OT - LaMichael James doesn't like rollercoasters

I know many of you read Matt Hinton's blog on a regular basis so you may have already seen this, but I got a pretty good laugh out of it and wanted to share.

Apparently, during Oregon's pre-Rose Bowl trip to Disneyland, LaMichael and a few of his teamates decided to check out Space Mountain. This is what happened:

I would love to see his reaction to riding the Millenium Force or the Dragster at Cedar Point.  The guy isn't afraid of 240 lb linebackers, but apparently a 32 mph roller coaster causes him to change his underpants.

A roller coaster is a little bit bigger than a 240-pound linebacker.  Players are used to being in control.  On a roller coaster, all illusions of control vanish as soon as it starts.  I'm with James on this one.

Not gonna say anything bad about James here.  Rollercoasters and I don't get along too well either.  Mostly they're cool, but the feeling that you're about to be in a plane crash at the beginning is not.

In fairness its not the speed that matters, its the acceleration that gives us that feeling.   To say that it goes 30mph is to downplay the forces experienced by the body due to change in velocity.

Space Mountain tops out at about 2.5g, which it acheives because it is so twisty.  That is by no means a lot in the context of the world's roller coasters, but in terms of what a non-rollercoastering human body typically experiences it is quite a bit.  Compare to say, the space shuttle launch which comes in at 3g.

You can get to 3g in a car.  The outstanding thing about the space shuttle launch being 3g's is the duration of that accelleration.

You are right, it's not the speed that matters, but it is an indirect indicator of how "thrilling" the roller coaster is.  You can only induce so many g's if you are going at a low speed.  Also, the reason a lot of roller coasters induce thrills is because of the height dropped.  Low speed indicates small drops.  The point is that Space Mountain is a sissy roller coaster.
