OT: Last Chance U released on Netflix

Submitted by maiznblue on

Last Chance U is a new show released on Netflix on July 29th. Seems like it will be a good watch to get us through until football season starts.

"Last Chance U" follows a group of young men training to become the future stars of the NFL. Based at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), "Last Chance U" takes us on a journey to understand the real men of the gridiron at one of the most successful, but least known athletic programs. Each player has incredible talent and drive to be the best, but each face their own unique struggles both on and off the field. As their season takes an unexpected turn, the methods of this unconventional team are deeply called into question. With much to lose, they are constantly reminded of the stakes.

Here's a link to an article that discusses the documentary:

I'm not sure of the details, but he couldn't get things together to transfer to Kentucky just yet. I'm wondering if his academics fell off once he got in trouble at U of M, so now he has to spend some time recovering academically. That's my speculation.

But he is supposed to transfer to Kentucky once he's finished at EMCC.

Started last night with the first two episodes and was stunned how good it is. The cinematography is brilliant and the lack of narration from anyone other than the particulars gives it a neutral quality instead of an ideology or agenda-driven feel (a frequent complaint I have about ESPN 30-30 productions, for example).

You really feel the desperation of these kids at the same time that you shake your head at their inability to make good choices. As you get to know them, and get to know the adults around them, it becomes less and less surprising how ill – equipped they are for school and for life. The fine line between providing opportunities to athletes vs. raw exploitation of them like so much cattle being moved through the factory farm is fascinating to think about as you see their stories unfold.

It's riveting. Watch it.

Wife and I got hooked on it this morning. It blows me away how uneducated some of these kids are. The show is awesome though.. I've wondered if something will be said when the coach is pushing that lineman several times when they lost.. and the kid told him to not put his hands on him..

Yeah considering I used to get my face mask grabbed and shaken around with tobacco spit flying in my face( in the middle of nowhere Nevada no less). I'm thinking this'll move the needle of those who need to be offended and make everyone else shrug their shoulders.

I have a mini list set up for shows recommended by MGOBLOGers. I've watched two shows already. They came as advertised. I'll add this to my list.

Binge watched this (as well as Stranger Things) this weekend. It is VERY good.

You can't help but root for Ronald Ollie and you're almost personally affected when the kids make bad choices over and over again.

It really shows you how big of factors self-motivation and perserverance are in your success or failure in life.

The internet seems to be ushering in a golden age for TV series...alot better and more creative than what we've been served on broadcast networks.

All I can say is...Wow. Finished watching this last night and I was blown away by the educational aspect of the school. It seemed more like these kids were enrolled in a low level high school than anything resembling higher education.

I will definitely be checking out Auburn this year to see if Franklin ends up starting or not.
