Switching a player's number without declaring it is in violation. Therefore, Kiffin played ineligible playersi n the game, and the NCAA could vacate the win, as well as any others in which Kiffin may have done this.

Article says the backup QB switched from sharing a number with the backup kicker to the backup punter. Maybe the backup QB is the field goal / extra point holder and they were planning on having him hold for the backup kicker? I dunno, Kiffin seems like a slimeball but I can't imagine him thinking "oh boy, Colorado... better go deep into the bag of tricks for this one".

Didn't Michigan get penalized a couple of seasons ago when they had two players on the field with the same number? I don't remember the exact situation, but I think it was related to the decimated defensive backfield requiring some unexpected personnel combinations.

If I Recall Correctly
I think it was during the Bowling Green game in 2010 when we had Odoms and Avery out there (although I thought it was #9 for both of them), but I think we were handed 5 yards for illegal participation and something else. Not sure exactly what the full penalty might have been.
