Treating the double n as one m, we get:

L-U-K-K-E-M-E-Y-A-A

Hang on folks, we're about to find out who killed Kennedy.

as if teo wasn't a big enough liar already

he kept lying in the lead up to the NC game in order to cover up his previous lies. considering that ND had stepped in at that point, it's reasonable to specualate that ND ordered the cover up not to cause a distraction before the NC game. from the school that refused to properly investigate rape by football players, this is truly disgusting.

Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right?

How do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.

Sorry

Everyone I'm sorry the post from before was very douchey. I'm sorry I said it but in my defense I just had a pretty serious knee surgery yesterday that essentially ended my collegiate lacrosse career and everything has been setting me off lately. I really am not that big of a douche in person.

Sorry to hear that.

I'm also on pain meds for knee surgery, although yours is definitely worse than mine. Keep your head up, this place can be great for distracting/providing some kind of support network at times.

Also, you'll probably never convince DreisbachTurnerOverdrive that anything UConn is good. Take a look at his avatar and you'll get where his first reply to you was coming from.

That means a lot to me. I didnt realize he was a Syracuse guy, that makes sense now. I tore my ACL MCL PCL and meniscus with it being the second time I tore my ACL in the same knee. This board means a lot to me because I would more than half of my  time on the internet is spent reading mgoblog and following michigan football recruiting, I'm here everyday. I've been an avid reader for over five years but only recently created an account.

Hang in there man.  I did the same thing when I was a youngin'  back in '02.  I was a Junior in college and quit the lacrosse team after the surgery.  It killed me.  All I can recommend is to stay active with extracurricular activities.  I just partied and feel like I lost out on some good "memorable" times.

Ok something I just thought

Ok something I just thought of....

I was thinking Te'o was in on it.

BUT...  If he was, why would he even go to Swarbrick about the phone call?  Swarbrick didn't call Te'o in, Te'o approached him.

At that point the hoax had been a success....  If Te'o was in on it, what's the play, by going to Swarbrick at that point?  If Te'o was in on it, he had absolutely nothing to gain by going to Swarbrick....

Unless... Either Te'o caught wind of the Deadpsin story developing (I don't know how) and went to Swarbrick as pre-emptive cover, or, Swarbrick caught wind of the deadspin story and called Te'o in and changed the narrative in the press conference saying that Te'o came to him.

One thing I do know is either way, Te'o comes out of this looking awful.  He is either immensely,  immensely naive, or a manipulator of sociopathic proportions.  And if there was a cover-up and he was in on it, who else knew?  His family?  Kelly?  Swarbrick?  If any/all of them caught wind of what was going on, they certainly have motive to participate in a cover up.

This whole thing is just so mind-blowing.  So much to think about and I'm a sucker for a good mystery.

In any case, there's a special edition of Catfish in Te'o's future, since he either got Catfished or IS a Catfish.

I'm guessing that Teo and his friend made the girlfriend up to appease his family for some reason, and as the family started asking questions, they developed more and more elaborate ruses to satisfy the parents' inquiries, the whole thing started spinning out of control, so they made the dumb move of having her die, in an attempt to get out of the lie without consequences, but someone in the family talked to reporters about the relationship and death, making the whole thing public.  An elaborate lie to appease a nosy parent that spun out of control makes a lot more sense than almost anything else.  But of course if that is true, he's lying through his teeth right now and ND is covering its ass by not really investigating and just being happy with a Teo lie because its the most convenient for them.

I don't know...

for me this just isn't that big a deal...At worst the kud lied and at best he got duped. L just don't see the big deal, nor do I see why people on this site are getting so outraged by it. if he was a UM player I may be more concerned, but to me, either scenario just doesn't get me too upset. The fact is some people choose to lie for reasons that rarelymake any sense to me. Also, lots of people who I would bet are far smarter than Manti T'eo have fallen victim to internet scams of one form or other. Both of these seem at least possible and neither one fills me with any outrage whatsoever. If it wad a UM player I'd feel bad for them but as it isn't...I'm pretty ambivalent about the whole situation.

Not believable......

Two years and you haven't met?  Either she's really a man or some obese woman pretending to be a model.  How do you "date" someone for 2 years, but never meet???

If you have gone two years without seeing this "amazing" model in person, I have to believe that you're one ugly dude who is desparate to have someone "beautiful", even if you never actually get to see her in person to touch her, hug her, kiss her..

Something really fishy about that.

According to Deadspin they

According to Deadspin they MET at a Stanford football game. He even said in an interview on ESPN recently that she was "the most beautiful person I'd ever met." This dude is so full of shit I can't even believe he's trying to deny this.

