alternate headline: man does job
that has the ability to influence change should be making a big deal of incidents like this.
Essentially, im pointing to college football writers at major media outlets. Start hammering these instances of coaches making unethical decisions. Make a big stink about it until people start noticing.
And I would really enjoy a recruit coming out and saying that he didn't commit to a school because of some situation that happened in the past and that he couldn't trust a coach. Give them some bad PR.
It confounds me how the transgressions of Saban, Miles and Kiffin (and others im sure) continue to get swept under the rug and forgotten.
Those with the ability to influence change are too busy bitching about and scapegoating individuals for the PED era.
Lane Kiffin is a douche. And he doesn't win.
Nothing worse than a douchey loser.
He'll get what's coming to him and the whole country will be there to applaud.
But let's not act like this should take the kid by surprise. It's Lane Kiffin, fergodsakes. Do a Google search, kid, and see what you're getting yourself into. Can't say I feel sorry for kids who commit to schools with shady coaches. Everyone knows it and they choose to accept that.
On the other hand, if the athletes are qualified to attend that university, they (and the adults around them) should be able to understand who they are dealing with in this day and age.
I'm not trying to defend Kiffen at all, but how do people make these decisions?
I'm betting that 10 seconds of searching would present enough material for me to really look at the man who will hold my future in his hands.
for oversigning. In this day and age, google oversigning college football and you get this, yet everyone wants to go to SEC schools.
The fact that it's Kiffin doesn't diminish my sympathy for the kid. He could have committed to USC for reasons that have nothing to do with Kiffin (academics, location, etc). Kiffin also probably sweet-talked and manipulated the kid, and it's hard to blame the victim for that when he's 16 or 17 years old.
You also need to understand that a 17/18 year old kid is a pretty easy manipulation target. There's a reason Kiffin is still a coach at a major program, he obviously knows how to deflect attention from his more shady activities ("Hey kid. You read what online? Well, let me tell you first hand what happened and how the media is distrorting it to make a story"). Not to mention most kids are more recruited by assistant coaches, who may actually be clean guys at USC.
This kid also seemed to committ more to USC than Lane Kiffin. He grew up dreaming of playing for USC, being part of the tradition. Probably figured it didn't matter who the coach was, he just wanted to be there. So if there's anyone that I can feel sorry for it would be a kid who's faith in a school he grew up loving was ruined because he decided to trust what the coaching staff told him rather than what came up after googling his name.
"The Trojans didn't pull his scholarship entirely, but deferred him to the fall. However, since Fitts had already graduated high school, he had nowhere to go and didn't want to wait."
Not defending Kiffin, but your title doesn't quite nail it on the head. Now he has to sit around and do nothing for 6 months. I can think of worse things :P
I don't think there's any need to try and mitigate Kiffin's behavior. The kid worked hard for what he wanted, only to learn Kiffin's word means nothing at all. And I think a guy who doesn't want to sit around doing nothing for six months deserves some respect.
We're all on the same page - Kiffin's behavior here is unacceptable. I just came into this topic thinking that he completely pulled the scholarship from an EE, which would be so much worse than what actually happened.
True - I missed that part. But still, Kiffin promised something (a spot at USC in January 2013) and went back on his word. It's much tougher to compete for playing time if you arrive on campus as a freshman 3 weeks before the season starts.
He pulled the carpet from under the kid's feet once. What makes you think he won't do it again?
Exactly, why would you defer the scholarship if you were sure you were giving it to the player in the fall? The only thing this move is saying is that Kiffin isn't sure he wants the kid after all.
That happens from time to time in recruiting--Michigan has cooled on a few comitted players and encouraged them to explore other options, but to pull the scholarship three days before he's coming to campus is ridiculous, and very Kiffin-like.
Aren't they only allowed 3 EE scolarships each year?
Probably has something to do with that then.
If that's the case, and they are full on the backdated scholarships, there would be no reason at all to think pulling his scolarship as an EE would mean they are going to pull his scholarship come fall.
