OT - Keith Olbermann returning to ESPN, to host nightly ESPN2 show

Submitted by Butterfield on

Keith Olbermann is returning to ESPN to host a late-night show beginning on Aug. 26.

The new show "Olbermann" will generally air at 11 p.m. ET weeknights on ESPN2 and is expected to be a mix of perspective, commentary, interviews, panel discussions and highlights .

My sports fandom came of age during the "Blue Background" era of Sportscenter, primarily through the words of Olbermann and Dan Patrick.  During that period in the early 90's, I would have probably listed those guys as two of my heroes.  But as time has passed, and Olbermann has ventured into other arenas, I can't say I'm terribly excited about this announcement.  He's become such an outspoken political commentator that I wonder if he'll be able to keep the show focused on sports and leave his politics at home.  I suppose we'll find out if he can keep it neutral.

Whether you're conservative or liberal, I think we can all agree that sports should be separated from politics, so please  no snark towards one party or another in this thread.   Just as Rush Limbaugh's political views had no business on NFL Countdown and Dennis Miller's opinions didn't belon on MNF, I don't want to hear Olbermann's on this new sports show.

My only concern is whether Olbermann will be able to work in a city he once called a "godforsaken place."  I was sorta hoping they had a studio for him in Orlando.

I cannot watch him regardless of his political views.  He obviously thinks he's the smartest guy in the room and wants you to know it.  I think Dan Patrick was good for keeping that in check because he was the smartest guy in the room but left Olberman think he was.

If they are recycling old anchors, I'd rather see Craig Kilbourn make a second lap.

My guess is Olberman came really-really cheap and is a known commodity.  He flamed his old bosses too much for this to be a mutual beneficial arrangement.  Probably got turned down for Al-Jazeera USA, not meaning that in a political sense but that would seem to be the last resort for a talker.

Olbermann's new show.  The only reason I enjoyed him on Sportscenter years ago, was because I was a kid who thought his and Dan Patrick's schtick was fresh.  They benefited from a new sports phenomenon emerging, not because he was really THAT talented.  It was just something different that we hadn't seen on tv before, so it became popular.

I'd rather watch Sharknado in 3D while clipping the toe nails of a naked Rosie O'Donnell as I chew on ricin-laced chopped glass, lying on a bed of Siafu ants in Mark Dantonio's sex dungeon.

Keith has a track record of blowing up everywhere he goes, even at ESPN from what I have heard and they are gonig to bring him back? They must be smokin some fine meth in Bristol.