A new theory I'm hearing is that he and Tuiasisopo (sp?) were gay together, which I can honestly see being the case. But I really think it started as a little white lie and escalated into something he couldn't control, so he decided to just keep going with it because he wanted some Heisman pub. Te'o is now my absolute least favorite player and I hope that jackass goes undrafted (un-possible, but I can dream). He's still gonna lose a shit ton of money either way.

I'll take hopelessly naive for about

two dollars and thirty cents, or hope for his sake that that's the case. I'd say it's all pretty entertaining and no one got killed, or at least we think so.

EDIT: Actually, if the subtext is that he's gay and made the whole thing up as some kind of elaborate dodge then. . . tragic; I take back my comment. Hope if that is the case and no one has really suffered everyone can move on quickly. The kid is going to carry this one for the rest of his life.

The whole thing seems lame and creepy/stalky and why did Manti go on about it in interviews, makes him seem pretty dumb or dishonest, neither one is a good trait.

He's the supposed leader of a

He's the supposed leader of a National Championship contending football team. When you think of leaders, you don't think: lonely, socially awkward and immature. He soaked up and played the media on this story over and over (he sure wasn't awkward then). He may have been pushed to do so, but that doesn't matter. The "kid" isn't 12--he's an adult who made the decision to either "make up a fake girlfriend's death from leukemia and play the hero in the face of cancer card" or at the very least "let an online relationship escalate in the media to this love story full of embellishments." He could have stopped this many times. He chose not to for either personal gain or due to very poor decision making. It's hard to have a lot of sympathy for him.

Not only is he at a super religious college, but also comes from a super strict religion in regards to homosexuality. Throw in the stigma it sounds like there is in the football world and it adds up pretty quick.

If this is a cover largely for his Mormon parents why did his parents say they had talked to him. That's the only part of this story that gives me pause

At this point I'm split

At this point I'm split between two options.

Manti Te'o is gay, and this was an elborate cover up to explain why the super star ND player wasn't hooking up with any girls or didn't have a girlfriend. Maybe they broke up and it wasn't mutual, so he had to "kill her off" to prevent this Tuiasosopo guy from continuing to contact him on Twitter without drawing attention to himself (seeing as he is also a Mormon and works in the church).

Manti Te'o is the greatest rube of all time. Which, at this point, is seeming more and more plausible. Still, that ND press conference reeked of, "We're making this shit up as we go along, and we have no idea what's really going on but we are backing our guy 100%."

Edit: I also have no idea about ND's "student code of conduct" that people are suddenly bringing up. Is being gay grounds for getting booted out of Notre Dame? I should hope/think not.

Double Edit: I looked it up, and you can totally be gay at ND.

bingo to door #1

Was listening to local radio in DC.  They interviewed a guy who just played at Delaware, who had played with Manti from 7th grade to sophomore year...

Get this:

Manti lived about an hour away from their school.  Manti told everyone he had a girlfriend back home, so no one on that team had ever met her.

Sound familiar?

Only one thing comes to mind....

Manti's gay and is covering it up.

Not that there's anything wrong with it!

If no further "truth" comes

If no further "truth" comes out in media, we can deduce what happened just by his draft position, Since no team is going to touch him without fully investigating him.

If he goes in the first round, he was just a victim - being naïve is not going to bother teams.

If he goes in 2nd or 3rd round, NFL does not believe his story, and they are wary of his character

If he goes any later than that, teams think he is gay and will be worried about what would happen in the locker room.

That would be really sad

If the reason he was drafted in late rounds had to do with him being gay. I'd hope that the second scenario would be a bigger red flag than liking dudes. If so, it makes a lot of sense why he would go to such lengths to hide it

Even weirder is the media response

Most outlets are now peddling the "Manti seems to be duped" party line. Sure, let ND strong arm the media.

If the umpteen original stories prove anything it's simply that Manti is NOT a reliable source. (Manti lied on numerous occasions about meeting and family matters; as did his dad).

They better dig and actually conduct basic journalism to recover a shred of dignity.

Explain something to me

How is it that not one acquaintance, co-worker, roommate, friend, or family member of the girl in the co-opted photographs happened to see her picture all over the news in September?  Wouldn't someone have seen this story and said "uh... that girl ain't named Lennay, she isn't Manti Te'o's girlfriend, and she's definitely not dead"?

At least if MY picture showed up on the news as being romantically linked to a football player, and also dead, I'd kinda hope one of my buds would do me a solid and forward a link with the subject "for your immediate review."

not to throw a damp blanket

on this wonderful ND tire fire but . .

Honestly, how much must it suck to be an ND player right now.
None of these kids signed up for this media shitstorm.