They can only count 3, there is no limit to how many can enroll early. The rest just count towards the current class. There is no scholarship number problem that would make this ok. Michigan had 6 EE, 3 count towards last years class and the other 3 count towards this years class.
UGA is trying to get 17 EEs in, with 10 of them backdated to 2012.
Also, there is a very good reason to think USC might pull his scholarship altogether. It's the same one they used to pull his EE, they found someone that wanted more.
For a HS student? i can't...
Still a douche
Lane could have told LM3 if USC was where he really wanted to be, that he could have waited until June as well though, right? LM3 pledging to USC is why this happened. So although the kid didn't techinally have his scholarship pulled, it was still has slimeball tendencies. Who is to say he wouldn't completely pull it on signing day if they get in on someone else and need room? He already has jerked with the kid once. I wouldn't trust the situation either.
First thing I thought of when I saw the headline was... so that's how they got room for LM3 to enroll early.
Semantically you are correct.
However, you assume it is a given that after "deferring" the recruit once Kiffin would most certainly honor his word in the fall.
Why would you assume that? Making that assumption would be very unwise, I would say.
Come February, the kid is really screwed if Kiffin screws him over a second time.
Best argument for an early signing period is this situation, and kids enrolling early more and more. A school should be committed to a kid at least some period before he enrolls. This doesn't work if signing day isn't until February.
He was deferred to the fall because USCs APR is pathetically low. They were hoping that a player was going to graduate early and when that player didn't they gambled on postponing Fitts because he was a lifelong USC fan. They were wrong and he decommitted.
There is always lots more to the story.
Sure there's more to the story....none of which makes Kiffin look any better. Still a dick who decided not to be up front about anything.
Call it a blessing in disguise. When the kid gets to USC he will be held to all practice and conditioning regulations, plus will be required to study and complete his academic requirements. He gets six months of no restrictions on how much he works out, plus minimal other responsibilities. If I were him I would lift, run, repeat. When he gets to campus for summer camp he could be the most physically fit of the incoming freshmen.
Still a douche move though.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but practice and conditioning regulations only apply to organized team activities, right? It's not a violation if a college kid wants to work out on his own for 10 hours a day.
You're correct. He can work out the NCAA limit and if he wants to work out a ton more on his own time, there's no way the NCAA can restrict that. But when you've got a practice schedule and an academic schedule, along with eating and sleeping, there won't be a ton of time for more workouts.
Hoke should start doing this. Imagine how fit all of our athletes could be. Hell, we might even be able to save money on the S&C staff since they won't have as many athletes to worry about.
In fact, since working out on their own is so beneficial, do we really need a S&C staff. I am sending this suggestion off to DB tout suite!
Part of the reason any kid enrolls early is so they can get involved with spring ball and have a head start on the competition come fall. It's the halmark of a kid who wants to play so badly they could burst.
USC had agreed to give this kid that opportunity.
Didn't Les Miles actually pull a kid's scholarship after he'd moved in the dorms?
He also pulled a kids scholarship, notified him with a form letter, refused to speak with him about it, and told everyone in a press conference that he quit the team.
still better than les miles
What's the big deal? It's only 70 miles from Redlands to USC so barely over an hour drive depending on traffic on the 5. Not like the kid had already left home yet or anything - probably only still packing up his stuff at this point. And he still has three whole days to figure out what to do with college - plenty of time!
You people are SO critical of everything Kiffin does.
What do you mean, "You people"?
Coming on here with a scarlet hat, especially after the MBB loss, he means you!
Do YOU mean, "you people"
what do YOU mean, "you people"??
EDIT: Upvoted above for speed. Damn you cell phone/technology.
A 70 mile trek on the 5 won't take an hour. Ever. Unless you're traveling at 3:45am.....on a Sunday.
I bet that silly midwestern dude probably thinks the beach is "minutes" from downtown, too.
