OT: Kansas getting killed by VCU

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Down 18, we'll be having the mid-majors filing it out to play the blue bloods winner for the title. Glad all the talking heads said VCU had no business being in the Tournament. Kansas given a gift path, and they can choke that away too.

I know that this isn't a popular opinion, but none of this means that VCU belonged in the Tournament. Teams should be judged strictly on resumé, and just because they've been on an insanely hot streak doesn't mean their regular season performance is any different than it was two weeks ago.

Oh I definitely agree. I love seeing at-large mid-majors more than mediocre BCS teams because, frankly, they're usually better than the Alabama's and Colorado's of the world despite having similar resumés. VCU has been obscenely hot from the field and on defense though, they played a better game against Kansas than they did against almost any other team they've played this year even though it's freaking Kansas out there. Unreal.

To me, it just proves how close the best team and the 68th best team are.

VCU may have been the weakest at-large team in the field, but that doesn't mean they were worse than every single conference champion.  They obviously are much better than all the #15 and #16 seeds, for instance..

The question is how can you know that ahead of time on Selection Sunday?

I do think that extra weighting should be given for how well teams are playing at the end of the season.  Your performance in a December tounament in Maui should not count as much.

Improvement counts.

Kansas lost. I just won my office pool because I'm in the lead and nobody has any teams left in the final four.

I played high school basketball with Shaka Smart in Oregon, WI.  I was a sophomore on varsity and he was the starting senior point guard.  Very solid defender/assist man.  Worked his ass off in the weight room.

I DID dunk on him a few times, though.  Just sayin'.  Anyway, crazy to see him in this position.