1.  Purple faced screaming douche as a coach.

2.  Screaming douche partly culpable in negligent death of assistant.

3.  Teammate accused of rape, players & admin accused of intimidation/coverup, then victim comits suicide.  Ugly situation regardless of facts.

4.  Humiliating loss in championship after overrated cinderella season.

5.  Purple douche (who is tolerated because of coaching prowes) flirts with NFL.

6.  Inspirational heisman-worthy teammate appears to be a complete fraud.

I love that this happened to the the ND fanbase, and the administration, but I wouldn't wish a fraction of this shit on any 17-21 yr old.

Very true

Every recruit should know that ND has a history of hiring idiots & assholes to be their head coaches. They often leave, or get fired quickly after unrealistic expectations, so you never know who you might be playing for.  Accidents also happen, and sex/crime scandals even crop up every few years at some level.

But THIS?  from your Heisman-hyped teammate?  Straw, meet camel's back.

Most of these players are quality kids who were heavily recruited by Michigan as well.

Why,

they played for a NC (and lost, but it's better than losing in the Outback Bowl). Also, ND has a top 10 recruiting class and doesn't have mass defections, so their players like their coach.

they'll still draft him in 1st round

the story will have calmed down by draft day, and all the facts will be out by then.  he might slip a couple spots, but he'll still go first round.  if Ricky Williams and Randy Moss can go first round, so can Te'o.  Especially if it turns out that the he's covering for being gay theory is the true one, then that will wash away his actions and someone will take him.

I know some Bears fans that are hoping he'll fall to #20 so they can draft him to replace Urlacher.

Hard to say. If I was a GM, I'd still rely on my scouting team's evaluation of him as a player, then I'd use interviews to form my opinion of him as a person. If my scouting team says he's worthy of a first-round pick, I think the only thing that would prevent me from taking him in the first round would be if it turns out that he was involved in the whole ruse. I wouldn't want that sort of dishonesty/deception in my organization. Otherwise, I'd be willing to look past all this in order to bolster my defense.

Definitely agree here.  I

Definitely agree here.

I think this to some extent raises some interesting issues with him... he's either the most naive person in the world (which now everyone knows and consequently he will need even more help managing his transition to being suddenly very wealthy) or he's a sociopathic liar.

If the former, I think a team would still be willing to take him (but if I were the GM I would definitely want him to have a good support network in place so he doesn't fall for anymore crap and bring drama into the lockerroom).  If the latter and it turns out he made this whole thing up, then I wouldn't want him.

I think either way he slips from current projections (around 8) down to 15 or so.

I don't want to give him any excuses because he really did have a bad game and Alabama definitely beat him up... but, in hindsight, do you expect someone to perform at their peak when their whole world is crashing down on them (in terms of either learning he has been a victim of a huge hoax or realizing all his lies are about to come out)?

Really it depends on what the media digs up on the next week or so.  As it stands though, Teo's is trending in the Terrell Owens direction, talented but with baggage that isn't worth the talent.  Plus the NC game dinged the talented part as well a bit.  I'd be inclined to consider other options via the draft or free agency myself.

As others have said, the smart money is on a homosexuality coverup.  It is just ashame that he feels the need to do that.  Be it due to family pressure, religious pressure, or the fact gay is not all that well accepted in the NFL.  If it isn't that, he's either a soulless PR seeking con man or ND is clearly making admissions exceptions to let morons in.

Personally I hope Te'o is coming clean with his friends and family right now and they'll accept him and be willing to help move past the fact he lied to the entire nation.

Also NDNation is hilarious right now, they're all screaming how Te'o was part of a con without pausing to think how bad that makes the school look to have a student fall for such a con.

If he is gay (and that is a big "if"), this entire story can easily be spun to make Manti a sympathetic figure. I don't think anyone would blame him for attempting to cover up this fact about himself given the nature of the sports world, particularly a football locker room (Edit: Not to mention his religion). Everything he has done up to this point would make total sense in light of such a revelation.

And, hey, If he played his cards right he could be the Jackie Robinson of gay athletes, turning this into one of the all time great sports stories.

Yeah, the whole gay thing is conjecture, but it's better than being dumb enough to get duped for 4 years or being a con man.  Gay is the only way he comes out without being scum or the laughing stock.

My other fear is that given the other actor in here was a pastor, this whole thing was some weird pray away the gay thing that got really weird and out of control.

Ironic question

Has the situation deteriorated so badly that, in light of all the other possible explanations, he actually ends up pretending to BE gay because it's the only way that he DOESN'T take a worse hit as far as P.R. goes?

He becomes the Jack Tripper of the NFL ("Three's Company" reference, for anyone born after say, 1975).
