OT: Les Miles: Drama queen?

According to Joe Schad:

Joe Schad ‏@schadjoe

Les Miles has pushed back his media availability an hour today

Does Les Miles just like a little drama, or could this Arkansas job be at least sort of real? And what would that mean if we play them in a bowl game? I've always liked his quirkiness, but could he be playing with the media? Or is the media just playing with us?

(Or am I just bored because work is slow today?)

Les wants his off season raise.  If Arkansas can't get it for him, maybe next week we'll see rumors about him being our next OC.  He'd never say no to Michigan.

I can't even imagine the nightmare that Les Miles as OC would be. That and we'd be forced to put real grass down on the field.

I'm not sure about your logic there.  The only way that part of his contract kicks in is if Auburn or Arkansas pays someone more than Les currently makes.  However Les can up his own salary simply by demanding more not to leave.  The $1 thing is a floor, not a ceiling.

I was assuming that he made Nick Saban $$$$ and how they hell would Arkansas justify paying him that.

Maybe ESPN has it out for Miles - they sure do like to report a bunch of stuff regarding him that is untrue.

Say what you will about Les but that dude can work the system for cash.

I am guessing that there is one broadcaster/coach who is very happy about the supposed Miles offer: Jon Gruden.  When desperate AD's, presidents, and NFL GM's are getting into bidding wars for coaches, Chucky wins.  Now, his agent can use $5 million a year as a starting point in negotiations, under the rational that "if Les Miles is worth $5 million, then Jon Gruden is worth $5 million.

I hope the Gruden family at least sends the Miles family a Christmas card this year if Chucky signs with someone like Tennessee.

If Les Miles is missing, it's because he's making a sacrifice to the Cajun voodoo spirit that guides him through his game day decisions.

If AZ had beaten ASU, I could actually envision some Auburn people bringing up RR as a candidate. Trouble is, RR doesn't have a very good record in rivalry games recently.

I really hope RR stays in Tucson for a few years. It's a good spot for him—low expectations and a bunch of programs that he ought to be able to compete with on a regular basis. If he can manage victories against ASU more often than not, they'll love him.

Solid recruiting base too.  He can dip into California and Texas for kids that get overlooked by USC, Texas, OU, and OSU.  AZ produces some okay talent as well. I think Sam Montgomery was from AZ and we've gotten some not so shabby guys from there IIRC.

is probably to go "all in" on Arizona. If he can get the Wildcats to the Rose Bowl and/or have them highly ranked for a few seasons, he'll get another shot at a top tier school. A job like Auburn would be better than Arizona today, but I'd assume that long-term he can find a better gig than an SEC West school playing second fiddle in its own state.

I do like how Joe Alleva (LSU athletic director) put this in the Sporting News write-up -

"“Our intent was to address his contract following this year’s bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little,"

Alleva also mentioned that Les was in line for a raise anyway, noting that he has not received a raise in his $3.75 million salary since 2007. At least we know that he is trying to keep up with inflation, if nothing else.

"Funny isn't it, how naughty dentists always make that one fatal mistake."

Arkansas is a tire fire compared to UM and very difficult recruiting dynamics. Plus, LSU would pummel Ark on the field for years.

Les' crazy stuff is mostly a strategic ploy to keep opponents off-base. He'll stay at LSU.
