found a new lineman though.
Ref calls a blocking foul after the layup is missed. I mean, between that and Nix's dong punch, this is getting absurd.
Refs suck after the last 4 minutes, just start giving fouls to the home team down the strech.
May be good for us
Both of those block calls were very suspect.
Why couldn't those meteorites hit the Breslin center tonight? Fuck me.
Teddy "I'm on TV" Valentine
I was just looking at the bracketology, and I think Minnesota would be a tough 8 seed to play. I don't konw, maybe I'm overrating them, but I wouldn't want that as a 1 seed in the 2nd round.
What a joke. That is a huge insult to Izzo.
Crean just relies on great players to make plays. Nothing wrong with that he's no IZzo.
Magic with a U of M shout out!
I don't understand why people say this. Why doesn't Crean get credit? Because he has good players?
Man, Oladipo's good.
great great game
Spartan bob on the clock now?
MSU win that they couldn't have gotten without copious help from the zebras. There have been some joker-ass calls down the stretch here.
Edit: Maybe Sparty needs a little bit more than copious help. Ah, well.
Pickin up that dribble. That's a no no in basketball. Pickin up that dribble.
Weird....clock issues in East Lansing
Bob is back! This time taking no time off the clock on Sparty's possession.
From MSU football is in charge!
Is that you?
creepy--like staggering drunk creepy.
lol, spartan bob at it again
Spartan Bob returns
What a clown by the refs! Neither clock was running!
dont we need msu to win this game so we can have a better chance of winning B1G title
Both teams have to lose once and we beat them both at home, at the very least, to all have 4 losses in the B1G
Also this: Izzone combined IQ is Payne's jersey number
Seen this movie before. MSU needs clock work 101 implemented now!
How much longer can they keep getting away with this crap? Goddamn cheaters!
Cheaters always cheat!
Clock management issues at State? U don't say. Every time i see Zellers face i want to punch him. #annoyingface
I knew Spartans couldn't spell very well, but now they've proven to me they don't understand the whole "time" idea very well either.
Wow, clocks are hard
Clock didn't start again on the Nix tip.
Spartan Bob strikes again!
Is just an awful place
Is this guy drunk?
has devolved into a joke rather quickly...
I'm surprised Tirico hasn't mentioned him. I guess the clock operator needs to screw up one more time.
Alright this has become a debacle. Every other play is reviewed.
spartan bob at his best
is in the house!
So what happened? Game cast just stopped haha
They need to cut down on timeouts. Tirico with the spartan bob shoutout!
Wow! Clocks not running in East Lansing! Wow what a surprise!!!!! Hey Hoosiers, they're cheatin bastards...ain't that right Tico Duckett!!!
You know who won that football game.
Ooops. Generally a good idea to cover the other team's best player.
Harris fouled him too. That should have been an and-1
Or is Gary Harris the rare MSU player who is good and somewhat likeable?
I guess they should have slapped the floor on the inbounds play.
And that is why JB had McGary at the top of the key against Wisconsin.
Wow he jumped into him!
And... the refs manage to fuck up another Big 10 game. Why can't we get better officials.
needs to go home. complete joke. ball. don't. LIE
Ball don't lie
Ball don't lie.
Is an awful call. Just jumped into him
That was an awful call.
And the Sparty clock operator isn't any better
free throw of his life.
thrown on the court? get ready for the burning party in el!
Sparty don't spell, Sparty don't make free throws. Sparty don't win.
Indiana wins by 4.
Thanks for the update
Buzzer sounds, trash gets tossed onto the floor
Anyone see someone in the crowd throw something at Olidipo when time ran out? What a bunch of farm animals.
You stay classy E.L.
Yes, I did.... bitterness.
Well Indiana will probably win the Big Ten, but if so, they deserve it. They've played some very good basketball.
Deserve it? Maybe so but living 35 miles from Bloomington I'm tired of hearing it!! Iu basketball fans are the most obnoxious bunch of idiots I've ever seen!! Now I get to hear how awesome they are for another 8 hrs at work oh joy!!
I think you could make that argument for close to columbus, east lansing, and southbend. It's not exclusive to IU fans.
Such a douche
I hope Crean never gets fired. I'd hate to hear him announce a basketball game.
Probably just won the B1G championship.
Let's hope they think that at Minnesota.
Jerkoff chucked something at Wateford on the floor after the game, did you see that!
so, what... we need to be better than IU by one game before 3/10 is what it comes down to?
Happy to see Sparty lose but unfortunately, the conference title is now well IU's grasp after this win. They are playing much better than a month ago.
Within MSU's grasp? To be honest, I think it's slipping away from everyone except Indiana.
That's what he just said! *facepalm.
