OT: Larry Munson and The Hobnailed Boot

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on
Back in 2001 Georgia beat Tennessee on a last second Touchdown. In itself, pretty cool, but what made the moment, was Larry Munson's call of the play. For those of you who've never heard it before, this brought the term "hob nailed boot" into the lexicon of college football terms. Someone randomly posted this on twitter today, and I thought you guys would enjoy it; those of you who enjoyed Bob Ufer will get a good laugh. http://youtu.be/gPRqaAbdzZ4 "My God Almighty, did you see what he did? David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over!" Munson screamed. "We just dumped it over! 26-24! We just stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!" Edit: Could someone embed the video? I can't do it from my phone.

is on my list of must watch rivalry games.  Back then the teams were on pretty even footing, UGA's won 4 in row through Tennessee's rut the last few years.

That was one of only 2 losses that UT team had that year.  The other was their upset loss to LSU in the SEC title game which sent a top 5 Tennesee team all the way down to the Citrus Bowl where they smacked Michigan around.

Tenn had beaten Florida 2 weeks before the SEC title game, but it was Florida that went to the Orange Bowl in the BCS instead of Tennessee.  If I remember correctly Michigan was the 2nd best team from a very weak Big Ten that year.   Michigan's 3rd trip in four years to the Citrus Bowl.  This was one of the most lopsided matchups in bowl history imo.

"...and some stupid mircale could still happen."

I want someone from an ABC / ESPN crew to say that some day, as well as the remark about spending one's last timeout like "gold bullion". There is definitely some inspiration they could glean from this. That was a pretty cool lead-up and a great call though.

Nope. During early morning hours, land cools off faster than the ocean due to differences in their respective heat capacity. If land cools to a temperature below that of the adjacent water surface temperature, then the pressure over the water will be locally lower than that of the land. This sets up a land breeze which opposes the sea breeze, so long as the surface wind pattern isn't significantly stronger. It sets up a scenario where water remains relatively calm while winds can be gusty aloft.

As a resident of the great state of Georgia, I can tell you that Tennessee was always UGA's biggest bully back in the day.  Georgia was always good but could never quite match up with UT.  That's why it was such a HUGE deal for the Dawgs to beat the Vols that day.  I hate UGA, but I always loved Munson.  I'm also a huge Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan & our play-by-play guy, Gene Deckerhoff was a huge fan on Munson's.  If you listen to the two of them, you can hear a lot of Munson in Deckerhoff's calls.

This is till the best call in college football history.  The sheer euphoria of the moment was tangible.

"We crushed their face!"
