OT: Last Night's Dinner With Tressel
That's too bad you didn't get to really talk to him. I thought you were originally supposed to be sitting at the same table?
What sort of things did Tressel talk about in his speech?
I was suppose to. They told us originally all the winners would be at the head table but then they changed things and had the corporate sponsers sit up front instead. My guess is that there was a LOT of people here in this area who wanted to be there so "money talks" and the guys footing the bill if you will got to sit next to Jim.
He spoke about the importance of teamwork in accomplishing goals, that people need to carry an attitude of gratefullness more often (said it got him through some very tough times) and his father. It seems his dad was quite the track star in his day and ran with the oldest living fastest human (sorry forgot his name) way back in the day. LIke I said, he's actually a pretty decent guy when you meet him in person and is absolutely LOVED here in Ohio.
Tressel always seemed like a really nice and cool guy- someone I'd want to have coach me or my kid. Only problem was the team he coached for!!!
A snake in the grass!
(Attributed to Bo himeself)
Well, only in Ohio and in Happy Valley.
I remember there was an interesting tidbit in Three and Out from Bacon on how friendly Tressel was at Big Ten meetings. But still, the guy was a snake and sketchy when the cameras weren't on him. Cool pick, though, OP. Your facial expression is priceless and I think that's the best you could have done without making a scene by noticeably frowning or something along the lines of that.
Yeah, that and the fact he cheated and lied about it to cover his ass.
That picture would make a great caption contest.
If I hadn't read your last bit about the photo, I would have thought he squeezed your nuts at the last second.
You're right it does. I debated on posting it given how silly I look but I figured what the hell. If you cant post a picture of yourself looking like a complete idiot amoungst friends where can you post it?
Tressel looks like he has something up his sleeve.
Thanks for sharing.
Frankly, I'd be surprised if Tressel responded to your email, but look forward to hearing any response. The only response I can see him saying, is something to the effect of- I think Urban Meyer is doing a fantastic job at tOSU, he has my full support, blah blah blah.
I had all my points taken for putting up the pic of POTUS in a buckeye hat. Your picture is of even a bigger asshat! But anyway, cool story bro!
Just an fyi, from the mod sticky thread:
Bad idea for a thread, dropped the OP to zero for a month for thread starting purposes, put a poster in the negative for calling the president names.
It's the politics thing, not the Buckeye
I was talking about the pres?
I had all my points taken for putting up the pic of POTUS in a buckeye hat
Is there a different POTUS you were referring to as an "asshat?"
Yeah, religious talk is not permitted either...unless of course you are insulting Christians for their beliefs and Christianity in general (the Tebow posts).
beliefs != actions regardless of how much you whine.
I'll take the points hit for this. Any majority whining about persecution or mockery can straight screw off.
if your beliefs are not rooted in evidence, then I'm goona insult you, jesus boy
Your post is evidence you are a chachbag.
nice, I had to google that one.
and at least you're making conclusions based on evidence. Like your point total is evidence that you're bigger chachbag than me.
You proved his point.
A mod will either prove of disporve his point. I'm just providing the test for his hypothesis
Do you find it surprising?
I remember when it was open season here on Catholics.
But when you make fun of a feminist, you cross line.
Typical. Oh so typical.
to be fair, feminism is more respectable than Catholicism
I am pretty sure it says you are only de-pointed for a month. So, why not just be a man, take your punishment, and wait for your points to come back? Besides, while the mods don't have such a rule, surely you have been here long enough to know that one of the most popular of all the unofficial rules here is the following: "Don't complain about mgopoints."
That picture is incredible
Was he drinking wine coolers?
or Apple Ale.
Lloyd Brady in that pic.
I was reading your e-mail and the following thoughts came to mind ...
I’m fascinated that Meyer does NOT seem to be following your lead and is definitely letting us back in.
I'd challenge this premise and say it's not so much Meyer letting us back in as Hoke and staff asserting themselves more effectively.
we are winning recruiting battles head-up and that simply did not happen while you were the Head Coach.