Both teams def played pretty good, if we play as bad as we have lately, we have no chance against them at home sooo JB take some damn notes from this game
I'm fine with this. Watch - Minnesota is going to upset IU. I'm calling it. The IU players are going to get patted on the back all week and they'll take their eyes off the ball, while a desperate Gopher team will come up with an inspired effort.
BTW, if I'm not mistaken, we are the only remaining B1G team to be unbeaten at home.
Well we also haven't played Indiana or Msu at home yet...so that's kind of misleading. Not saying we will lose to them but those are our toughest home games.
My GF was laughing because they played the fight song after the loss. I zone out after any UM loses, do we play the fight song after a loss?
We don't lose at home.
I think most schools do not sure though.
Its too bad that state considers themselves a basketball school because the only sport that they could beat Indiana in this year was football.
Barely too. If IU football had the finishing capability that the MBB team has, Sparty would have a goose egg
Where's the threat? Is it lying in Derrick Nix's weed?
This sucks but it is not surprising. IU is probably the best team in the conference or at the least they are currently. I'm still annoyed that they don't have to play in Madison this year.
We blew it at Wisconsin. Fuck you Ben Brust. Ohio State was also one we easily could have won.
On the bright side of life, MSU is not too likely to win the conference at this point either. If given a choice between Indiana winning the B1G outright or Sparty doing so, I'll take Indiana.
But here is a disgusting thought. What if we lost to Sparty and Sparty beat OSU while IU beat MN. Then...we would come down to the last game of the season where if we beat Indiana then Sparty gets a share of the conference championship but they don't if we lose. God that would be so awful.
Would they get a share since IU swept them? I could look it up but I don't care enough
It's all about the record. Head-to-head only matters for BTT seeding.
Swing on it Sparty! Man I really don like Nix!
is the epitome of Michigan State. What a dirty, lowclass, fat, lazy, big mouthed asshole who thinks he is better than he is. I know IU winning is worse for us but after my kids had to watch those replays, it's worth it.
I hate it when he slaps the floor and talks shit...then barley makes it down the floor. Just shut up an play ball.
Yeah the slapping the floor thing is beyond old at this point. Play ball. You haven't won anything yet.
Dawson: 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 turnovers
Oladipo: 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 1 block, and 1 turnover
That's almost the same.
IU winning the championship > MSU winning it
nix hit him with the tip-master++++ or zeller went to flop city
Don't worry. Izzo has a top secret camera angle that will clear him of wrongdoing.
Well, Nix did want a State highlight shown all night.
And as Derrick Nix would say, "That's pitiful."
That looks like Nix trying to push Zeller off.
Yeah, that's a terrible gif. It shows directly after Nix sacktaps him.
Does anyone else think it kinda looks like Zeller directed the arm into himself? Watch the point of impact carefully.
It actually does. At the end you see Nix look over confused and you can see Zeller has a grip on Nix's wrist in the beginning.
That, and the way the arm of Nix sort of ripples on contact, as if met by an unexpected force.
- cheating with timekeeping, twice
-throwing stuff at opposing team after losing
Do they still burn couches AFTER a loss?? Stay classy E.L.
IU winning may be worse for our Big Ten chances, but may help our chances at a #1 seed. Personally, I'd like to grab a share of the title, but it's a longshot, and I'm not going to be that disappointed if it doesn't happen, given that we ended the drought last year.
My big concern is being one of the top two teams, because the league is likely to get two #1 seeds in the tournament. From that perspective, it's good that MSU (which now has five losses) lost tonight. IU had only three losses overall going into the game, so even with a loss they were probably still in line for a #1 seed, whereas MSU now probably goes down to the 2-line. Hopefully they will lose at OSU as well (and to us, obviously) to take them out of the #1 seed picture altogether.
A common meme on here is that UM fans would have gladly taken a 22-4 record for Michigan before the season started.
But would people still be happy with that record if they knew it would mean Michigan was almost certainly out of the Big Ten title hunt at this point?
Yes, other than the msu game shitshow.
I'll take a 22-4 record anytime. That puts you in line for a possible #1 seed in the tournament. If my alternative is to be, say, 20-6 and in first place, give me the 22-4 record. I would not be surprised if the Big Ten champ ends up no better than 14-4, anyway.
Interestingly, none of our last four Final Four teams (1976, '89, '92, '93) won the Big Ten title. Meanwhile, our last three Big Ten championship teams ('85, '86, '12) all lost in the first weekend of the tournament. Some teams peak too early.
I only ask because people seemed to be so focused on us winning the big ten title. Was that just the football mentality kicking in?
Go blue Beat Ohio.
"East Lansing Fire reports 3 couch fires in the Cedar Village area following MSU's loss. No disturbances reported in the area now."
