OT - Kerry Coombs (CB/ST Coordinator) to stay at Ohio State, and promoted to co-DC
Earlier today there was some speculations that Kerry Coombs would be following Fickell to UC to be the DC/Associate HC. Implications would have been relatively big from a recruiting standpoint with Ohio State losing 2 of their top-3 recruiters. However, Coombs recently took to twitter to deny these rumors, followed by Urban who hints at Coombs's impending promotion:

Great news! My rt-hand man, Kerry Coombs, is a Buckeye! In add to coordinating the SPT, he will have an expanded coordinating role on our D

HE'S VERY ANGRY ABOUT THE RUMORS THAT WERE GOING AROUND
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Don Brown typed in all caps, bolded, and size 24 font. Don't want to lose the intensity of the message over text.

Maybe they don't teach them about lowercase letters in some parts of ohio.
But I was hoping he would have used comic sans font though.

Other than Zach Smith, Kerry Combs is the weakest part of that staff and has been for years.

categorically untrue.

How so? His defensive backs have been solid and he has done well making recruiting in roads in Michigan with guys like Weber and Webb. I always felt Fickell was the 2nd weakest link considering he failed as interim coach, and the LBs have been a weak spot for OSU a few times recently. But I don't follow them closely enough to actually know much about their position coaches outside of recruiting.

Plus his DBs have been pretty good. Soooooo you're wrong.

Coombs has been a phenomonal recruiter, and positional coach.
Since Coombs has come aboard, Ohio State has strengthened their recruiting ties with the Greater Cincinnati Area high school football powers (Colerain, Middletown, Highlands, LaSalle, Moeller, St. X...). Plus, Coombs helped established a relationship with Cass Tech by recruiting Damon Webb, Joshua Alabi, and Mike Weber.
As a CB coach, Coombs has coached up some solid players: Bradley Roby, Doran Grant, Eli Apple, Gareon Conley, and Marshon Lattimore. Two 1st round picks, a 4th rounder, and two player projected in the top-2 rounds of 2017 NFL Draft.

Conley and Lattimore are aware that they are not allowed to tackle receivers BEFORE the WR catches the ball in the NFL, right?
They might be in for a bit of shock.

Does Coombs get the pay bump or is it just a meaningless title? What's with all this Co, Assistant and Associate stuff OSU is doing?
http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/coaches.html
Greg Schiano-Associate Head Coach
Larry Johnson-Assistant Head Coach
Tony Alford-Assistant Head Coach
So he give his assistants meaningless titles and keeps all the money. Nice little scam Urban.

Meyer has done this for awhile. He knows his staff will always have a ton of turnover so they don't have coaches work with just 1 position group, they at least have a say in all of the offense/defense depending on which side of the ball they are on. Makes it much easier to transition when coaches leave.
December 10th, 2016 at 7:13 PM ^
So Urban makes bank and give his position coaches with position coach salaries more responsibility. Like like I said, nice little scam. That crap doesn't work in the NFL. You have one Head Coach, one DC, one OC and then your position coaches.

You think Tony Alford is really an "Assistant Head Coach" and his pay is significantly more than a RB coach at other major schools?
December 10th, 2016 at 10:43 PM ^
Alabama RB coach makes $475K.
http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2016/06/details_on_big_rais…
The "Assistant Head Coach" (really just a RB coach) Tony Alford makes $400K.
http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2015/12/64856/report-…
So the "Assistant", "Associate", and "Co" Head Coaches don't even make 1/10th of what Urban makes. Nice scam Urban.

I had heard it was the other way around. Urban tacks on these extra titles as a loophole to offer his asst. coaches a higher initial salary. Otherwise, they would have to wait and build up seniority/incremental pay raises.
For example, Stan Drayton was making $295K/year after 3 seasons as a RB coach for Urban, and was replaced by Asst. HC/RB Coach Tony Alford who earned $400K/year from day 1.

Well, he is Kerry Coombs and he loves his unit. There it is from the man's own lips, virtually shouted from the virtual mountaintops so everyone is painfully clear that he loves his unit and his Buckeyes.