My sense is if Tressel were still coach at OSU we'd see Hoke and staff doing just as well as they are now against Meyer; perhaps better.
One, why do you think Coach Meyer is foregoing your “Ohio first” recruiting mentality and two; do you think he’ll regret it in the long term?
Prediction: if Tressel chooses to respond (which he probably won't), he would deny Meyer is foregoing "Ohio First." That would be seen as criticizing Meyer, and I can't see Tressel doing that.
Was he wearing Uggs?
It would be amazing if Tressel responded back and wasn't supportive of Meyer. That would be a huge deal and probably make it to a national level.
It'll never happen.
Never hurts to try though now does it?
I got to talk to him for about 5-10 minutes last night but we were interrupted literally every 30 seconds or so. What I posted was just a snippet of a much longer email:
"Dear Coach Tressel:
Thank you speaking last night at the Manny Awards. I’ve been to quite a few of these events through the years and your speech was definitely the most entertaining and memorable I can remember. I appreciate you making the time for us and it was nice meeting you in person again.
I am the tall man from Michigan who spoke to you briefly before we entered the hall. While I grew up in Michigan and went to school there I have lived in Northern Ohio since 1987. I met you many years ago at the Northern Ohio high school academic All-American banquet held at Landerhaven when Lloyd Carr was the keynote speaker. If memory serves that evening was one of your first “official” events as the coach of the Buckeyes and you attended it directly after flying back from the Big 10 coaches meeting in Orlando. You and I were both sneaking out early during the film at the end of the evening (you to take your mom home and me to take my son home) and we spoke for several minutes when the two of them decided they needed to use the restroom at the same time. I’m sure you don’t remember that evening but I do as I recruited for Michigan here in northern Ohio for several years in the early to mid 90’s under Bob Chemiel and I was struck by how differently you treated me than my personal experiences with John Cooper. You were friendly and nice to me even though I was wearing a Michigan polo shirt (and made a smart aleck comment) when I’m sure all you wanted to do was get your mom home and begin the drive back to Columbus. Thank you for your kindness and your time.
If you’re still reading this email I do have one football question I wanted to ask you last night but time and opportunity obviously did not permit. During your tenure at OSU you definitely created “fortress Ohio” and made recruiting nearly impossible for Michigan. As you well know, if you wanted an Ohio kid you got him. And my Alma Mater absolutely HAS to recruit successfully in Ohio to stay on par with OSU given the relatively poor state of Michigan High School football relative to Ohio. The “zero sum gain” of you keeping all the Ohio kids in Ohio not only strengthen the Buckeyes it weakened Michigan and, while I no longer actively recruit, I’m fascinated that Meyer does NOT seem to be following your lead and is definitely letting us back in. We are not only competitive for the first time since 2000 we are winning recruiting battles head-up and that simply did not happen while you were the Head Coach. Very long preamble to the actual questions. One, why do you think Coach Meyer is foregoing your “Ohio first” recruiting mentality and two; do you think he’ll regret it in the long term?
Once again thanks for your time both last night and now in reading my long-winded email. I really do hope things work out for you so you can coach again if that is your goal – as much as I disliked seeing my team lose to you consistently, I have always respected you and remembered that evening where you gave me and my son a bit of your time way beyond what was expected or even deserved.
If you get a response I would be really surprised if it even goes near what your questions are related to. From his perspective he might be thinking that you would post it publically ... ; ) Great question and it would be interesting to hear his take on it. I met Coach T years ago at a resort in Florida in the off season. Seams like a good guy and was very sociable - he had a job to do (win) and he did a pretty good job at it.
I'd be amazed if he read the whole thing. I don't think a guy as busy as Vestie is going to read some tome starting with "hey do you remember me, I'm that tall guy from Michigan and I really admire you..." type thing.