Actually, there's less traffic at 7am than 3:45am on the 5 in LA on Sunday, and I've done them both.
Everything else about what you've written is 100% correct.
Even that might be pushing it..
/joke about being married...
Did this happen because Leon McQuay selected USC? I know that he's an early enrollee too. Did they hit their cap and need to move someone from EE to fall?
which makes it even more annoying as we were his #2 choice. It is amazing how little attention kids and their parents pay to the ethics of the coaching staff when choosing a school. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though as kids fall for slimy coaches all the time.
Um, am i missing something? How would you know if we were his number two choice?
But there was a lot of talk after he announced that Michigan had really moved up and he had a hard time deciding and surprised a few people, including his father, when he picked USC over us. FWIW.
Poor kid loved USC and Kiffin hosed him .
Send him a Michigan offer!!
Imagine how this kid must feel.. Crap like this makes me sick. Fuck you Lane Kiffin.
EDIT: Just saw that his scholarship wasn't pulled, he was just told that he couldn't enroll early. This is a bit less slimy, but only just.
Nah, you were right the first time. I try not to swear here but FUCK YOU Lane Kiffin.
That les miles incident when the kid was already on campus was horrible. But Les does have a National Championship to explain his tactics. Kiffin on the other hand is jus a dick. I'm just waiting on him to be fired but I think they'll keep him until the sanctions are gone with the scholarship reductions and then go after a big fish coach
Sorry, but winning an NC does not justify what Miles did or what other coaches do when the cupboard, suddenly overfills, and they go back on their word.
That is just plain wrong. Put yourself in the position of the kid who showed up for school, only to be moved out.
why these kids continue to take other campus visits after making a verbal commitment. The verbal commitment is just as non-binding for the coaches, apparently, as it is for the players.
For *some* coaches...not all
AND *some* players also.
The 5 star recruits don't have to worry about things like this happening!
This kid is a 4-star DE ranked 7th in the country... he's not exactly a scrub.
According to Sporting News' ranking of FBS coaches, that is.
In any case that's how you lose a pipeline, whether the scholarship was pulled or the kid was deferred. Then again, it's not like Kiffin is universally loved by HS coaches in the first place. Redwhiteandmaize is right though--Kiffin still pulls in 5* recruits, and a ton of them.
That ranking is laughable in so many ways.
While Kiffin is obviously a jerk, I think kids, parents, and HS coaches need to start really taking notice of this behavior, which is neither new nor limited to Lane. I mean, Tubberville basically pulled a bunch of offers to kids at Cincy, and the local HS coach said he is no longer welcome on campus. Other schools need to adopt this approach, or at least heavily advise their recruits that you are taking a chance with coaches like Kiffin, Saban, Miles, everyone in the SEC-W, etc.
yes, Kiffen knew the only way McQuay would commit would be if he could enroll in January so they gave Fitts' spot to LM3.
I can't imagine this is good for team chemistry.
Another slimy move from Kiffin to pull a kid scholarship and defer him to fall reminds me how Tuberville screwed over Demetrius Monday. While all the hype is surrounded around Kiffin and his actions, this speaks a lot on the AD that they are willing to keep someone of his character in the program. However, if they are willing to let USC ride high with the arrogance of a coach and drive their program into the ground I'm all for it. College football is better off when USC loses their blue chip status.
Back to the topic at hand, I'm glad this kid is looking elsewhere and its only fitting that he go to USC rival schools and takes out his frustrations on the field agains them. The very kids that live to play for their dream school and gets screwed out of that opportunity are the same ones that have statement games against the school they idolized.
...I'd suspect that, in an effort to assist SC (his dream school) with their scholarship reductions, Fitts busted his ass to gradudate HS early so he could be counted as an EE.
Thats a good point. Another point, that's a BULLSHIT avatar man.
