OT: Lacrosse at Penn State

Submitted by laxalum on

Since it's been awhile since there's been any lacrosse discussion (I know, I know - this is just for those who care), here's some news from Penn State.  The Nitanny Lions just significantly upgraded their program by hiring Jeff Tambroni away from Cornell.  Big news in the lacrosse world.  Story: http://insidelacrosse.com/news/2010/06/17/breaking-news-cornells-jeff-tambroni-be-penn-states-next-head-coach

Penn State has had the same coach for 33 years until he retired this summer.  Many have wondered why their program has even sniffed the big-time, and most pointed to the long-time head coach as the reason.  Meanwhile, Tambroni just led Cornell to two straight final fours - not an easy thing to do at an Ivy League school with tough admissions and no athletic scholarships.

This is a good move for lacrosse, but sucks for Cornell.  There's potential to grow the sport outside of the east coast.

Tambroni is an awesome coach, and we can expect serious improvement from PSU over the next few years.  Clearly, PSU is taking lax quite seriously.  Tambroni had already taken himself out of contention for the Maryland job - clearly, the job of men's lacrosse coach at a Big Ten university is something that is quite potentially more desireable than at Maryland and Cornell - two mainstays of the sport!