I basically paid my players to come to my school and created literal (figurative) shit as a coaching tree because let's face it I wasn't a very good coach. But hey, I get paid for talking at big banquet halls now about "leadership" and other shit I don't know anything about. They usually give me free food too which is pretty sweet.
friend of mine has a great framed picture of Desmond doing "the pose" along with another smaller pic of Tressel next to it...he met him, got it signed, and has it on permanent display at his residence. Sometimes occasions like this with a guy like Tressel can't be wasted.
Very cool story, bro.
Your email - he'll get on it ASAP.
Happy Easter !!
Should have put your wife in the picture with Tressel
It amazes how Ohioans adore this sleazeball but I guess it makes sense, since he delivered them the one major sport championship any team in the Worst State Ever has won since the 70’s. How people laud a man who cheated and lied in order to give himself and his team an advantage over 13 (well 12 if you discount Pedn State) other programs Ohio State faced who played and coached and reported fairly is beyond me. It’s like the family of a bank robber blind to the fact he’s a criminal because he was robbing banks for them. What a great guy. Bizaare.
How is it different from us loving the Fab 5?
The Fab 5 changed the cultural milieu in basketball but also societally.
Tressel just bought a title.
The Fab 5 are relevant today...beyond Ohio Tressel is nothing today ad Clarett is playing rugby.
<I put up a good one but in deference to Mrs Kass I took it back down>
1) Congrats on the award! Nice work.
2) Nope, that's it. See 1
Great story. The most interesting part was...You recruited for Michigan in the 90's...? I am equally impressed/jealous. No way you could share any stories of players you recruited...? And here I just thought you were just a regular fan like me. Recruiting coordinator you worked under is a bigwig down at ND now right? you guys keep in touch? Called him a chicken lately?
There is a larger network of people working indirectly for the program than most fans know.
I may or may not have been working for the program during the 2009-2011 seasons. Those were some interesting years ;)
Yes I did. A good friend of mine was George Lilja who was an All-American under Bo and ended up here in Northern Ohio when his pro career ended. George asked me if wanted to help out (which I obviously did) so we went up to AA with a LOT of ex-players who had settled in or were from this area and met with Chmiel. We all got lists of players to watch but more than anything our job was to "vet" the players character by getting to know his friends and the type of people he hung out with. TRUST ME - attend a high school game and tell a few people that you're there recruiting for Michigan and you'll get a lot of attention fast. We would find out who the players buddies were, sit with them, and then just listen to the conversation during the game. It was amazing how much you could learn about who was a studier, had a job, liked to smoke pot, you name it by just listening to the friends talk. We also watched games obviously but in our capacity as unoffical recruiters we were signficantly limited in the amount of personal contact we could make. When Bob left for ND in 94 that pretty much ended my recruiting career.
No Bob is no longer affiliated with ND or Michigan and is on the speaking/consulting circut now. Ironically he was very good friends with my sister (next door neighbors actually) during his time in Ann Arbor and is one hell of a nice guy and fantastic recruiter. My sister keeps in touch with him or at least she used to but I havent heard anything lately.
It was a lot of fun.
I'm confused why you asked the question you asked. Chances are, OSU will get every Ohio prospect they go after this year with the exception of Ferns and dominate the Ohio top 10.
OSU's perceived in state weakness, IMHO, more a result if not having enough time on the job to assess who they wanted, combined with some ineptitude during Fickell's term.
I vaguely remember you writing that you would be wearing a Michigan tie to the event...
You are right. I had it out and basically pussed out at the last minute and went with the yellow tie cause my Michigan tie didnt go with my black suit.
At least that's the story I'm going with. But truthfully I just pussed out.
And I assumed the suit was dark Navy that I just couldn't make out in an Internet Picture. It wouldn't have hurt to at least have on Michigan colors? Navy Suit, blue buttondown (or white,) with a Maize tie matches perfectly. Just curious how obvious or subtle your Michigan tie appears. We all choose our own Michigan apparel, but there are a lot of Michigan clothes out there I never would wear. And I'm sure there are some doozies out there for ties.
Was chicken on the menu?