"College football is better off when USC loses their blue chip status"
I think I'd tend to disagree with that statement. I think College Football is better off when there is competition from multiple places. When Texas and Oklahoma are in the top tier, when USC and Oregon are top tier, when Michigan and OSU (yes, I said it) are top tier. When all of these teams are competing for national championships and are having seasons where they have 1 or 2 losses each and every year, it puts pressure on everyone else to improve, and takes away a little of the SEC's "superiority complex."
Kiffin's just not a decent guy.
His coaching record the last two years is only one loss worse than Hoke's, so I doubt they'll fire him soon unless he has a repeat of this year's underachievement.
I hope there is a way this kid can sue the school. This is a dirt bag move and I would say the same if hoke did the same thing.
But he's got a hot wife. Her name is Layla Ali. Or something like that.
If she is Layla Ali, could she knock some sense into him?
or they get forced out when the players are no longer useful.
The fact that this was posted already last week and nobody even notices just epitomizes what a Douche Kiffin is.
How could any kid want to play for this guy or trust anything he says? UCLA is just down the road, Stanford and Cal are nice (and are better schools), ASU has better women, and there are tons of other schools with good football schools and academics.
I feel bad for him, but it's the equivalent of me buying a Rolex from some guy on the street and then acting surprised that it is 1) a cheap knock off, or 2) stolen. But then again, I'm an adult and this kid is still a kid, so Kiffin gets and deserves most of the blame.
The only way this is acceptable is if the kid did something stupid (like commit a crime) and USC was holding his scholarship until the fall for him to get back on track.
Kiffin is young and relatable. This is bigtime for high school kids. Look at who most of the best recruiters are, the ones notorious for "outkicking their coverage" in terms of Recruiting - Tosh Lupoi, James Franklin, Kiffin - all young, energetic guys.
SInce Vanderbilt is my second alma mater and I am big Franklin fan, please don't compare him to Kiffin. He is young, talented and a class act. The only thing he has in comon with Kiffin is that he is young and a football coach.
Vanderbilt is not my second alma mater but I am a huge Franklin fan. In no way is his personality like Kiffin outside of the fact that he his young, ambitious, and fiery. He is a class act.
After his ballot stunt, fuck him.
or kiffen is such a prick that people assumed he did it twice in two weeks.
I don't blame the kids whose heads are turned by the idea of playing in El-lay at SC, but parents and coaches really should conduct a little due diligence on whatever coach and program their kids look at joining, and steer them away from jerks who do things like this. Until SC and LSU and their like start losing 5 stars because the schools' reputations have been tarnished, this stuff will continue. And it is just plain wrong.
They may be aware of the risk but just don't think their student would be subject to it. No one wants to think their kid/player would be in the bottom few spots.
the point isn't that you think your kid may get screwed on his scholarship; the point is that you should not want your kid putting his college career in the hands of people who will screw kids when it suits their purposes. Four years is plenty of time to get screwed in other ways. Plus, who wants role models like that for their kids?
Wait! Lane Kiffin did something slimey?
Well I'll be..........
Pay Hayden tolerates this. He is a class act, and i believe (based on nothing other than my perception of Hayden and Kiffens douchbagery) he won't tolerate much more of this bullshit.
I hope that kid goes to UCLA and stuffs those Trojan bastards for 4 years.
boss when he ignores athletic dept principles? If Garrett were still there, then this stuff would go indefinitely.
My theory is Kiffin's trying to create a conflict. USC didn't show up for a team dinner at the bowl, Kiffin dressed like a tool during the game, and now he publicly ditched a recruit for a shiny new McQuay. Total lack of professionalism and Haden looks like a fool.
Why would Kiffin try to create a conflict? The prestige of his current job vastly exceeds his qualifications, and despite having a short career he's already left two jobs in a douchey manner (Raiders, Tennessee). If he screws up a third time I can't imagine anyone will hire him.
All you really need to know about Kiffin is that even his own father couldn't stand to be around him.
