OT: Les Miles: Drama queen?

Submitted by Wendyk5 on

According to Joe Schad:

Les Miles has pushed back his media availability an hour today

Does Les Miles just like a little drama, or could this Arkansas job be at least sort of real? And what would that mean if we play them in a bowl game? I've always liked his quirkiness, but could he be playing with the media? Or is the media just playing with us?

(Or am I just bored because work is slow today?)

Les wants his off season raise.  If Arkansas can't get it for him, maybe next week we'll see rumors about him being our next OC.  He'd never say no to Michigan.

I'm not sure about your logic there.  The only way that part of his contract kicks in is if Auburn or Arkansas pays someone more than Les currently makes.  However Les can up his own salary simply by demanding more not to leave.  The $1 thing is a floor, not a ceiling.

I guarantee that Les Miles' agent planted that story with ESPN saying Arkansas offered him an exhorbant amount of money to put pressure on LSU for a raise.  If you were an agent, wouldn't you do that?  It's obviously working because everyone is talking about it.

I was watching Sportscenter last night after the IU / UNC game and they had some CLOWN on discussing the Les Miles "offer".  It sounded like they were making a TON of assumptions and that it was very likely Miles didn't have an offer or had even spoken with Arkansas brass.

Maybe ESPN has it out for Miles - they sure do like to report a bunch of stuff regarding him that is untrue.

I'm sorry but for the mocking we do here Les Miles is my hero.  He has managed to turn rumor and innuendo into yearly raises like no man before him.  I wish I could float a story in my firm every year that company X was about to offer me a BIG, BIG contract and then have my boss panic and bump my salary out of fear of my possible departure.

Say what you will about Les but that dude can work the system for cash.

But dont you see Profit....that's the genus that is Les.  He NEVER does it himself.  Imagine in your scenerio if you or someone else went to the manager and said "Person X just got a very big offer from company Y" and the manager decided to give a raise to stop the move.

Les never does his own dirty work.  That's why he's a genius.

Something tells me that talk like this is exactly what Les and his agent want.  The more publicity this gets, the more pressure LSU gets to give him a raise.

What can you do?

the Hogs are really offering the kind of money rumored, they may have just got themselves a damn strong football coach.  For that kind of money I would not be surprised.

I am guessing that there is one broadcaster/coach who is very happy about the supposed Miles offer: Jon Gruden.  When desperate AD's, presidents, and NFL GM's are getting into bidding wars for coaches, Chucky wins.  Now, his agent can use $5 million a year as a starting point in negotiations, under the rational that "if Les Miles is worth $5 million, then Jon Gruden is worth $5 million.

I hope the Gruden family at least sends the Miles family a Christmas card this year if Chucky signs with someone like Tennessee.

It was a regularly scheduled press conference. He probably moved it back so that he can squash rumors that he's leaving for Our Kansas.

Also, Les Miles is a Michigan Man, not a drama queen.

"Rich Rodriguez to Auburn."  Now if you will please excuse Coach Miles, he has a damn fine football team to coach.

If AZ had beaten ASU, I could actually envision some Auburn people bringing up RR as a candidate. Trouble is, RR doesn't have a very good record in rivalry games recently.

I really hope RR stays in Tucson for a few years. It's a good spot for him—low expectations and a bunch of programs that he ought to be able to compete with on a regular basis. If he can manage victories against ASU more often than not, they'll love him.

is probably to go "all in" on Arizona. If he can get the Wildcats to the Rose Bowl and/or have them highly ranked for a few seasons, he'll get another shot at a top tier school. A job like Auburn would be better than Arizona today, but I'd assume that long-term he can find a better gig than an SEC West school playing second fiddle in its own state.

...Miles turned the Arkansas offer into an LSU extension.

@dennisdoddcbs Just what I thought. Someone was going to profit from Ark offer. LMiles signs extension. Well earned, Lesticles, and well played.

I do like how Joe Alleva (LSU athletic director) put this in the Sporting News write-up -

"“Our intent was to address his contract following this year’s bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little,"

Alleva also mentioned that Les was in line for a raise anyway, noting that he has not received a raise in his $3.75 million salary since 2007. At least we know that he is trying to keep up with inflation, if nothing else.

Arkansas is a tire fire compared to UM and very difficult recruiting dynamics. Plus, LSU would pummel Ark on the field for years. Les' crazy stuff is mostly a strategic ploy to keep opponents off-base. He'll stay at LSU.
