"As reported in detail at Lost Lettermen and the Kansas City Star, 5-year-old Emma Burton of Olathe, Kan., refused to participate in a class coloring assignment when she and her classmates were told to color in a Jayhawk, the mascot of the University of Kansas. The coloring exercise was part of the kindergarten class' celebration of the state of Kansas."

We all can only hope to raise our children so well. Kudos to these parents, I LOVE this story.

My six year old daughter is in kindergarten too, she gathers with her friends who are Michigan fans and they argue with the TSIO fans in their class, who are considerably older due to repeating kindergarten multiple times....

I'm a little saddened that the mom actually caved in to the teacher and compromised.  My response would have involved the words "Go", "fuck", and "yourself" (and not much else).

If the teacher pushes it, go after the teacher for only having one coloring diagram (and one that plays favorites with a specific group).  It's only kindergarten and I'm pretty sure the principal is going to simply kill the entire thing as opposed to wanting it to end up in the papers.

Nah, I don't agree with that.  Teachers have enough of a headache without pushy parents making a scene over a damn coloring assignment.  This isn't exactly racial discrimination.  And I wouldn't want to teach my kid the lesson that any time you don't like what the teacher (or authority figures in general) says to do, you don't have to do it.  I think the mother handled it excellently.

Jebus, man. The kid refuses to do an assignment because she doesn't want to and your response to the teacher is "Go fuck yourself." The teacher could've (should've) just given her the cat to color, but I think most parents would use the situation as a teachable moment (I hope, anyway). Because you know who else had to do things they really didn't feel like doing/see the point of in school - and life? Everyone, ever.

Full disclosure: I'm a teacher who once had to deal with a "my kid can do no wrong" parent. It was awful.

I grew up in Penn State territory and frequently encountered teachers who would trash talk students for wearing the shirts of other schools.  When the student tried to push back they would be threatened with discpline for "talking back to a teacher".  Some teachers were cool and could take it if they dished it out.  Others ran down the student for not wanting to go to Penn State and when they pushed back, threatened detention.  In one case it ended ugly with the student (not me) having to go to the ACLU and get them to pressure the school.

So yes based on that, any teacher who threatens my kid with discpline over a refusal to color in a freaking mascot is getting my foot up their ass in whatever way I can. No one gets to do everything they want to, which includes teachers who answer to the parents whose kids they educate (or in this case assign BS coloring tasks).

A first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Buckeye fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they were too.

Not really knowing what a Buckeye fan was but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like fleshy fireworks.

There is, however, one exception. A girl named Kristen has not gone along with the crowd.

The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. "Because I'm not a Buckeye fan."

Then, asks the teacher, what are you? "Why I'm a proud Michigan Wolverine fan," boasts the little girl.

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red.

She asks Kristen why she is a Wolverine fan. "Well, my mom and dad are Wolverine fans, so I'm a Wolverine fan too."

The teacher is now angry.

"That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?"

After a pause, and a smile, Kristen says... "Then I'd be a Buckeye fan."