Kiffin is a win-at-all-costs coach who doesn't win very much. He has one of the most talented rosters in all of college football--even with the sanctions--and still underachieves. He'll be out next year if things don't improve, IMO.
This move is particularly douchey, and I'm gald the HS coach has responded. I wish more coaches would do that.
But this does beg the question: How does USC keep getting top-tier talent?
Basically, Kiffin sells fame and fortune wrapped in Hollywood glamour at one of the most successful programs in college football history. Not a tough sell, even for a douchebag.
Still, I am sickened by this, and wish it would get more press.
I think negativity toward Kiffin is starting to build. The announcers who did the USC-Ga. Tech bowl game were relatively critical of him for essentially standing up the bowl dinner.
It was really surprising that they reported the story during the game broadcast and were so critical of USC.
Is ridiculously nice. Wow.
I hope I never, ever hear that Hoke has done something like this. If a kid is preparing to attend Michigan and gets his scholarship revoked based on a non-academically-related decision by the program I am going to seriously consider finding a new program to support.
These kinds of things should not happen to kids. Remember how excited you were to graduate HS and go on to college? Imagine doing everything you could academically to go off to school AND play a college sport, only to find out your free ride is swept out from under you! What a horrible thing to have happen. Horrible. Worse yet - it was done because the coaches ended up getting someone they THOUGHT was better! (Who knows if he's really going to be better). Horrible. Again, fuck Lane Kiffin and Les Miles and all those other assholes that do this kind of thing.
Best of luck to the kid and personally I want Kiffin to get all of this talent and get his ass handed to him by UCLA on a regular basis.
I honestly don't see how USC fans could stomach having this guy as their coach. Kiffin represents everything that is wrong with college football. I hope he gets canned not because I dislike USC, but because of acts like this. He's a pathetic excuse for a human being.
That being said, does anyone know if Michigan has formally extended him an offer? I have no idea if he's ever visited or has even spoken with anyone on the coaching staff, but we can always use more D-Linemen, especially as far as our pass rush goes.
Why would anyone want to play for this guy?
'Cause he's a fucking asshole. Oh, wait. That didn't make sense here. Oh well.
Profit with the vitriol! I like this side of you.
It feels good, man. 3 years of cursing pent up inside. I think I swear more in a regular day than I have in my whole existence on this site. No swearing makes profitgoblue one an angry fella! So . . . fuck you!
It will be interesting to see if the PAC does anything. I hope their conference leadership isn't as far gone as the SEC leadership. If a B1G school did that this, I'd expect the conference to make them pay for it. Inf act I keep hoping Meyer tries to oversign just so I can see Delany unleash the hounds.
Although it's not an early enrolee I thought Dantonio pulled a scholarship a few years back after the kid had moved into his dorm.
“He’s wanted to go to USC for as long as he can remember and now he feels betrayed. He did everything he was supposed to do from his end and he was a loyal kid. I think they thought because of that loyalty he’d still want to go there. He said to me ‘What am I supposed to do for the next five months?’ It seems shady. I think it seems shady to everyone.” - from the article
This is what really gets to me - you have a highly recruited kid who grew up a fan of your institution, obviously wanted to go there and play football, did everything you asked of him to get there early so he could compete early, so he's obviously motivated. In kind, you defer his scholarship so he can maybe get it in the fall? This comes after he had his paperwork in and had begun at least shopping for essentials per ESPN. Wow, Lane, wow. If you can't stand by commitments you made to these kids, I would actually shudder to think what message about loyalty and concern for others that sends to people currently in the program, much less anyone else considering it. I would hope that this sort of casual disregard for others is not overlooked by his superiors or the Pac-12.
It doesn't just seem shady, it is shady. Lane Kiffin is a douchey douchebag
how to do things the right way, and who's always had the adults covering for him. It'll catch up to him before long, and maybe in unexpected ways far from the football field. It can't escape the notice of Layla Kiffin how big a douchebag her husband is.
This is just another one of his bad habits!
